Hello everybody, We are Lea and Alisia from Germany, new temporary expats in Cuenca, Ecuador and we would like to get to know the community here a bit more and share with you our experience as volunteers in the non-profit organization FUPEC (“Familias Unidas por las Enfermedades Catastróficas”), that is helping patients who suffer from cancer or other catastrophic illnesses.
We are happy to be in this beautiful city and learning everyday something new about the country, people and language. Working in the organization has shown us many things about the healthcare system and the great number of cases of these illnesses in Ecuador.
They are currently working in two categories: services and projects. A few examples are that they offer legal advice, social support, therapy workshops, assistance in personal hygiene supplies, food, clothes, wigs and many more. On the other hand, they generate information about patients and their treatment in hospitals, publish their own research, make workshops for women about cancer and enlighten about the rights and obligations of the patients.
And all of this on a national level for every patient including their family members no matter what background they have.
Therefore, we are looking forward to three more exciting months here, helping others in need and having a cultural exchange. If you are interested to join our team or leave a donation, you can contact us here:
