SciFi discussion group meets Thursday

  • Date: this coming Thursday, February 2nd
  • Time: noon
  • Place: Golden Prague Pub

The book for this month is:

  • The Player of Games, by Ian M Banks

This is the second book in Ian Banks’ Culture series, which are all standalone stories set in a far future of humanity known as The Culture, a utopian, post-scarcity space society of humans, humanoid aliens, and advanced super intelligent artificial intelligences living in artificial habitats spread across the Milky Way galaxy. The stories center themes of how do you find meaning in a life when all of your needs are already met (an apt question for some retirees), how do you reconcile military action with the idea of an enlightened society, how to resolve fundamental clashes of values between extremely different cultures, and other such questions.
<!– wp:more –>
<!–more–>
<!– /wp:more –>
For anyone who hasn’t been to the Golden Prague Pub, you can find it under that name in Google Maps. It’s directly across the street from the Supermaxi El Vergel, 2 blocks south of Parque de la Madre on Alfonso Cordero. The place opens at noon — if you get there early, I’m not sure what their policy is on letting you grab a chair, but the Supermaxi has a couple of benches outside on the upper level.

Anyone who finds themselves available and wants to show up is welcome. (It’s not required to have read the monthly book first, but be warned that its discussion will likely involve spoilers.) This is intended to be a general geek-interest reading/discussion group. Subjects could involve scifi/fantasy fiction and movies, anime, tech, gaming, a book-of-the-month reading, and so forth. Friendly arguments, such as about whether The Death of the Author can ever be applied to the works of an unpleasant author who hasn’t had the good grace to actually die yet, or whether it’s worth watching Season 1 of a new show when Netflix has already announced that there will never be a Season 2 that resolves the story arcs.

If you have any questions, feel free to post them below and I’ll keep an eye on this space to answer them.

See you all then!

Taizé Prayer, St. Christopher Episcopal Mission

Taizé Prayer – Sunday, January 28, 2023
4 to 5 PM

St. Christopher Episcopal Mission
Address: Bartolomé de las Casas #5-34 y Tirso de Molina

Google Map https://goo.gl/maps/YoGRCn4AaH12QWvL6

Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/StChristopherCuenca/

What is Taizé Prayer?

Repetitive Sung Prayer
The characteristic of Taizé worship that is most familiar is the use of a kind of repetitive prayer set to simple musical lines. Repetition is not a new phenomenon nor unique to Taizé. What is unique to the prayer of Taizé is the adaptation of the repetitive form to simple musical lines and core biblical texts that can be sung by a whole assembly of various nationalities, languages, and denominations.

Silence
Another characteristic of Taizé worship that has been a welcome gift to Episcopal worship is its generous use of silence. Like repetition, the use of silence in worship has a rich history that many modern Christians no longer experience. It is not necessary to fill every moment with words or music, and it can be meaningful to have time to pray silently in the presence of others, or simply to sit in the presence of God.

St. Christopher Episcopal Mission is a Cuenca-based Christian faith community formed in 2019, as the first English-language Episcopal congregation in South America.

All are welcome at St. Christopher’s regardless of their faith tradition.

Introducing Gypsy TV, free for two weeks

A new service that cuts through thousands of TV shows and movies out there to bring you just the very best. And, Gypsy TV will even add shows if something is missing that subscribers want. What could be better?

Free Hands-on Class. Save the date. Wednesday, February 8 at 4:30 PM
All attendees get two weeks of free programming.

If you’re like most expats, you may struggle a little with new technology—like
apps and streaming services. No problem. We invite you to a free class on how to install Gypsy TV. All you need to bring is your laptop (fully charged). Learn why Gypsy TV may be the only streaming service you’ll ever need. The class, led by Gypsy TV founder, Jason, will last half an hour with time for a Q&A.

You will leave the class with Gypsy TV fully installed (even if you have tried before and were unsuccessful), instructions on how to download it onto your TV, and a tech person to call if you have questions when home. You can even (for $20) have a representative come to your home and install for you on your TV. We want to eliminate any and all the hassles of installing Gypsy TV, so you can begin enjoying this new service free for two weeks as soon as possible.

Uzhupud Garden the new gem of Ecuagenera

On my school trip back in 1988 I visited, for the first time, Huertos Uzhupud, and it was a waooo on my head. Not sure if it was because this old farm house was magic or because I was only 12.

60 min drive from Cuenca on the way to Paute is Huertos Uzhupud, an old hacienda with more than 250 years of history that became one of the most fantastic places to spend the weekend with family and friends, for all the Cuencanos.

Years back, it was sold to Jorge Portilla, founder and owner of the most beautiful Orquideareo in Azuay, called Ecuagenera.

Sr Portilla, his family and his team have been working hard to re-open to the public this gem now called, Uzhupud Garden

So let’s make a trip to visit this gem and lets all say wooaaooooo!

A day of relaxing between flowers and friends.

Hiking in Cajas

Hiking is a non-competitive sporting activity that consists of walking along a specific itinerary. It is usually done on trails marked by the competent organism of each country, but also on trails, rural roads and greenways without homologation. Hiking seeks to bring people closer to the natural environment and to the knowledge of the area through heritage and traditional ethnographic and cultural elements, using especially dirt trails.

