Award winning “Southern Fried Chicken” from Joes’ SG

Joes’ Secret Garden …

Thank you GringoPost readers for voting Joes’ SG Chicken the best in Cuenca for the 8th straight year. We are happy to be serving it again this Saturday and Sunday.

Crisp fried chicken, biscuits and gravy. That’s down home …

Crisp, crunchy, craggly and subtly spicy golden chicken served with creamy coleslaw, buttery garlic mashed potatoes, milk gravy, light country biscuits ending with a ‘warm, chocolate puddin’ cake* makes for real good eating. Mixed with the comfort and friendly atmosphere of our home. It’s a real treat.

A special day for horseback riding with San Joaquin Riding

Let’s go and have an awesome day out with horse trainer Christian this weekend.

For this weekend only, he is inviting riders of all levels (maximum of 5 each ride) on a new schedule through the everglades and hills of San Joaquin, along the Tomebamba river and up the mountain where you’ll get to see a fabulous view of the city of Cuenca.

Saturday will be reserved for all levels on a two and a half hour trail, and Sunday will be for those with more experience who want to ride at their own pace. (This is a three hour trail that takes you to the top to the “Treehouse “, a unique initiative built by a local businessman.)

Arte-Sano Pop Up and Paint

There’s nothing quite like taking your inspiration from nature directly. En plein air, a French phrase meaning “in the open air,” describes the process of painting a landscape outdoors. The majestic vista from Casa Micuna is the perfect inspiration for creating a lovely Ecuadorian landscape.

Whether you are new to painting or a seasoned painter, Amelia will guide you in your approach to plein air—how to see a scene, how to simplify, and how to capture it in paint, but most importantly, to enjoy the process in a fun, relaxed atmosphere.

Saturday Morning Language Exchange

We kindly invite you to join our language exchange group Spanish-English/English-Spanish.

The sessions are aimed at people willing to improve their conversational skills putting them into practice in a realistic environment and with native speakers. They are guided by a bilingual facilitator (a teacher with extensive experience in the field) who proposes the activities and conversation topics.

It involves several people whose native language is English and several people whose native language is Spanish. We get together so that the former can practice Spanish and the later can practice English.
Apart from the language learning, the sessions bring an excellent opportunity to meet and interrelate with local people while engaging in the city’s cultural activities.

Therefore, this language exchange complements formal language learning. It mainly serves for putting oral language skills into practice. Additionally, it constitutes a good opportunity to experience and gain an insight into aspects of Ecuadorian culture and Cuenca local life.

December 4th, from 11 AM to 12:30 PM, Voluntary contribution from $2, Otorongo Lounge, Plaza del Otorongo y Avenida 3 de Noviembre, Cuenca.

Beethoven, Britten and Elizondo in the new concert of the Symphony Cuenca Orchestra

Cuenca, November 25, 2021.- Coriolan, the imposing Overture of Ludwig van Beethoven will open this new appointment that you have with symphonic music, then the notes of the simple symphony of Benjamin Britten that indicate both humor and a certain neoclassical inclination and to close the concert the Latin American dances of the multifaceted Mexican composer, José Elizondo inspired by the striking rhythms of Argentina, Brazil and Mexico, will make us evoke great composers such as Gardel, Piazzola, Jobim, Villa-Lobos and Mexican music that celebrates vitality and the joy. With this repertoire the Symphony Orchestra of Cuenca (CSO), under the baton of Master Augusto Carrión Rodas, director of the new concert of the second season 2021.

Ludwig van Beethoven was a composer, orchestra director, pianist and German piano teacher. The musical legacy of it covers, chronologically, from classicism to the beginnings of romanticism.

Benjamin Britten, Baron Britten, was a composer, director of orchestra and British pianist. He was the first musician to receive a nobility.

José Elizondo is a multifaceted Mexican composer, in the field of technology, he is currently working on artificial intelligence technology projects, applied linguistics and speech recognition. As an author, he has written articles about history, linguistics and technology design. And as a composer, José writes camera music and orchestra.

Free Language Exchange by YEES

A fun and relaxing environment to use your Spanish and English. Come and join us at Selina’s terrace (Calle Larga 7-93) every Saturday for a chance to practice with native English and Spanish speakers and meet new friends. This Exchange is basically a casual conversation where we switch languages every 30 minutes. This event is free; however, due to the pandemic, don’t forget to follow these directions:

– If the receptionist ask what you want, tell him/her that you’re a member of #YEES and there’s a language exchange at the terrace that you’re attending.
– Even though Selina’s terrace is an open space and they have all the biosecurity measures, the pandemic isn’t over yet so don’t forget to keep social distance.
– The conversation will be spontaneous as usual. The only rule is switching languages every 30 minutes. You decide which language goes first.

November 27th, from 2 to 4 PM, Free event, Calle Larga 7-93, Cuenca.

Volleyball recharge!

Please reserve/commit to comments or email message by Saturday morning if you are able to play volleyball on Sunday, Nov. 28 from noon to 2 PM. We need at least 8 players to confirm or the game will be cancelled. We will notify everyone by Saturday at 7 PM to say if the game is on at Parque Vergel.

We invite you to join us!

Due to rainy weather and COVID concerns, Sunday 6 on 6 Volleyball needs new faces, ideas, and energy.

1. We are changing back to the original time of noon to 2 PM on Sundays to try to avoid the rain.
2. New players are welcomed and needed to strengthen our numbers. Come join us for exercise, fun, friendship. We are a friendly group of men and women from around the world. Please come watch or join in the play.
3. Help Needed – Volunteer or several volunteers are needed to be responsible for bringing the volleyball equipment to the park each week. Other players will help set the net up and take it down. It packs in a bag about 40 inches (1 meter) and weighs about 23 pounds (10.5 kilos). It easily fits in a taxi if needed. If interested in helping, go this Sunday and volunteer.
You can also join us on our Facebook page (Cuenca “Bump-Set- Spike” volleyball)
