Do fully vaccinated travelers need PCR tests prior to entry to Ecuador?

Hi, We have been in the US since 3/17 for a wedding, returning on Tuesday 4/19. It appears on the Consulate website that at the end of March the COVID entry requirements to Ecuador were changed? The website now says that fully vaccinated travelers can present their vaccination card or a negative PCR within 72 hours. Can anyone verify this? We are both fully vaccinated, it would be great to be able to avoid getting the testing done before our return. Thank you,

Terri Nichols

Help for 5 charities

I know I have already written a few stories about the Hearts of Gold Foundation, but today is a story about a man with a heart of gold. David McDevitt has started his own campaign to help, not just Hearts of Gold and the Cuenca Soup Kitchen, but three other local charities; Helping Kids in Ecuador, Mujeres con Exito and Hogar de Esperanza. He and his wife, Sally, brought 250 high-quality, 100% cotton T-shirts back from the US. Then he created the sketch of the Cathedral domes, had it printed on the front of the shirt (see the sketch below) and then listed the 5 beneficiaries on the back. There are 2 sizes – large in black and extra-large in dark blue. I find the extra-large makes a great night shirt for me!

We are asking for a minimum donation of $15. (I actually donated $30) and you get a T-shirt as a thank-you! My dentist, Jose Acosta, donated his entire costs of a check-up and cleaning – $75!

All proceeds will be equally split among the five charities. David’s plan is that once the Ts are all gone, he will invite the head of each charity to a dinner (at his expense!) and pass out cash envelopes. He has already raised over a $1000. The Ts also make a great souvenir of Cuenca. I’m planning on bringing a few back to the States as presents for some friends!

So, how do you get one of these really kewl shirts? Check out Kolo restaurant on Sunday morning around 10:30. Dave has a semi-permanent table there and you can also see the special T-shirt Dave made for Kolo. You can also reach him by email at or give me a call, Leita at 099 194 4086 (WhatsApp). I will be happy to receive your donation and provide you with the thank you gift of a T-shirt of your choice. Then you, too, can show that you have a heart of gold.

Fix my coffee machine

I own a Nescafé dolce gusto esperta machine but it broke. Can anyone fix it please?

It was acting like it needed to be cleaned but the descaling didn’t work. So, I decided to take it apart further to deeper clean it. I couldn’t take it apart enough and upon putting it back together, the lights just blink. So, electricity is still reaching it but something is wrong.

Red Tag Moving Company is back better than ever

There is a very good reason why Debra Lynn, owner of Red Tag Moving Company has been voted the best local moving company three times in Cuenca. Debra and her crew recently packed up all our belongings and moved us to our new location. Everything was packed very carefully and efficiently. The move itself was done in a very timely fashion. Debra’s crew of three very strong men and Debra herself worked together like clockwork to load and unload our furniture, appliances, tons of artwork and dozens and dozens of boxes. They set up the beds, hooked up the appliances, and placed furniture where we wanted it, sometimes moving it more than once until it was just right. They even hung our drapes and mounted our televisions on the walls!

All of this was done tirelessly without any dents or breakage, and always with a smile. So, if you have a move planned whether it is from your home or business and no matter how large or small, email Debra Lynn today at and rest assured that you are getting the best.

Recommendation for Daniel Campos, Cooperativa Policia Nacional

We express our gratitude to Daniel Campos, financial consultant of Cooperativa Policia Nacional, in opening an account and creating an investment portfolio.

He frankly and in detail explained all the detail of opening an account, and -what was a pleasant surprise – a high percentage of the deposit. In addition, Daniel kindly agreed, at our request, and was personally present at the transfer of the amount from the bank to the Cooperativa Policia Nacional, checking the correctness of the transfer.

CPN has support from the government, which is a significant plus, and what was an absolute surprise, we received a wonderful gift from CPN, as a sign of respect for the client. Just nice.

We are highly recommending the CPN and Daniel’s great service.

Recommendation for Jerri Ridley, massage therapy

I recommend Jerri! I had acute pain when I moved my arm a certain way. Jerri found the cause; a knot in the shoulder blade. She has worked on it twice and each time the pain has diminished. This exceeds the original expectations I had. Jerri has a great attitude combined with 20 years of knowledge and practice.

Two friends have also hired him and are very pleased with his work, have hired him back. If you need assistance with anything, I recommend contacting Elix to see if he’s able to help.

Recommendation for Sabor Casero-Cositas Ricas, restaurant

It’s always nice when you find a gem, and this restaurant certainly is one. I’ve eaten there twice, and Sabor Casero will be my go-to almuerzo place when I come into Cuenca. The almuerzos are high-end, and the menu is extensive, offering choices from a beautiful Mediterranean salad to a delicious hamburger or steak. They have daily breakfast and lunch specials. The owner and chef are gracious hosts, they have put a lot of thought into this place.

Only steps up toward El Centro from JD’s Muebles on Gran Columbia, you will see their placard on the sidewalk. Buen provecho!

Recommendation for Yanuy Saludables, food catering

On a recent organized tour, we were served a lunch that was so head and shoulders above the usual fare on these occasions, that I tracked down the chef (Daniela Saldaña) and got her card. Dani made us a vegetarian lasagna that was so delicious it made me a convert to eggplant. The side salad was tasty with a tangy dressing. The star of the show though, was a lemon sponge cake that was so light, it could have floated away.

I was so impressed, I ordered the same dishes to serve at brunch at my house last week. Dani delivered the food exactly when she said she would, it was well packaged to avoid spills and squishing and was reasonably priced. All my guests were wowed. Seconds and even thirds were served.

Dani doesn’t speak much English, but we got along just fine with WhatsApp and Google translate. WhatsApp her at +593 99 211 0645 and check out her Facebook page.
