CSK: providing education, empowerment, environmentalism

The focus of the Cuenca Soup Kitchen is providing a hand up to those in need, primarily through food distribution.

We are also concerned about the environment. When CSK solidified its commitment to the environment, we knew that it would be an ongoing process which started when CSK volunteers Gary Curry and Paul Kaperick generously purchased reusable kit bags.

The process continued when CSK used proceeds from the last diaper drive to purchase reusable/biodegradable diapers developed and produced in Ecuador. Both of these decisions save money in addition to significantly reducing our impact on landfills.

Most recently CSK volunteers Nancy Galloway and Susan Beesley addressed the unique needs of women and girls. CSK beneficiaries cannot afford to buy commercial feminine hygiene products.

Nancy began with the vision of creating a reusable feminine hygiene kit for CSK beneficiaries. After much research, design, and testing, she assembled a team of volunteers to create the kits.

Each kit contains:

* reusable pads
* panties
* carry bag
* storage/soaking box

Susan, a pediatrician, volunteered to create a workshop geared to mother and daughter pairs. The workshop provides accurate information on reproductive health, contraception, and a mindful approach towards decision-making. Susan and Hearts of Gold social worker Cari Serrano discussed physical and psychological sexual health while dispelling common myths.

Thank you, Nancy, Susan, and Cari for this practical and informative experience for mothers and daughters and for the long-lasting positive impact on both the women and the environment.

A special thank you to the team that constructed the kits:

* Madelaine Barry
* Susan Beesley
* Teresa Hardy
* Elaine Haydon
* Michelle Jungerberg
* Sandy Kraft
