In yet another one-way communication of an opinion piece published elsewhere on May 2 that this time wisely prohibited comments, once again I feel compelled to take a positive perspective and begin a productive discussion about what the world has been dealing with for too long. The rage the author had was aimed at those who are anti-vaxxers and anti-science, taking the safe and simplistic stance that if only every person receives the vaccine, we wouldn’t have lost so much. I believe rage toward those few is unproductive. No matter what the political bent of the US mainstream media, it appears nobody wants to discuss the elephant: sustaining an unhealthy lifestyle compromises the immune system, making one a perfect host for a virus. Chronic illness left unmanaged becomes acute illness in a pandemic, which results in a great burden on one’s family, community and the healthcare system.(more…)
My husband lost his Motorola smartphone yesterday (Monday) morning. He’s quite sure it fell out of his pocket as he was exiting the cab we took after grocery shopping. We don’t know the name/number of the driver/taxi, but we were picked up at Supermaxi el Vergel and dropped at Edf. Santa Maria on Agustin Cueva. The driver looked to be in his 20s, maybe early 30s. The Covid partition in his cab was a solid black material, not plastic or plexiglass as many are. My husband’s phone has a brownish-black cover and has phone numbers taped to the back of it, inside the cover. If you found this phone or if you’re the driver, please contact us.

About the artist…
Lorena Duca was born in California almost 3/4 of a century ago, and was greatly influenced by the cultural revolution of her generation in the ’60s and ’70s.
She took her first of many trips out of the country at 19-years old, visiting most of Europe. After returning home to study Anthropology and Spanish language and Literature at San Francisco State in the late sixties (while being a hippie), she left for Latin America in 1968 and worked 2 years in Mexico City as a translator for a Mexican writer/investigator/poet. It was with Señor Magaloni and his investigating colleagues of all things Pre-Columbian, that Loren was encouraged to travel to the great Mayan and Incan cities (“ruins”) of the Americas.
Some of her early adventures include sneaking in and spending the night on the Pyramid of the Sun at Teotihuacan, Mexico, and later, walking for 5 days on the Inca trail to Macchu Picchu with her husband and 2 others, without seeing another soul (only a curious Condor!) She explored rivers and jungles and Andean peaks in Colombia and Ecuador off and on for 40-50 years, but it was the friendly people and music that brought her back to retire in Cuenca, Ecuador 6+ years ago.
After 11 years between Colombia and the US, she and her family finally settled down to live in the beautiful small town of Ashland, Oregon, working as a Bilingual Educator and program coordinator for 35+ years and raising her family there. Every summer she and her family would travel somewhere, through Mexico, Central and So. America, and later to China, Middle East, Africa. She was a summer missionary for 6 trips, always carrying a sketchbook and small high-quality watercolors in her backpack. She filled many travel journals of what she saw, people and cultures she observed, and lives imagined or idealized.
Her colorful themes are a reflection and collection of people and places she has met, and from there she paints her memories – past, present and future.
Friday, May 7th, from 10 AM to 5 PM, Presidente Cordova 1-77, between Miguel Angel Estrella y Manuel Vega, Cuenca.
From the desk of tax accountant: The income tax filing deadline is May 17. This means taxpayers have chance to e-file tax returns until then without filing the extension form 4868. To request a tax extension, all you need to do is to submit Form 4868 by May 17. It also provides taxpayers an opportunity to claim 2020 stimulus payments, if not received, simply by filing 1040 for refund.
