It’s just around the corner, Christmas is going to sneak up on us! So, get a head start on those decorations and join us for a two-hour workshop on making yarn Santa ornaments.

$20 includes all materials and tea and cookies.

The workshop will be held at the Hearts of Gold office from 10 AM-noon on Tuesday, Nov. 29. The address for Hearts of Gold is Chimborazo L-3 y Esmeraldas. Drive south on Esmeraldas from Remigio Crespo, about four blocks until you come to the sports arena. Turn left on Chimborazo. Hearts of Gold is the last house on the left in that first block.

Upper-Intermediate Spanish course starts next week at ¡Vamos!

An Upper-Intermediate Spanish Course will start on November 22.

If you are able to communicate but still feel frustrated in certain situations or would like to take your Spanish to the next level, you have found what you need. The learning target of this course is to reach the point where you can express fluently and spontaneously enough to comfortably communicate with other Spanish speakers. We aim at producing clear, detailed speech on many subjects and explain a complex viewpoint on a topic.

It takes place every Monday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 PM and it will last for six weeks. The course fee is $150 and it includes a workbook and access to the Cultural Workshops on Saturday Mornings.

What should I do if I get into a car accident in Ecuador?

In Ecuador only 23% of Ecuadorians who own a vehicle are privately insured. Due to this, the SPATT (Transit Accident Payment Services) was created in order to provide protection for people in accidents who do not have the economic resources available to cover related health costs.

“The creation of SPPAT corresponds to a policy designed to guarantee public health and above all dignify citizens, especially the most vulnerable who do not have any type of protection against unforeseen accidents throughout the national territory” (Romel Castro, Executive Director SPATT).

The SPATT is required insurance at a reduced cost that is paid together with the vehicle registration cost. The cost is subject to variations depending on the model and year of your vehicle and is only paid once a year. This insurance covers emergencies up to $3,000, ambulance expenses up to $200, funeral expenses up to $400, and in the event of death a family member of the victim can obtain economic relief at a maximum of $5,000. Once SPATT is applied, your private vehicle insurance may cover some additional health expenses, although it is important to remember that not all private vehicle policies have civil liability insurance. This is something to verify when buying a policy for your vehicle. In Ecuador, the policies cover not only the contracting party but also civil liability of any kind, as long as you have contracted this service within your policy. If you opt for a very low cost policy you could only obtain coverage in cases of total loss which could give you larger legal and economic problems than expected. You would be required to cover the expenses of the affected party in its entirety on your own.

Offering Spanish Classes for beginners 2, in small group in November

Spanish Classes for beginners 2 in a small group for November 21st.
Immerse yourself in a new concept of learning Spanish quickly and efficiently. Learn Spanish with a qualified and experienced teacher. You will cover basic topics, useful for everyday conversation, including talking about yourself, making hotel or dinner reservations, take taxis, etc. You will be introduced to various language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing skills with group exercises and weekly homework).

If you are planning to relocate to Cuenca, either temporarily or for good, learning Spanish is a must in order to get the most out of your experience. The real world – full of Cuencanos – is right outside your door and by speaking just a bit more of Spanish you will quickly find life is so much more exciting.
