Tax on interest income?

I have a question for those of you who have obtained residency in Ecuador. Do you have to pay taxes on the interest income you made from those CDs? I am not talking about the 2% withholding if your CD is less than a year. I heard you pay taxes on income above $11,000? That includes wage, salary, commission, but does it include interest income? Do you have to file a tax return just like in US and Canada? Thanks in advance.

Do I need to bring my passport to the Galapagos?

Hi everyone. If I bring my Ecuadorian cedula with me when I visit the Galapagos, do I also have to bring my US passport? I really hate to risk losing it if it is not necessary.

Double your donation for the dogs of Cuenca!

A generous and anonymous donor will match every donation received to purchase the land for FAAN’s (Familia Amor Animal Foundation) permanent dog shelter through March 15, 2023.

The $20,000 grant provides an opportunity for the animal welfare group to raise $40,000 so they can move the 140 dogs in our care to a safe sanctuary sooner rather than later.

This means $25 becomes $50, your gift of $100 will become $200 and a generous gift of $1,000 becomes $2,000.

FAAN is dedicated to creating a sustainable and community-based shelter and continuing with their mission to educate, spay/neuter and facilitate a community where all animals are respected and cared for by the collective community.

Will pay for housing and food for puppy fostering for our 6-month-old puppy poodle mix. He is current on all vaccinations, and has been sterilized. He is super cute and smart but has lots of energy so a quinta or house with a yard would be ideal. We are traveling back to US and will be back in a month or so and do not want to give him up as he has been with us since he was 3 weeks old and my son has bonded with him.

Please call for details and pictures. Any suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you Expat community!

“Real Deal” BBQ at Pájaro y Bestia

We feature pork ribs that are cooked, from beginning to end, in a carbon fired smoker. The process takes approximately 5 hours – 1 hour to prep and 4 hours to cook. We are Real Deal BBQ. The pork shoulders and pork belly that we cook for sandwiches also are fully cooked on smokers, and the cooking time will typically exceed 12 hours.

What a concept – a BBQ joint that actually cooks BBQ. Pressure cookers and crock pots are for beans, not for BBQ.

We price our ribs by the pound, but we sell them in quarter pound increments. So, for only $2.75, you can come dip a toe in the water and discover why we say that we are the “Real Deal.” But to borrow a phrase from someone else’s ad campaign – I bet you can’t eat just one.

Please come by this week and try one rib. After tasting it, then you can vote in the “Best of GringoPost” and honestly say that this is the Best BBQ in the city. The Real Deal.

Sé la bestia!!!

Recommendation for Sandra Avilés, Spanish and Italian teacher

I am reposting this recommendation as I have some additional important information.

I want to again highly recommend my Spanish teacher, Sandra Avilés, to other expats learning either Spanish or Italian – she teaches both languages. She can work in person or remotely by Zoom. She can come to your house.
Sandra is very bright, competent, detail-oriented, fun, and friendly. She has a bachelor´s degree in teaching Italian, which she earned in Italy and which I think is very relevant for her ability to teach Spanish clearly. Sandra is currently in a program at Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja for teaching foreign languages in general. She speaks good English.

Sandra believes, as do I, in the importance of immediate corrections by the teacher; that is, I like that she interrupts my speech to correct my mistakes, rather than us just having a nice conversation.

Recommendation for Santorinos, restaurant

For the past 7 years, I have eaten lunch here each week with my ladies card group. We have followed them through several location changes. You would think that by now we would be tired of their food. But really, just the opposite. While they are known for their pizza, they have Italian pasta dishes and meat and vegetable dishes too. Their vegetables are the best in town; fresh, steamed and cooked perfectly.

We commented recently that for the quality of food they serve, they should be much busier. So, I wanted to share our experience and suggest you give them a try.

Recommendation for Don Camaron, restaurant

I learned about this place from friends and I have been back several times. This neighborhood spot has 2 businesses: a restaurant and selling flash-frozen seafood.

The restaurant serves seafood dishes that are tasty at a good price. I have purchased their frozen shrimp to make shrimp cocktail and they were great. They have a huge assortment of frozen fish, shrimp, crab and lobsters.

Family run business, nice people.

Rob Gray:

Texas-style Chicken Fried Steak at Joes’ Secret Garden

*‘Down Home’ Southern Chicken Fried Steak dinner.
Lightly breaded tender beef with just a ‘soft’ spice kick.
Fried golden … lightly bathed in a roasted pepper gravy and like Southern comfort, if cooked just right, it tastes sooo good. This fried steak is an American dish that is often considered the best comfort food south of the Kentucky border.
Herb, Rosemary and Garlic Oven Roasted Chicken –

Dinner includes:

Double D’s: There’s still time to order, but not much

When you see tomatillos, grab them! That’s exactly what we did. They’ll be the star of this menu’s casserole: Chicken, seasoned rice, black beans, and corn combined with our homemade rotel and layered with corn tortillas. Our zesty and tangy roasted tomatillo sauce finishes it off. The salad is the perfect accompaniment. Shredded cabbage, black beans, corn, bell pepper, and pickled red onion are tossed in a creamy dressing. For the dessert, chocolate and dulce de leche are sandwiched between layers of oatmeal crust.

Stacked Chicken Enchiladas with Roasted Tomatillo Sauce: $25 (6-8 servings); $19 (4-5 servings)
Southwest Salad: $8/lb (2-3 servings)
Carmelitas: $3 each
