Saturday Morning Language Exchange

Dear Community,

We kindly invite you to join our language exchange group Spanish-English/English-Spanish.

The sessions are aimed at people willing to improve their conversational skills putting them into practice in a realistic environment and with native speakers. They are guided by a bilingual facilitator (a teacher with extensive experience in the field) who proposes the activities and conversation topics.

It involves several people whose native language is English and several people whose native language is Spanish. We get together so that the former can practice Spanish and the latter can practice English.

Apart from the language learning, the sessions bring an excellent opportunity to meet and interrelate with local people while engaging in the city’s cultural activities.

Therefore, this language exchange complements formal language learning. It mainly serves for putting oral language skills into practice. Additionally, it constitutes a good opportunity to experience and gain an insight into aspects of Ecuadorian culture and Cuenca local life.

November 13th, from 11 AM to 12:30 PM, Voluntary contribution from $2, Otorongo Lounge, Plaza del Otorongo y Avenida 3 de Noviembre, Cuenca.

Joes’ Secret Garden this week!

Dine-In … Saturday, Nov. 13th, join the fun our beautiful restaurant.
Take Out … Sunday, Nov. 14th … for pick up or delivery.

Italian style tender beef – Osso Buco! Dinner, slow cooked with fresh vegetables and gravy for hours … then served on creamy parmesan polenta … or opt for our popular Herb Garlic and Rosemary Roasted Chicken or a classic Egg Plant Parmesan Lasagna, finishing dinner with a refreshing fresh Mango Mousse, … that’s what’s cooking at Joes’ this week.

What our customers have to say and posted on Trip Advisor:

“Joe’s Secret Garden is a private home with a beautiful garden in the back yard. They serve dinner for up to 100 people and they’re known for their Southern fried chicken which they serve monthly. Except for special holidays, they usually only serve dinners on Saturday evenings and it’s a warm and gracious place for new people to meet fellow expats, although their clientele isn’t exclusively geared to expats.

Ken and KP, the current owners, prepared Osso Buco for the main course tonight along with a sweet and sour beet, avocado and red onion salad, fresh bread still warm from the oven, mashed potatoes with gravy and a key lime pie for dessert. The Osso Buco was perfectly prepared and everyone at our table commented on the overall quality of the meal. The meat was fall off the bone tender and the gravy was very well seasoned. It was a delicious meal.

I go to Joe’s Secret Garden regularly. It’s not often that I miss a week. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is warm and congenial. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Cuenca or anyone living here that hasn’t tried Joe’s before”

Puppy Workshop — free — today

Thinking about getting a puppy? Let’s get ready. Come to my free workshop today at 2 PM. We’ll talk about choosing the right breed for your family, puppy-proofing the house, the critical importance of his/her first 16 weeks, the equally important business of socializing him/her, whether or not to get a crate, how to use pee pads, and so much more. You can meet other puppy owners and start talking about play-dates.

Bring your questions. It will be my pleasure to teach you what I know and get you off on the right foot. We’ll sit outside in a nice garden and talk. And you can also take a look at some helpful dog products I’ve brought in from the States.

I’m Heather Conley, certified in dog training and dog behavior by the prestigious Karen Pryor Academy. Before retiring to Cuenca in 2019, I owned and operated The Dog House NYC in Manhattan for 25 years. Now I live in El Vergel. Please email me or text me for the address.

Dao Yin / Yoga Classes – a spiritual and physical practice

Start the day with more energy and a positive mindset with a morning practice.

Or calm down and get yourself very relaxed for a good night sleep with our evening practice.

We offer classes that is a mix of Dao Yin and Yoga. Dao Yin is an old Chinese practice where Qi Gong and Tai Chi originates from. It works by releasing tensions and restrictions both in our body and mind – and thereby opening us up to deeper connections and a stronger flow of Qi – Life Force. Every Class will have a different theme, taking you deeper into the practice of Qi Gong – for example about our Inner Three Treasures, Yin & Yang or the Five Elements.

The class is a complement to Qi Gong, and the difference from Qi gong will be more and deeper stretches as well as practices on the floor.

It is a practice with very flowing and easy movements, making it available for most people – you do not need to be an acrobat to join …

Contact us if you have any questions.

