When are you being vaccinated, and where?

The reason I ask is because I’ll be offering translation assistance to the Ministry of Health and I want to gauge what days and where the assistance is most needed. Judging by the reaction of the staff set up at the Coliseum, I’m going to go out on a limb and assume that’s where there’s a large concentration of expats, but I want to make triple sure that I’m volunteering at the right site.

How to get money into a JEP savings account

Has anyone been successful wiring money from a US bank into a JEP account? Please describe your experience. Has JEP changed its policy and has started to accept US checks for deposit? Based upon my last inquiry, I think the answer is still “no.” Except for depositing cash, are there any other quick and easy methods to get money into a JEP account?

Expat Services Center– get help with your COVID-19 vaccine appointment

Do you still need help registering for your vaccine on the Ministry of Health’s website? Are you starting to wonder why all your friends have received a notification for their vaccine appointment and you are still waiting? Or maybe you received a robocall in Spanish, had trouble understanding what it was all about, and now are worried it was related to your vaccine appointment?

Let Hogar de Esperanza’s Expat Services Center help you find answers to your vaccine-related questions, and breathe a bit easier knowing that you are all set. While we don’t promise to have all the answers, we can share with you the information on what we do know, we can call 171 on your behalf, and just generally do our best to help you sort things out – all free of charge.

An update that we want to share with you is that IESS announced it is signing up its eligible members for their vaccines. However, it seems that not everyone they sign up is being notified of their appointment time. If you are a member of IESS, you can log into your online account and check there to see if you have an appointment scheduled. Or contact us if you need help checking.

The Expat Services Center is offering to assist anyone – at no charge – with registering for and confirming their vaccine appointments here in Cuenca. Send us an email, call us, or just stop by during our open hours. We are happy to help you get vaccinated, as this, in turn, helps our Cuenca community as a whole.

Open hours for the Expat Services Center are: Monday – Friday from 8 AM – 5:30 PM, and Saturday from 8 AM – 1 PM (except during the lockdown). The Center is located at Mariscal Sucre 12-84 y Juan Montalvo, just around the corner from our Esperanza Thrift Shop. Look for the bright yellow sign. Thank you for your support.

What do you do to maintain optimal health?

In yet another one-way communication of an opinion piece published elsewhere on May 2 that this time wisely prohibited comments, once again I feel compelled to take a positive perspective and begin a productive discussion about what the world has been dealing with for too long. The rage the author had was aimed at those who are anti-vaxxers and anti-science, taking the safe and simplistic stance that if only every person receives the vaccine, we wouldn’t have lost so much. I believe rage toward those few is unproductive. No matter what the political bent of the US mainstream media, it appears nobody wants to discuss the elephant: sustaining an unhealthy lifestyle compromises the immune system, making one a perfect host for a virus. Chronic illness left unmanaged becomes acute illness in a pandemic, which results in a great burden on one’s family, community and the healthcare system.

Lost cellphone

My husband lost his Motorola smartphone yesterday (Monday) morning. He’s quite sure it fell out of his pocket as he was exiting the cab we took after grocery shopping. We don’t know the name/number of the driver/taxi, but we were picked up at Supermaxi el Vergel and dropped at Edf. Santa Maria on Agustin Cueva. The driver looked to be in his 20s, maybe early 30s. The Covid partition in his cab was a solid black material, not plastic or plexiglass as many are. My husband’s phone has a brownish-black cover and has phone numbers taped to the back of it, inside the cover. If you found this phone or if you’re the driver, please contact us.

This year’s best foreign film

La Guarida is happy to present on the big screen,

Druk (Another Round)
a film directed by Thomas Vinterberg
in Danish with English and Spanish Subtitles.

Tuesday, May 4th at 5:15 PM.
Doors open at 4:15 PM
Dinner reservations necessary
Limited Capacity.
Tel. 099 806 8071

“Another Round” (from Denmark) is this year’s Best Foreign Film. Thomas Vinterberg’s latest masterpiece is a sweet, strangely modest tragicomedy about the pleasures of (mostly banal) excess. While its protagonists zig-zag their way in a drunken stupor, this brilliant Danish comedy-drama manages to navigate itself between joyfulness and somberness without so much as a stumble. Mads Mikkelsen is a revelation on this role.

Come watch this incredible film and dine in one of the best restaurants in Cuenca. We love cooking healthy and remember that our menu offers a wonderful array of seafood, chicken, beef amongst other vegan and vegetarian dishes.

“Judas and the Black Messiah” tells the story of Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and his fateful betrayal by FBI informant William O’Neal. An incredible and necessary tale. This year, Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for his role on this film. Don’t miss out.

“Life is not the one that one lived, but the way in which one remembers, and how one remembers, in order to tell it”

(“La vida no es la que uno vivió sino la que recuerda, y como la recuerda para contarla.”)

