Casa de Bienestr – pulmonary function testing (spirometry )

Spirometry helps diagnose many respiratory diseases, restrictive obstructive lung disorders, diagnose asthma, chronic bronchitis from bronchial asthmas.

It also explains the cause of symptoms in patients who are clinically healthy as the initial detention of small airway disease.

The spirometry helps to assess the course of the disease and the therapy to follow.

Spirometry usually measures:
• How much air you can blow out in a relaxed manner, like a gentle sigh out, until your lungs are empty (slow vital capacity or VC)
• The amount of air you can blow out in one second. With healthy lungs and airways, you can generally blow out most of the air from your lungs in one second (forced expiratory volume in one second, or FEV1)
• The total amount of air you can blow out in one complete breath after taking a deep breath in. You will be asked to blow out as hard and as fast as you can until your lungs are empty. This is called your forced vital capacity or FVC

Dr. Fernando Juca will look at how much air you can blow out in the first second (FEV1), and compare to the total amount (FVC) giving a percentage of air you can blow out in the first second.

He will compare your measurements with the normal range of values. The curves drawn by the spirometer showing the pattern of airflow are also essential to help understand your results and further test that it might need to determine the right treatment for you.

Dr. Fernando Juca can help you determine the stage and the best treatment for you. Call us to make you an appointment or to coordinate a house call.
