Cozy, elegant San Blas barrio studio inside eight-home private gated passageway.
For those who already know Parque Calderón and San Sebastián and are looking to expand their perspective of El Centro, the neighborhood of San Blas — east of Calderón — has a captivating Cuencan flavor that is agreeably all its own. (For the unfamiliar, Parque San Blas is where all of the major parades begin. Recent examples are the Carnival and Cuenca anniversary celebration processions.)
This barrio is bordered by Cuenca’s two oldest churches, both built in 1557, the year Cuenca was officially founded. On the west side is Iglesia Todos Santos with its convent, gardens, school, and view toward Turi. On the east is Cuenca’s beauty, Iglesia San Blas, built completely from pink travertine marble excavated just west of the city.
The studio sits near the east end of Calle Larga, about a block from the Rio Tomebamba, the locally-famed Taita croissant bakery, and the Incan ruins around Pumapungo. Unlike many other residences in El Centro, it sits on a quiet street with no buses or major traffic, away but accessible from El Centro’s noisier and busier thoroughfares. Largely undiscovered by tourists, this El Centro quarter is well known to local residents and long-term expat embeds. It thrives with local activity, diverse restaurants, bakeries, coffee and chocolate shops, traditional huecas, and authentic Cuencanan culture.
We named this studio our El Centro hideout because we can pass from a restful sanctuary behind a cheerful green gate and in a moment be in the middle of the bustle and vibrant activity that gave Cuenca its world heritage designation. For specific orientation, the studio is six blocks to Parque San Blas, five to the largest Coral hipermercado in El Centro, four to Parque de la Madre, and three to Huayna Cápac and Museo Pumapungo.
The studio faces south and is set on the ground floor. Its doorway opens onto a private sidewalk and paved area set behind a locked wrought-iron gate allowing the small collection of eight homes to enjoy off-street privacy and outdoor activities. The studio is part of the owners’ traditional building, which was constructed from local artisan brick with iconic archways and south-facing windows. It has its own private entrance, separate from the owners’ doorway. It comes furnished with full kitchen, granite island, gas stove with hood, washing machine (no dryer), fiber optic internet, flat screen television, warm LED lighting, and tiled bathroom.
Price for 6-month lease, $500/month including electricity, water, and internet. $600/month if no lease. No smoking or pets.
