The University of Cuenca’s TOEFL review course (Test of English as a Foreign Language) will be starting again in another week. In the past we have had a gringo volunteer who did a one-hour session each week with the students.
You can lead the discussion from your home; all you need is a desktop or laptop computer with an internet connection, camera and audio (most laptops have a camera and microphone built in).
There are anywhere from 5-12 participants in each session. There are more TOEFL students in each class than that, but the pronunciation session is optional, so generally there are 4-7 people in a session. Many are adult learners, all are university students or graduates. Connecting to Zoom is free.
The session involves developing a topic for discussion before the class (generally held on Fridays, online via Zoom, either late afternoon or early evening). Items from the news are always interesting. The previous volunteer (who is going to be traveling during the month of October) has previously used topics that can be re-used as well, or modified. Topics have included health care in Ecuador vs. in the U.S., the Ecuadorian presidential elections, the U.S. criminal justice system vs. Ecuador’s system, the “Big Money” pyramid scheme here in Ecuador, fuel subsidies, Jeffrey Epstein and IESS’s funding problems (pensions and health care).
If you’d be interested in filling in for the regular volunteer for the month of October, please contact,
Elisabeth Rodas: email@example.com .
Donations (up to $50) will earn the match so let’s consider what that really means!
Your $50 provides food kits to TWO families for a month
and the 50% match provides food kits to ONE family for a month
This means that your generosity provides food kits to THREE families for a month
This match expires today, September 17, 2021, at 11:59:59 PM EDT
Please consider becoming a monthly donor by choosing the red donate button on our website and choosing the monthly donor tab.
The offer for the match expires today but our kits feed the hungry every day.
Thank you for helping so many people in our community.

This little 6-7 week-old kitten showed up at my home meowing and very hungry. He looks very healthy and very clean. He loves attention shows no fear of my dogs (Rotties) and enjoyed a bath from the female. He loves being held and if I didn’t already have 7 full grown babies I would keep him. Unfortunately, due to their ages it would be a huge disruption in the clan and I would fear for his safety.
I would like him to be loved in an indoor environment. Email if you are looking for a little fur ball of joy.
I attached photos (I think) but if not successful will send.

The renewed and reinvigorated Gran Feria Sabatino’s is set. Out of an abundance of caution, only 12 vendors–as opposed to the nearly 40 in the past–will be participating until we see how the flow works. However, these 12 vendors offer premier artisan products ranging from a variety of foods to handmade accessories and beautiful roses and other blooms. Put this date on your calendar and plan on arriving early for the best selection.(more…)

October 9 is a long weekend as we celebrate the Independence of Guayaquil. Some banks and stores may close on Friday, October 8.
September and October can be beautiful in the mountains or on the coast. Spring is in the air, trees are leafing out once again (those few deciduous trees we have here) and flowers are unfurling. Kites may be flying, too. It’s a great time to rent a car and travel around the country now that the road to Guayaquil has been partially opened once again.

Dear friends we have hemp seeds in our store. We share with you some information about it:
Hemp seeds contain almost as much protein as soybeans. In every 30 grams (g) of seeds, or about 3 tablespoons, there are 9.46 g of protein.
These seeds are a complete source of protein, meaning that they provide all nine essential amino acids.
Amino acids are the building blocks for all proteins. The body cannot produce nine of these acids, so a person must absorb them through the diet.
Minerals and vitamins
Hemp seeds contain an impressive array of vitamins and minerals and are especially rich in: vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium. They are also a good source of iron, zinc, and B vitamins, including: niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin B 6, folate

Our garage sale has been extremely popular, so we are continuing it all this week. So far, we have been able to raise over $2,000 to support the work of Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope). We encourage you to drop in from 10 AM to 4 PM and visit our Garage Sale, Esperanza Thrift Shop or our Expat Services Center. Ask to speak with me and I can give you a tour of the foundation facilities.
Turn things you do not need into support for those facing critical illness or living in poverty. If you have items you wish to donate, we would be more than happy to pick them up. Either email or phone us. Thank you for your support.
