Best of GringoPost 2022 Winners!

Thanks and congratulations to GringoPost Subscribers and, especially…

Best Of GringoPost 2022
★ ★ ★ ★ ★

It’s been a challenging year for Cuenca and Ecuador. Thankfully, the adventurous spirit characteristic of expats shines through. To say we’ve met unforeseen challenges this year is quite an understatement. But, met them we have. Not without loss, not without adjustments but, here we are. That makes us all…WINNERS.

We’ve reached for the stars — everything from the best view point to the best restaurants, historical sites and artists — and gotten them together for a compendium of why we love living in the shadow of the Andes, and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

As on every Valentine’s Day, the votes have been counted and turned into a compendium of our Best of GringoPost, 2022, full of dozens of awards celebrating the very best our area has to offer.

GringoPost’s Best of is a celebration of success. It is a display of a collective appreciation of excellence. The voices of what has become frequently referred to as “The GringoPost Community” have now been heard.

This year, more categories than usual did not receive sufficient votes to choose clear winners. We will include these categories in future Polls so that as life returns to normal, members of the community will have the opportunity to share their appreciation for those that were not able to display their usual excellence this past year.

Now seems to be a good time to think about how we’d like our world to look in the months to come. Hopefully, we are thinking about how our lives will improve as the virus fades.

It’s a privilege to live among the Best of 2022 and then see who’s next…

Tranvia and bus passes

Aaron, I wasn’t able to respond to your request for information. I got my Tranvia pass in the underpass near Feria Libre. They have a little office there in the tunnel on the side opposite Feria Libre. They used my digitial cedula picture for the Tranvia pass. You can put money on the pass when you buy it. When I got my pass, I walked up the stairs and was at the tranvia stop. A helpful man in Tranvia uniform showed me how to use the pass. Make sure you validate your pass before you get on the Tranvia or you can pay a hefty fine.

Reclining sofa repair?

The cable on one side of my reclining sofa broke. Does anybody know of a repair person? Thanks in advance,

Sweet little Gaby

Gaby is a sweet and docile, 3 year-old female. She is very good with children and other doggies. She has been spayed, vaccinated and dewormed and is ready to become part of a forever family. She is very manageable at only 9 kg.

Gaby’s sidekick, Jimmy, was adopted last week and now it’s Gaby’s turn.

Jimmy & Gaby’s rescue circumstances are shocking. Several months ago, some hikers discovered them in the woods after trekking about 30 minutes from the road. Jimmy and Gaby were tied up, couldn’t escape, and were in deplorable condition and extremely malnourished. The hikers made videos and contacted FAAN immediately so the doggies could be rescued and nursed back to health. Even after all this trauma and rehab, Gaby is a very cheerful, tender and loving soul.

Look at her little face! Would you like to give dear Gaby the happy ending she deserves?

If you’re interested in a meet and greet, please contact me.

Adopt a pet

My husband and I recently moved to Ecuador and love it here but, as you may know, there are a lot of homeless dogs wandering the streets. We recently adopted a dog from FAAN, a local rescue group. Brisa has quickly become a member of our family and gives us so much love.

Please consider adopting a dog from one of the many rescue groups in Cuenca. Especially we older gringos may consider giving an older dog a loving home. They are usually calmer and easier to housebreak than a puppy but will give you so much joy.

Indivisible Ecuador: US primary elections coming up soon

Voting in the US midterms for Senators and Members of Congress is extremely important. Midterm elections will determine who controls both houses of congress.

The dates and requirements for voting in your party’s primary vary from state to state. Election deadlines and voting instructions for your state can be found at Just click on your state. There you will also find the deadlines and requirements for voting in the general election.

Even if you are already registered to vote in your state, you must still send a ballot request to your voter registrar in order to receive your ballot.

The states listed here are considered swing states in the upcoming elections. If you vote in one of these states, it’s extremely important that you vote this year:

Bus and tranvia cards

A recent post was inquiring about where to get bus and tranvia cards. For some kind of software glitch reason, I was not able to respond to the inquiry.

