Has anyone or is anyone shipping their pets back to the US right now? Since they can’t be shipped on the plane in cargo and with this ridiculous CDC embargo has anyone been able to find a way to get them back?

Volunteer opportunity – online English pronunciation class, one hour/week

The University of Cuenca’s TOEFL review course (Test of English as a Foreign Language) will be starting again in another week. In the past we have had a gringo volunteer who did a one-hour session each week with the students.

You can lead the discussion from your home; all you need is a desktop or laptop computer with an internet connection, camera and audio (most laptops have a camera and microphone built in).

There are anywhere from 5-12 participants in each session. There are more TOEFL students in each class than that, but the pronunciation session is optional, so generally there are 4-7 people in a session. Many are adult learners, all are university students or graduates. Connecting to Zoom is free.

The session involves developing a topic for discussion before the class (generally held on Fridays, online via Zoom, either late afternoon or early evening). Items from the news are always interesting. The previous volunteer (who is going to be traveling during the month of October) has previously used topics that can be re-used as well, or modified. Topics have included health care in Ecuador vs. in the U.S., the Ecuadorian presidential elections, the U.S. criminal justice system vs. Ecuador’s system, the “Big Money” pyramid scheme here in Ecuador, fuel subsidies, Jeffrey Epstein and IESS’s funding problems (pensions and health care).

If you’d be interested in filling in for the regular volunteer for the month of October, please contact,

Found: adorable kitten

This little 6-7 week-old kitten showed up at my home meowing and very hungry. He looks very healthy and very clean. He loves attention shows no fear of my dogs (Rotties) and enjoyed a bath from the female. He loves being held and if I didn’t already have 7 full grown babies I would keep him. Unfortunately, due to their ages it would be a huge disruption in the clan and I would fear for his safety.
I would like him to be loved in an indoor environment. Email if you are looking for a little fur ball of joy.

I attached photos (I think) but if not successful will send.

Free Language Exchange by YEES

A fun and relaxing environment to use your Spanish and English. Come and join us at Selina’s terrace (Calle Larga 7-93) every Saturday for a chance to practice with native English and Spanish speakers and meet new friends. This Exchange is basically a casual conversation where we switch languages every 30 minutes. This event is free. However, due to the pandemic, don’t forget to follow these directions:

– If the receptionist ask what do you want, tell him/her that you’re a member of #YEES and there’s a language exchange at the terrace that you’re attending.
– Even though Selina’s terrace is an open space and they have all the biosecurity measures, the pandemic isn’t over yet so don’t forget to keep social distance.
– The conversation will be spontaneous as usual. The only rule is switching languages every 30 minutes. You decide which language goes first.

September 18th, from 2 to 4 PM, Free event, Calle Larga 7-93, Cuenca.

Gran Feria Sabatino’s is back on Saturday, October 2

The renewed and reinvigorated Gran Feria Sabatino’s is set. Out of an abundance of caution, only 12 vendors–as opposed to the nearly 40 in the past–will be participating until we see how the flow works. However, these 12 vendors offer premier artisan products ranging from a variety of foods to handmade accessories and beautiful roses and other blooms. Put this date on your calendar and plan on arriving early for the best selection.

Help me to help by Sole. Thank you all

Hi all,
With the cash that you all have been donating at La Yunta to “Help Me To Help” by Sole and also with the generous donations of clothes and school supplies from Cuenca families, this month we are going to Chunazana in Nabon to donate food, books and clothes to 14 families.

Also there is Mario, a 7-year old boy from Cuenca who needs a hearing aid to be able to hear.

Thanks to the money we collected with Help Me To Help we donated $100 to him to add to the fund his family has created to be able to buy for him a new hearing aid.

So, if you want to keep helping families in Azuay you always can drop by La Yunta and leave your donations.

Thank you again from our hearts,

Don’t want to pay kilometers? – Cuenca Car Share

In September and October, we are offering free kilometers with your rental. Renting a car can be a hassle because of all the extra charges from the major companies. With Cuenca Car Share for September and October, you can forget about paying for the kilometers because we offer unlimited mileage (in kilometers) for these two months. You also can forget about paying for car insurance, we include it with every rental.

October 9 is a long weekend as we celebrate the Independence of Guayaquil. Some banks and stores may close on Friday, October 8.

September and October can be beautiful in the mountains or on the coast. Spring is in the air, trees are leafing out once again (those few deciduous trees we have here) and flowers are unfurling. Kites may be flying, too. It’s a great time to rent a car and travel around the country now that the road to Guayaquil has been partially opened once again.

Hemp seeds / Gramm Bulkshop

Dear friends we have hemp seeds in our store. We share with you some information about it:

Protein

Hemp seeds contain almost as much protein as soybeans. In every 30 grams (g) of seeds, or about 3 tablespoons, there are 9.46 g of protein.

These seeds are a complete source of protein, meaning that they provide all nine essential amino acids.

Amino acids are the building blocks for all proteins. The body cannot produce nine of these acids, so a person must absorb them through the diet.

Minerals and vitamins
Hemp seeds contain an impressive array of vitamins and minerals and are especially rich in: vitamin E, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium. They are also a good source of iron, zinc, and B vitamins, including: niacin, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin B 6, folate

Recommendation for Segundo Prado appliance

Last year, the lock on my Cuisinart bowl broke. I called Segundo to see if he could repair it. He took it and brought it back the next day, nicely repaired. It locks properly and allows me to use the food processor.

