Explosive sound?

Can anyone tell me what the bomb sounds are that happen 1 to 2 times an hour all day from about 7 in the morning and a good part of the night sometimes after midnight? I describe them as bomb sounds because that is what it sounds like to me – usually one single loud explosive sound.

I would like to know the significance of this practice in Ecuador.