If you want to come hiking at Cajas I could guide you the route 1, enjoying the hike and its traditional local flora and fauna. Includes fresh fruits and light break.

A Valentine’s Day to remember Farm-to-Table Dinner and Music

Gran Roca invites you to attend our special “Valentine’s Day to Remember Farm-to-Table Dinner and Music.” The dinner will include a wide variety of fresh, healthy and delicious dishes made from ingredients grown and raised on our sustainable permaculture farm to please a wide variety of tastes and diets. All of our dishes are gluten free and produced in our commercial kitchen that is also gluten free. We cook using a minimum amount of oil (and only extra virgin olive oil). We are also careful with our use of sugar and salt.

As we are known for our unique offerings, our menu for Valentine’s Day will feature each of our pasture raised animals, (chicken, turkey, beef, pork and even duck) each mixed with its own special recipe using our farm fresh herbs and vegetables. We will, as in our past events, prepare a variety of delicious vegetarian dishes made using our farm-to-table herbs and vegetables. The dinner would not be complete without our fresh made desserts. No one ever goes home hungry from a Gran Roca event!

But that’s not all. As a part of the evening, we are putting together a live music program featuring songs of love from some of our favorite Broadway Musicals. You don’t want to miss it. There may not be a dry eye in the audience.

For reservations, please send an email to info@granroca.net with your name, number of seats and your preferred seating time. This will truly be a Valentine’s Day to Remember. See you there!

Tai Chi in Parque de la Madre

Tai Chi is a great way to gently improve your fitness and health. It is excellent for developing lower body strength and flexibility and for improving your balance. Tai Chi is a more than 300-year-old practice that incorporates conscious breathing techniques into deliberate, meditative movements which benefit both mind and body.

Our regular, ongoing Tai Chi practice incorporates warm-up exercises, Qi Gong routines, and the fundamental movements of the 18 Form. We welcome all ages and all levels from absolute novice to intermediate. You can join at any time and at any level; there is no class start date or end date.

We practice Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 AM – 10:45 AM in the northeast corner of Parque de la Madre under the shade of the large trees (closest to Av 12 de Abril and the Tomebamba River). If it is actively raining or the ground is too wet, we will meet under the rings of the planetarium. Practice is led by Wayne and Sandra Materi in English though we are always happy to accommodate our Spanish-speaking friends. Classes are free, but we welcome drop-in donations of $2.

BBQ Friday at Pájaro y Bestia

Menu for today:

Entrees:
* Pork Spareribs – Cooked from beginning to end on a wood fired smoker. Sauce on the side because we have nothing to hide. Real deal BBQ.
* Smoked, then braised beef ribs – rubbed with a coffee rub, smoked, then braised in a stout beer and umami braising liquid.
* Chicken wings and ribs combo plate – special priced to introduce chicken wings. 2 ribs and 6 wing sections on a combo plate.

Sandwiches:
* High on the Hog – traditional pulled pork complete with a dollop of coleslaw on top. Face it, a pulled pork sandwich is not complete without the slaw.
* Fried Onion Hamburger – Invented in El Reno, Oklahoma many, many years ago (confirmed origin by the NY Times). Deliberately different than our competition.

Side dishes:
* Mac & Cheese – 4 cheese blend. Makes my belly warm thinking about it. Get some!
* White potato salad – so good you will want to kiss the cook (but please don’t).
* Cowboy beans – breaking out the coffee pot and whiskey bottle again just to flavor the beans. This week because a business neighbor requested an encore…
* Coleslaw – Your momma would be so-o-o-o proud of you for eating fresh vegetables

Desert:
* Goldi’s Cookies – unbelievably good
* Sticky rice – Glutinous (sticky) rice, with not one, but two coconut sauces, and fresh mango heaped on top.

Additional new tables and additional new employees this week. Expect a couple of unannounced surprises on the menu if these people are only half as good as I expect them to be.

This week, we will have a dedicated staff member available to help walk you through the voting process for the Best of Cuenca on GringoPost. As soon as you wrap your lips around our food, you will agree this is Real Deal BBQ. Let me repeat that – Real Deal BBQ.

TGIF with Pawsome News for the Dogs of Cuenca!

We waited till Friday to share this exciting news for animal welfare in Cuenca!

Our vision at FAAN (Fundacion Familiar Amor Animal) is a city where all animals including those of pet owners, community dogs and street dogs are respected and cared for by the collective community.

We are now working in a grassroots community effort to buy permanent land for the shelter because our temporary lease is expiring and we need to urgently move our dogs as soon as possible.

A generous and anonymous donor wants to inspire animal lovers in Ecuador and around the world to help us achieve this vision and focus both on a sustainable shelter for our most vulnerable dogs including senior and unadoptable dogs, side by side with community-based prevention and education strategies.

Our donor has provided a challenge grant in which your donation dollar for dollar will be matched through March 15, 2023!

Will you be a match for the dogs?

January 17-March 15, $10-$10,000,

Tarqui Shelter