~ Gabriel Garcias Marquez
EscritorColombiano,
Premio Nobel en Literatura

About the artist…

Lorena Duca was born in California almost 3/4 of a century ago, and was greatly influenced by the cultural revolution of her generation in the ’60s and ’70s.

She took her first of many trips out of the country at 19-years old, visiting most of Europe. After returning home to study Anthropology and Spanish language and Literature at San Francisco State in the late sixties (while being a hippie), she left for Latin America in 1968 and worked 2 years in Mexico City as a translator for a Mexican writer/investigator/poet. It was with Señor Magaloni and his investigating colleagues of all things Pre-Columbian, that Loren was encouraged to travel to the great Mayan and Incan cities (“ruins”) of the Americas.

Some of her early adventures include sneaking in and spending the night on the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan, Mexico, and later, walking for 5 days on the Inca trail to Macchu Picchu with her husband and 2 others, without seeing another soul (only a curious Condor!) She explored rivers and jungles and Andean peaks in Colombia and Ecuador off and on for 40-50 years, but it was the friendly people and music that brought her back to retire in Cuenca, Ecuador 6+ years ago.

After 11 years between Colombia and the US, she and her family finally settled down to live in the beautiful small town of Ashland, Oregon, working as a Bilingual Educator and program coordinator for 35+ years and raising her family there. Every summer she and her family would travel somewhere, through Mexico, Central and So. America, and later to China, Middle East, Africa. She was a summer missionary for 6 trips, always carrying a sketchbook and small high-quality watercolors in her backpack. She filled many travel journals of what she saw, people and cultures she observed, and lives imagined or idealized.

Her colorful themes are a reflection and collection of people and places she has met, and from there she paints her memories – past, present and future.

Income tax services

From the desk of tax accountant: The income tax filing deadline is May 17. This means taxpayers have chance to e-file tax returns until then without filing the extension form 4868. To request a tax extension, all you need to do is to submit Form 4868 by May 17. It also provides taxpayers an opportunity to claim 2020 stimulus payments, if not received, simply by filing 1040 for refund.

Jesse is a sweet dog. He is a giant Labradoodle. He has a chronic sore nose due to Lupus. So, the groomer must treat his face gently and avoid his nose if possible. His hair is long and matted. If a groomer has a large enough tub and wants to take him as a client. I would be so grateful.

How the vaccination process is progressing in Ecuador, by Bluebox

“Bluebox the expat one choice for all their insurances needs”

The vaccination process in Ecuador has not been easy, due to the limitations in the negotiations of the current government with the big producers of vaccines against covid 19; a government that is in the last days of its term of office. One of the most significant proposals of the new president, Guillermo Lasso has been the promise to vaccinate 9 million Ecuadorians in the first 100 days of government; a feasible goal, if we consider the number of health centers nationwide, but what about the number of vaccines available in Ecuador? This number of vaccines is increasing since Lasso was appointed as the new president. Ecuador has received significant donations of vaccines from other countries, which is why Ecuador is in negotiations with Russia, Chile and China to purchase as soon as possible the necessary vaccines to vaccinate the entire Ecuadorian population. The vaccination process started in march and is active in its first stage, which has been extended more than expected.

If you reside in Ecuador and your immigration status is regularized but you have not been able to enroll in the vaccination process, please contact us and we will help you with the whole process without any additional cost. We have helped dozens of people to access the vaccination process, as the page is in Spanish and often can be a limitation for the foreign community in Ecuador.

Bluebox Asesores cares about you. We have a wide network of service providers that can help you solve any type of immigration problem. We help you channel your paperwork through our office.

Book sale to raise money for local animal rescue organizations

Selling paperbacks and some hardbound books to help these local charities here in Cuenca. Books range in genre from Fiction, Non-fiction, Science Fiction, Classics. All books are in good or excellent condition. The price regardless of ‘size’ is $5 each or 3 for $12. For a list of titles and authors please text or email me. I will send you the list by email. Most of these authors are popular and well-known. The books that are still available are my favorite ones. Really good reads.

How it works: You pick your books and I’ll reserve them for you. On my dime, with the purchase of $12 or more, I will courier your books to your place for free and you pay the courier for only the books delivered. Then find a comfy place and enjoy a good read during these cool and wet days. I will take the money from the book sales and donate them to the following animal charities: Patan Rescue Group We know and recognize that animals may not, at this time, be everyone’s top priority but it is ours as well as obeying the guidelines about keeping ourselves as well as others – safe. If you can—please, please help. We need money donations which can be made at –patanrescueroup@gmail.com Paws with Hope Hello Cuenca friends and friends of Paws with Hope.

We are extremely thankful for all who are involved in keeping our rescue animals fed, sheltered, and vetted. Feel free to contact me for questions or in arranging getting your books. Thanks a bunch for caring. Please call after 10 AM.