Final reminder – honoring all veterans this Thursday, 10:45 AM

Attention all military Veterans, family members and the General Public: The annual Veterans Day ceremony will be held at San Sebastian Plaza on Thursday, November 11th at 10:45 AM. It’s similar to a meet and greet except we will say a prayer or two for World Peace and also in remembrance of the many Veterans who gave their lives for their countries and honor the Veterans now living in Cuenca.

In the past we have had individuals who served not only in the United States of America or Canadian Military but representatives from Great Britain, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and South Africa. Please spread the word. It is a short ceremony where we can say “Thank You” to individuals who have served their countries and remember former military brothers and sisters who gave their lives while serving. I have also invited the Ecuadorian Military to send representatives and I hope that they will. Maybe the people at other publications or any of the Spanish Newspapers or Magazines can send a representative to cover the event. We will have a Spanish/English translator present.

This event is open to All. If by chance you have a flag of the country you served, please bring it. We were not able to put this event on during the Covid pandemic and it takes place outside on the plaza. Please mark your calendar. Thursday, November 11th at 10:45 AM. Thank you in advance for spreading the word and your participation.

November 11th, form 10:45 AM to 11:30 AM, Free, San Sebastian Plaza, Cuenca.

November 13th, from 11 AM to 12:30 PM, Voluntary contribution from $2, Plaza Otorongo and Avenida 3 de noviembre, Cuenca.

Garden Sessions: Esteban Encalada Quartet at idiomART, Nov. 14

We’re really excited for this month’s Garden Sessions concert. The Esteban Encalada Quartet is a highly talented group of Cuencano jazz musicians who will take you on a journey through the different eras of jazz, including Latin jazz, as they explore musical sounds and sensations.

The Garden Sessions have been a huge success and we have been selling out very quickly. Although this is exciting, it means that many people are left out and we don’t want that! Last month we had a trial run with a morning show and we are replicating that this month. Once we fill up the afternoon show, the band will perform a morning show as well as long as there is a minimum of 20 reservations.

Painting tour

Orchids painting tour

Hundreds of orchid species are waiting for us in our next painting tour! On Saturday, November 20, 2021, we will celebrate our fourth painting tour to the Ecuagenara orchid farm. We will learn about the interesting process of “deflasking,” the result of which, after a couple years and replete or two, is an orchid flask, a bottle with dozens of baby orchids growing inside. Orchids are fascinating and very inspiring for everyone.

You don’t need any painting experience! Just your desire to create and art work.

Tour includes:
9 AM
Departing from Plaza del Otorongo, round trip transportation to Ecuagenera orchid farm in Gualaceo, 45 minutes from Cuenca City Center.

La Guarida. Dinner on Fridays and Saturdays

A couple of years back, La Guarida was serving really delicious fast food. Little by little, we have updated our menu to include things that we simply couldn’t get anywhere else, such as, our juicy and delicious lamb burger or our new special – a beautiful, aromatic, Asian-inspired broth with shrimp and pork meatballs. We are so proud of our key lime pie and the apple pie is to die for.

We try to understand this changing world and are continuously searching for sustainable and delicious products. We don’t forget about our plant-based and fungi friends and we simply believe that you must try our creamy pear barley with sautéed mushrooms -to us that dish spells vegan dreams. Our Avocado Rainbow is humble, colorful and full of flavors. Our vegan chocolate mousse is the Queen of our desserts.

Come check out, what La Guarida is all about. A patron once called us – the best hidden jewel in Cuenca. We surely are ready to shine for all of you. Come on over.

We now open Friday and Saturday for dinner. Reservations are advised (bigger menu) but not required.

We are located at Mariscal Lamar and Luis Pauta. Take the Tranvia and get off La Cuadra station.

A few spaces still open for CCC Spanish Classes at idiomART

Have you been wanting to learn Spanish but just haven’t gotten around to it, or you’ve been overwhelmed by it, or you just straight up didn’t like the classes you’ve already taken? Well, look no further. CCC Spanish at idiomART is different! We take the class out of the classroom and believe in the three C’s of learning a language: Conversation ~ Culture ~ Context.

CCC Spanish’s teaching method focuses mainly on conversation combined with grammar, cultural activities, field trips, and topics related to day-to-day life. Our teachers are local Cuencanos who have decades of experience and have been fine-tuning this dynamic methodology for years. Class is in a relaxed environment where we invite you to make yourself at home, enjoy a hot drink, and start learning Spanish! Classes will be held either in the garden or on the outdoor patio at idiomART.