This week, my rain showerhead fell down while I was cleaning it. The edge that was impacted immediately split into two sheets of metal. I called Segundo, he took it and reported back that no type of adhesive or bonding was working. He would have to try something else. Yesterday, he brought it nicely put together with rivets which match the showerhead pores. Voila!! Segundo knows his stuff, finds a solution, speaks perfect English, is very personable and reasonable. He’s on WhatsApp.

I was in Cuenca for 2 days (08/30-31) and after day 1 of walking around the city by ourselves we realized it was best to try and get a tour of the city to limit the amount of walking since we were with someone over 70 and to have a comfortable way to get around and visit what we missed the first day.

I had seen recommendations for Orlando Siguenza on here so I contacted him. Although he was already booked for the next day he was able to accommodate us in the morning for a 4 hour tour of the city. It was one of the best decisions we made on our entire 12-day trip to Ecuador.

Orlando was a pleasure. He picked up us at the hotel and took us to the Prohibido Centro Cultural (highly recommended!), La catedral de la immaculado concepcion, a few plazas, Eercado 10 de agosto, Panama hat museum, Mirador de Turi among a few others.

He is personable and extremely knowledgeable. If you want to truly learn something about what you are seeing, you will be very happy. Perfect English as well.

He gave me permission to share his contact info:

Recommendation for Unas con Estill, nail salon

I moved to Cuenca about two years ago. I experienced five different nail salons here before finding Unas. Several of which were recommended to me, but none could compare to the quality of the nail technicians at Unas.

These women are masters of their trade and artists in the doing. Thirty plus years of wearing acrylic nails, by necessity, allows me this platform to recommend these ladies and state that they are truly the best technicians I have ever experienced…anywhere in the world.

Recommendation for David Jackson (My Cuenca Nerd), tech repair

I had an iPad in need of repair. The screen had been lifting and separating from the bottom part of the iPad for some time. It had gotten so bad that light was shooting out from all side but one. I had seen several recommendations for David in GringoPost and called him. He responded immediately and made an appointment to come assess the damages. He was on time to the appointment, explained in detail his assessment, possible concerns and his quote for repair and timeframe. All was done as promised and I couldn’t be happier.

Question regarding bringing items into Quito airport from abroad

Hello everyone. I was wondering if anyone thinks I would have an issue if I were to bring a small air fryer oven with me in my luggage through customs at the Quito airport. It is not brand-new if that makes any difference. I would be bringing it for my personal use, not to sell.

Nervous Nick

APshipping

I ordered one item and when the package from Servi Entrega arrived, it was a bottle of supplements and not my shoes. This is the third time I have had a problem with my order and I have complied with all APshipping rules. I have emailed Pam several times in the last few days and have received ZERO responses from her, seems like she is trying to avoid answering me. She just received about $200 worth of items for me from Amazon and I have asked if they arrived, she has chosen not to respond to this request also. Hopefully they are still a viable business. Has anyone else had any problems lately?

Indigenous law student in desperate need of laptop to continue studies

Any feminists out there who believe in empowering indigenous women leaders? Here is your opportunity.

She is so special! At only 19 years old, this Cotacachi indigenous woman is:

1) an elected regional officer for a major political party
2) an amateur boxer
3) gracious, warm, insightful, humble and smart as a whip
4) a poet and
5) an enrolled university law student taking classes in Ecuadorian Constitutional law so that she soon will be able to defend the rights of her Kichwa Runa people

The owner of the laptop she borrowed in order to attend university classes this semester needs to get it back from her or he will not be able to complete his own studies.

Next week this young woman will be left without an electronic device that could allow her to continue her remote law classes at a Quito university.

The only thing standing between her, a successful professional path and fulfilling her potential as a powerful female indigenous leader in our province is . . .

. . . one new or gently used laptop.

If I could afford to help her, I would do so in a second. But I have urgent medical and dental treatment expenses that can’t be postponed for even one more month.

Kichwa Runa culture strongly disapproves of asking others directly to help with their needs and especially public “begging.” So, I am asking on her behalf without identifying her publicly.

If you have any interest in helping this young woman stay in school to complete her law degree, I will be happy to send you photos and identifying information privately. No obligation, of course. Just message me. Thank you.

And it continues…

Our garage sale has been extremely popular, so we are continuing it all this week. So far, we have been able to raise over $2,000 to support the work of Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope). We encourage you to drop in from 10 AM to 4 PM and visit our Garage Sale, Esperanza Thrift Shop or our Expat Services Center. Ask to speak with me and I can give you a tour of the foundation facilities.

Turn things you do not need into support for those facing critical illness or living in poverty. If you have items you wish to donate, we would be more than happy to pick them up. Either email or phone us. Thank you for your support.

About: Based on John Steinbeck’s 1937 classic tale of two travelling companions, George and Lennie, who wander the country during the Depression, dreaming of a better life for themselves. Then, just as heaven is within their grasp, it is inevitably yanked away. The film follows Steinbeck’s novel closely, exploring questions of strength, weakness, usefulness, reality and utopia, bringing Steinbeck’s California vividly to life.

Getting to La Guarida is simple. Just jump on the tranvia and get off La Cuadra Station. We continue to be the best rated restaurant according to TripAdvisor. Don’t miss out this incredible film with an equally amazing dinner.