Recommendation for Stella M. Caraballo, clinical psychologist

I am happy I had counseling with Dr. Stella M. Caraballo. I used to struggle with impulsiveness, anger and trust issues towards my partner. When I first talked to Dr. Caraballo, she listened to me attentively and politely. Dr. Caraballo taught to me manage conflicts, express myself clearly, manage my emotions while speaking and receive love. Now, I enjoy my relation with loved ones, and there is no place for anger and hate in me anymore. I am so thankful to Dr. Caraballo for guiding me there.

Recommendation for Dr. Stella M. Caraballo, clinical psychologist

There are not enough words to describe the comfort I feel after each session with Dr. Caraballo. Exceptional service and she was very response. She was very professional I would recommend her to anyone.

I have learned that everyone reacts differently to stressful situations. I have been going through the most difficult time with the confinement and social distancing. I have gained perspective on these challenging times and therapy has been very supportive. I would recommend Dr. Caraballo to anyone I love.

Recommendation for M&E Pet Sitting

We had last minute plans to be away for the weekend and Mateo and Elizabeth were very accommodating. Mateo was able to stay at our place for the lock down to take care of our cats.
Mateo sent pictures and updates daily and it was great to see our babies healthy and well taking care.

When Mateo came back to return the keys both our cats came to say hi to him. Our cats usually don’t like too many people but they enjoyed Mateo’s company and care.

I highly recommend M&E for Pet Sitting needs.

Since the government has implemented new curfew measures, Bistro Yaku and Yakumama are changing our operating hours.

Our restaurant will be open Monday – Friday, from 8 AM until 7:30 PM, with enhanced bio-security protocols in place, including social distancing. We also have new outdoor tables in our garden.

Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope) celebrating 5 years of changing lives

May 1st marked 5 years since we first opened our doors. Due to the current, enhanced COVID-19 restrictions, we are holding off on our celebrations for now – so stay tuned.

In reflecting on how far we have come during this short time, our growth has been phenomenal. We started out on Tarqui in a small building with just 6 rooms. Our kitchen was so tiny that only one person could enter at a time. The office space was nestled in the overhangs of the open patio, protected with a plastic tarp for when it rained. But we made do with what we had, and utilized the space efficiently to begin putting our mission in action. That first year, we provided 659 meals and 238 nights of accommodation to those living with HIV or those at risk due to poverty.

This year’s best foreign film.

La Guarida is happy to present on the big screen:

May 4th, from 5:15 PM to 7:30 PM, Free, Mariscal Lamar y Luis Pauta, Cuenca.

Covid test accepted by American Airlines

I have copied all the information previously supplied about Covid testing to enter the USA…thank you to everyone.

Now, I have a very specific question since I have an acquaintance whose Covid test paperwork was refused in the Quito airport.

If you have flown out of Guayaquil in the last 30 days on American Airlines, did you have any issues with your negative results paperwork? If not, which company did you use to be tested? There are several and various fees.

Obviously, our goal is to spend as little as possible but not end up using a company whose paperwork gets rejected by American Airlines.

Thanks,

Income tax services

From the desk of tax accountant:

The income tax filing deadline is May 17. This means taxpayers have a chance to e-file tax returns until then without filing the extension form 4868. To request a tax extension, all you need to do is to submit Form 4868 by May 17. It also provides taxpayers an opportunity to claim 2020 stimulus payments, if not received, simply by filing 1040 for refund.

Problems with internet/phone/electricity/water/healthcare bills?

I am a law student at the University of Cuenca, I have finished all my courses and am writing my thesis, so, almost-but-not-quite a lawyer. I can help you with any difficulties you are having with billing (facturas) for internet service, phone plans, electricity or water bills, coordination between hospitals and health insurance plans, etc.

I can take a look at your current internet or cell phone plan and see if there is a cheaper alternative. I am not a health insurance agent and do not represent insurance companies, but if you are having difficulties in communicating with a private insurance company and your agent isn’t being helpful, I can advocate on your behalf to get the health care benefits that you have paid for.

Scratching posts, towers, gym and cat houses

The cat by nature is a very curious and playful animal. Scratching is one of his “hobbies” that helps him file his nails and is a way of channeling his anxiety. If your cat scratches the sofa at home for any reason, you do not have to be angry. Perhaps you are not offering him another alternative or you do not know that he needs a toy to channel his energy. That is why you have to know the star toy, the scratching post for cats.

– The scraper helps keep your nails healthy and strong.

– It serves as a refuge for you when you seek tranquility.

– One of the most important benefits it provides to your cat is that it keeps him active and helps him avoid health problems.

– Helps calm your instinct for curiosity.

– To play and release stress.

We make to order and deliver in 3 days. Strong, solid and stable.
Includes transportation.
