Spanish Language Reading Group Starting at the Carolina Bookstore.
Starting Tuesday, January 25 at 11:30 AM, a Spanish language reading group will commence reading “Portrait of a Nation”, by Osvaldo Hurtado. Originally published in Spanish as “Las Costumbres de los Ecuatorianos.” The purpose of the group is to practice Spanish reading comprehension and pronunciation, and learn about the history and culture of Ecuador.
The group will meet twice weekly on Tuesdays at 11:30 AM – 1 PM and Saturdays 3 – 4:30 PM and be led by instructor Christian Canseco. Cost is $5 per session. Contact Christian: firstname.lastname@example.org to determine if your level of Spanish proficiency is sufficient. For more information on how the group functions and what it’s like to participate, please contact Linda Martin-Berke: email@example.com or Jim McBride: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Carolina Bookstore is located at 4-46 Hermano Miguel and Calle Larga. Copies of the book in Spanish will be available for $5. This is an intermediate to advanced reading group that typically reads 10-15 pages per session so advanced preparation is recommended. As required by law proof of vaccination is necessary to attend, excepted as allowed for medical reasons.
Osvaldo Hurtado is a well-regarded expert on Ecuador’s culture and politics. He has published numerous essays and monographs on Latin America and more than a dozen books on Ecuador. He was Ecuador’s vice president from 1979 – 1981 and president from 1981 – 1984. Christian, a native Cuencano who has been leading this reading group for several years, is fluent in both English and Spanish and an expert Spanish instructor. This is a fun and challenging way to improve your Spanish language skills and learn about Ecuador. Come join us.
