Skin cancer specialist/IESS question

This is a 2 pronged request:

1) I have had 16 skin cancers … 14 basal cell and 2 squamous cell and need a specialist in Cuenca that can do a complete exam and removal if necessary. Any recommendations?
2) Because I use private doctors for everything, I am thinking of not paying my IESS for 3 months while I am out of Ecuador. I was told that when I come back, I can just pay that one month and would qualify immediately for emergency care but would have to wait 3 months for other things. I haven’t used them in the 8 years I have been here so that wouldn’t bother me. Is that information correct?

Mujeres Con Exito back to school fundraiser

Mujeres Con Exito’s
Annual Fundraiser for School Supplies

It is time once again, for our mothers to start worrying about sending their kids back to school.

Our dilemma this year: 35 shelter children living at Casa Mara Amor + 60 shelter children living outside the shelter = 95 students x $100 = $9,500. This is the amount needed to provide our children with shoes, uniforms, underwear, backpacks and supplies.

Six years and going strong

August 19, 2016 we first opened our doors. For six years now, we have turned your unneeded things into something valuable to those in need. Esperanza Thrift Shop is Cuenca’s only legally registered charity Thrift Shop. We have provided thousands of free items of clothing, household items, beds and linens to those who are in desperate need. Things that cannot be used or sold, are used in our craft programs. Nothing goes to waste at Esperanza Thrift Shop.

From the money we raise, we provide medicines, school supplies and more. The Thrift Shop is an integral part of supporting the work of Foundation Hogar de Esperanza. Inventories are low and we need your help in supporting those in need.

To schedule a pickup you can call or email us. Or you can drop off your donations to us at Juan Montalvo 8-18 and Mariscal Sucre.

Dog for Adoption

Kenso is still waiting for his new family and home. He is 7 months old, 40 pounds, neutered, good with other animals and extremely sweet. Australian Shepard and French Bulldog mix. He loves to be right by your side and has lots of affection to give.

He is a bit of an escape artist so he would require a gated home, but most importantly lots of love and attention. Since he is still a puppy he will also need further training but he’s eager to please and has been learning quickly.

We would keep him if we could but we already have another dog who was rescued from someone who was trying to use him for dog fights and while we’ve never had any problems before he’s started to show signs of aggressive towards Kenso and we’re worried about how things could progress so we’re hoping to find another foster home for him sooner than later because we want to make sure all our animals, him included, are safe.

If anyone can help with even another temporary home, please let us know.

Public transportation in Quito

Hi folks, I’m updating a guidebook on Ecuador and have a couple of things to check for Quito, which perhaps some of you who live there might know…

1. How much is the cost of a taxi ride (yellow cab), more or less, from one end of the city to the other?
2. Do they use the electronic cards on buses there now (i.e. no cash), like in Cuenca?

Thank you so much for any info on these two points….

Am interested in anybody’s experience working with this cooperative and opening up a Plaza Fijo or CD.

Did they make your monthly payments as promised? Did you have to pay any fees to have money transferred within another Ecuador bank? They have an excellent rating of double AA-. But I am very interested to hear some responses here especially during COVID shutdown times in 2020 and 2021 did all moneys show up in your accounts as promised with your Plaza Fijo?

Recommendation for Alex Mejia, tech and computer expert

My husband and I had Alex work on our computers and were impressed by both his technical knowledge and service. He went beyond the simple items we asked him to help us with, checking our overall computer systems and implications for our computers’ performance. He recommended additional work on my older, clunky computer, giving me several options and prices. I went ahead and scheduled for a convenient time in the future, which he made note of and then followed up with me on – not used to that in Cuenca! I was blown away by how much faster and smoother my computer is running now, even though I took the easier and cheaper option he offered. Thank you, Alex!

Recommendation for Ayllu Medicina, plant medicine

Hello, If you’re searching for a plant medicine retreat in Ecuador, I recommend Ayllu Medicina. I had a life-changing experience attending their retreat, which included sweat lodges, womb wisdom, Ayahuasca ceremonies, and a San Pedro ceremony.

I have sat in different ceremonies in South America and can confidently say with Ayllu Medicina it was the most magical experience. The ceremonies respect the plants and traditions. They also ensure you are comfortable and supported throughout your time with them.

They are based close to Manglaralto on the coast at Bromelia retreat center in Dos Mangas. They run regular sweat lodges and public ceremonies off-season. Retreat season begins again in November:

Recommendation for Alex Duran, farm fresh chicken, with free delivery

I’m a chicken connoisseur and Alex’s birds are, hands down, the best flavor I’ve found. But more importantly Alex is part of a new generation farmers that really care about the bird’s health. Good feed and a lot of time outdoors makes for a healthy animal. That formula creates nutritious food with excellent flavor.

His lamb is excellent as well, and if you like beef give his a try, Alex really knows quality meats. Good restaurants are now buying his meats.

Reviews:

“Cuenca is blessed to have such an artist in Jim Gala. I’ve played with some of the greats on both sides of the Atlantic yet I have never heard such a transformative unique jazz pianist as Jim Gala. Simply put he’s a true musical genius.” —Bill Scott Broadway Singer Composer & Arranger

“No one around plays like pianist Jim Gala. At first, I couldn’t figure out what he was doing musically. I couldn’t analyze the music. It was just too beautiful and beyond my scope. All I could do was let the music wash over me and accept its effect. Jim is one of my musical idols. He is a real soul man. No one plays like him. His musical philosophy sensibility and taste are impeccable. He changed my life with his music. I actually quote him often and wrote about him in my book.”