However if you want to buy Tranvia cards, you can always go to the Tranvia station at the airport, or the one in the underpass at the Feria libre. At these locations you can also obtain the discount card for senior citizens.

For a bus card you can always go to the bus office which is located just on the north side of the Terminal Terrestre. This location an also be accessed by using the Tranvia. If you want a senior citizen card for either, then you need to take your passport or cedula so that they can use the photo.

Update on Luvimar’s website disaster

Hello everybody. I hope you’re doing great. After some fighting, I was able to get the domain back, but the hosting service that I paid 3 years in advance for is not going to be unsuspended.

I know how important a website is, especially nowadays. So, I’m doing everything possible to rent a new hosting service and re-build my website. I got an old backup, so I’ll only have to re-build 50% of it.

This isn’t something that will be done fast, so I’ll ask for your patience. In the meanwhile, I’m leaving you the link that will take you straight to my products’ photo album on Facebook.

You’ll see the information and price of each product by clicking on their picture.

Recommendation for Cuenca Consignments

I have been buying and selling with Cuenca Consignments for the five years or so they have been in business, both buying and selling with them. Despite the tragic loss of Suzanne Ward, the store remains open under the capable, experienced leadership of Brenda Webb and her knowledgeable staff.

For instance last Friday I took in a bunch of clothing and miscellaneous items to sell, could not resist looking around, and purchased ((all in excellent condition) two pairs of leather boots, one pair by Naturalizer; a long, very soft and warm sweater coat; a silk dress,; and a long sleeved shirt all for much less than one pair of boots in the US. They also specialize in great furniture, bedding, dishes, housewares, tech stuff—name it, they probably have It, or will sell it for you.

Recommendation for Pablo Pesantez – mover extraordinaire, small move services

I recently had need for a mover to transfer my smallish stash of worldly possessions across town from Cuenca’s El Centro to the Hotel Oro Verde area (i.e. no big appliances nor furniture, but lots of boxes of godknowswhatall).

Pablo speaks excellent English, and he and his assistants did a great job at a most economical price. He supplied me with all the boxes I could want in advance, so I had everything packed up and ready to go on Move Day. It took a lot longer than we anticipated (3 rts. plus a gazillion stairs both at my old place, and again at my new penthouse haven overlooking the river). Let me tell ya – those lads worked hard.

In short, for smallish jobs like mine, I highly recommend Pablo Pesantez and his team. On time, great price, good communication, super conscientious, and a most amiable hard worker.

You can reach Pablo on Facebook, or by phone: 099 475 3635. He is very prompt in returning messages (in English or Spanish).

Recommendation for Susana Lovera, housekeeper

Susana is a great housekeeper. She arrives on time, and works hard. She organizes, does laundry and even cooks. She’s also a great baker. She doesn’t speak much English, but understands more than she speaks. She uses WhatsApp to help with communication.

I can recommend her without reservation.

Susana has also helped me navigate the bureaucracy to get my vaccines. She has run errands for me, shopped for me, and she took care of me through a serious illness.

Susana is also very honest. I trust her completely to shop for me, to pick up prescriptions, and to help pay bills when I can’t get out.

If you need any assistance with cleaning, shopping or day to day errands, please consider hiring Susana.

Common Grounds Bazaar new location

We are happy to announce that our fairs are back. We have changed location thinking of a better space and for your best comfort. Now we will be in República Sur proposing a new modality and schedules. Our fair will be held on the same third Saturday of each month. Saturday and Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM.

This is why if you are a local vendor/artisan who has nice items you are looking to sell or you want to get your items in front of more customers here in Cuenca, this is the perfect opportunity to participate in this event. We will provide you with a table and chairs (feel free to decorate the table however you wish). This is a great venue to show off what you have to offer and make some potentially new clients and friends along the way. If interested in signing up, please contact me at 099 285 3397. The costs per table will be $15 per day or $20 for both days, which will be charged in advance.

For customers:

Would you like to participate in meeting and supporting some of the local vendors and artisans here in Cuenca? Are you looking for that unique or one of a kind item that catches your eye? Then come on by Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th of February, between 10 AM – 6 PM at Republica Sur. The cost is free to enter and browse.
