Art Opening Tonight at idiomART!

Join artists Jane Hiltbrand and Emily Handley for the opening of their exhibitions. This exhibit is a celebration of the culture, nature, and architecture of our beloved Ecuador.

Photographer Jane Hiltbrand’s exhibition, “Haciendas in Ecuador”, shows her continuing love of the architecture, history, people, and color of Ecuador. In this show, Jane tells a visual story of the romance of Ecuadorian Haciendas, along with some of the realities.

Artist in Residence Emily Handley shares a new collection of watercolor paintings in “Flora Urbano”. The exhibit explores the relationship between plants and building ornament, diving deep into the small details that decorate Cuenca and envisioning architecture based on native plants. Her work brings to life the hidden stories written on the facades of historic buildings.

Special musical guest, Luis Ullauri.

Artists Jane and Emily will be there for you to meet, ask questions, learn about their artistic process and just chat. Hope to see you there!

Double Ds: There’s still time to order, but not much

To spice up this holiday season, we’re making our TexMex. It’s a zesty way to lighten up from the heavy flavors and textures of Thanksgiving before heading into Hanukkah and Christmas. A beefy, beany, corny combination with our homemade Rotel and cheese is this menu’s casserole. To pair with it or to eat on its own is a salad of crunchy vegetables (cucumber, radish, celery, carrot, black beans, sweet corn, red onion) dressed with a zesty blend of spices, citrus, and olive oil. Finally, the sweet is one that many of you have told us is the best you’ve ever had. This version will be heavy on the cinnamon.

Texas Tamale Pie: $25 (6-8 servings); $19 (4-5 servings)
TexMex Chopped Salad: $8/lb (2-3 servings)
Arroz con Leche (Rice Pudding): $8/lb (2-3 servings)

Upcoming screen of “An Unknown Country”

As part of the many activities of the Bienal in Cuenca, there will be a screening of the documentary “An Unknown Country” by Eva Zelig, which tells the story of the Jews who came from Europe to Ecuador during the time of the Holocaust. It’s a fascinating piece of Jewish and Ecuadorian history. This documentary was available for viewing on PBS some years ago but I don’t believe it’s available on any streaming service now.

Here’s a link to an interview with Eva Zelig from 2016: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0uNXksVF3LU

The film will be presented as part of a double feature on Tuesday, December 12 beginning at 6 PM at Teatro Sucré in el Centro. The original documentary is in English. I don’t know if there will be Spanish subtitles.

Art Opening this Wednesday – Jane Hiltbrand and Emily Handley

Our final art exhibition of the year is an enchanting celebration of Ecuador’s culture and architecture.

Photographer, Jane Hiltbrand’s exhibition, “Haciendas in Ecuador”, shows her continuing love of the architecture, history, people, and color of Ecuador. In this show, Jane tells a visual story of the romance of Ecuadorian Haciendas, along with some of the realities. Her exhibition will be in the M.C. Escher Salón.

Artist in Residence, Emily Handley shares a new collection of watercolor paintings in “Flora Urbano”. The exhibit explores the relationship between plants and building ornament, diving deep into the small details that decorate Cuenca and envisioning architecture based on native plants. Her work brings to life the hidden stories written on the facades of historic buildings. Her exhibition is in the Gershwin Gallery Hall.

Hi, my name is Freezer

Did you know that it costs a lot to keep a pup like me happy and healthy in the FAAN shelter? From my favorite flea medicine to the yummiest food and all the medical care that keeps my tail wagging, it adds up. Your generous donation can make a world of difference in giving us shelter dogs the love and care we need while we wait for our forever homes. Every dollar helps us bark a little louder with joy and wags—thank you for considering a donation to support pups like me!”

So the FAAN (Fundacion Familia Amor Animal) Team created “Amigo Secreto” so that when you donate food, supplies or financial support this holiday season, one of us will become your Secret Friend at the shelter and send you our very special Christmas Card. You will also be entered into a FAAN New Year’s Gift Rally and you can even meet us at the shelter in January.

From me (and my fellow four-legged FAAN buddies), thank you for thinking of and looking out for us. Maybe one day, we’ll all be home for Christmas.

My name is Freezer and I’m looking for a secret friend and forever home.

The Monday Language Exchange moving to its new home

Unfortunately, our intercambio’s host, Café Veinteunica, closed its doors after accommodating us for some time. We wish them luck in finding their new location.

Our new meeting place, Lirondo Brasserie Restaurante, is equally comfortable and offers an array of drink and food items.

Fortunately, the language exchange gods smiled upon us and we are relocating this Monday without missing a beat.

At that time, please join a congenial group of people in conversing in Spanish and English. All levels of ability are welcome.

The intercambio is free, but please consider purchasing a beverage or a food item to help support the restaurant in return for the gracious donation of their charming space.

No need to confirm your attendance; just show up and enjoy.

Double Ds menu for the week of December 4

Come to Gran Feria Sabatino’s on Saturday to pick up some treats for the weekend and to place your order our next menu. We always love cooking and baking for you.

To spice up this holiday season, we’re making our TexMex. It’s a zesty way to lighten up from the heavy flavors and textures of Thanksgiving before heading into Hanukkah and Christmas. A beefy, beany, corny combination with our homemade Ro-tel and cheese is this menu’s casserole.

Orders are due by 3 PM on Tuesday, December 5. When ordering, please include the following information.
