Hogar De Esperanza’s Craft Workshop, 2022 objectives

Thank you for your initial response to our new fundraising project, “TugZ 4 DogZ”. It has inspired us to expand to cat toys. Visit our newly revamped Instagram page to keep updated on our product line, no account necessary, https://www.instagram.com/thrift_shop.2022/ Please like and follow if you do have an account.

The craft workshop has become not only a place for clients to gather socially, but unfortunately for too many it is also a safe place to spend a few hours outside the home.

Contributing to feed hundreds of families

32.2% of Ecuador’s population, some 5.7 million people, live in poverty, according to the latest report of the Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC), presented in July 2021. And, about 2.6 million live in extreme poverty. When you contribute to the Hearts of Gold and Cuenca Soup Kitchen kits program, you help dozens of families in need and extreme poverty, to have a daily diet, and motivate them to get better opportunities. The fact of being able to help those in need, in priority issues such as food, encourages them to take the day to day with a better and different perspective, and not only to those who receive the help, but to those who contribute so that it can help families in need of a giving heart, which in many cases are basic and essential needs in a home. Being able to support and bring joy and peace of mind to these families is definitely priceless and gives a satisfaction that cannot be expressed in words.

Sunshine needs a guardian angel

Sunshine was “loaned” to us as a surrogate mother for five rescued puppies whose mother died shortly after giving birth. Sunshine was only able to provide minimal milk due to her neglected and malnourished condition. She was very eager, however, to cuddle and dote on the pups.

The puppies’ rescuer has been taking care of Sunshine for 4-5 weeks because the previous owners do not want her back and have threatened to put her out on the street. The rescuer lives in an apartment and her landlady wants Sunshine out of the apartment immediately.

Sunshine is an adorable 1.5-year old Terrier mix. She is spayed, vaccinated and wormed and has received flea meds. She is a manageable small-medium size!

We highly suspect that Sunshine endured abuse (possibly by a female) at her original “home”. Because of this, she is very tentative and nervous in new situations. She wets herself when you raise your voice to her. It’s best if she’s crated at night and has access to the outdoors during the day. She needs lots of love and patience with a special, dog-savvy person, who understands how to deal with past trauma. She appears to be fine with other doggies and older children.

But wait… there’s more! What if I told you that Sunshine comes with a complimentary doggie training session with Cuenca’s expert, Heather Conley? She is willing to offer her services free of charge for Sunshine and her person! Transportation outside of Cuenca and translation services, if needed, are not included.

Would you be willing to open your generous heart and home to Sunshine, either as a temporary foster or permanent placement?

Beware the SuperMaxi shopping bag scam

Today I went to SuperMaxi, Las Americas, only to be told I would have to buy a shopping bag, at $3 per bag. I’d made bulky purchases, so I was going to need four. Twelve dollars extra on an $88 purchase! Early a 15% penalty, for what?

As I asked what had happened, I was told they were “out of bags.” And yet, I saw every single customer and every single shopping trolley leaving with the standard blue plastic funditas — at least a dozen customers. Only I was being denied these bags. When I told the cashier to return my credit card and keep the groceries, she miraculously found blue plastic shopping bags, and plenty of them.

Is there a public department where I can identify property ownership?

Is there any kind of a registration office for homes and buildings in Cuenca? I have the address of the property and the name of the owner (the property is rented and he does not live there), but have not found a way to contact him (the tenant keeps saying they “don’t know”). My lawyer has been working on this for 3 weeks, with no results (yet).

Any information is appreciated.

High rates of return + safety/security

Because many GringoPost readers may not be familiar with Cooperco, I’d like to introduce this exceptional co-operative to you:

Established in Cuenca in 1965, Cooperco has, until now, been focused almost exclusively on servicing the Cuencano community. That exclusive emphasis has begun to shift. In addition to continuing to serve the Cuencano community, Cooperco, in 2020, expanded its capability to now include a strong initiative serving Cuenca’s international community. Starting from a decidedly strong base, Cooperco has only grown stronger. It is the cooperative that offers CDs with not only high rates of return but unparalleled safety and security of principal. That’s a combination that is hard to beat.

Cooperco has numerous offices throughout the city of Cuenca. We have English speaking account personnel that can easily explain our numerous CD options and, more importantly, how Cooperco provides a clear investment advantage. Check us out. Learn how Cooperco can help to make the difference for you. There is a reason that countless individuals as well as many financial institutions invest with us. We may not be the biggest but we are definitely the best.

Recommendation for Christian Knseco, Spanish teacher

My husband and I have been studying Spanish language both as members of small groups and with individual tutors since our arrival in Cuenca five years ago. Our experience, while mostly positive, has varied widely and we would not recommend anyone lightly. We highly recommend our tutor, Christian Knseco, with whom we have been working in our home for the last six months.

Christian is very adept at addressing our different language levels, learning needs, and interests. He is bilingual and able to explain Spanish language rules and usage to beginners as well as offer editorial advice to advanced students. Christian studied literature and writing at the University of Cuenca for five years and has taught Spanish for many years. He is a musician and poet with an intelligent, kind and flexible manner. As a tutor, Christian is able to be directive and encourages growth while being patient and reassuring.

Recommendation for Edvi Limpieza Total, cleaning, painting, repair

Edgar, Annie, and Mateo have cleaned my large home for several years. They also repair walls and prepare and paint them, which they have just done for us. While working at patching and painting the walls, Edgar also cleaned my large glass patio covering. He brought a plank that he stretched across the support beams and balanced on that so he wouldn’t break the glass. He had steel wool wrapped around a broom to gently scrub the accumulation of years of dirt off the windows. On the inside, he wiped every pane of glass with a rag to remove the dust that had accumulated there. While he was cleaning the glass, Mateo and Anna were busy finishing the walls in the lower part of the patio and then cleaning up any paint that had dripped on the floor, windows, and door, leaving the patio painted and cleaned.

We especially appreciate their attention to detail and the quiet manner in which they work as a team (except for the vacuum cleaners.) We agree on an exact time for them and they arrive promptly. They unload their supplies – soaps, waxes, cleansers, polishes, brooms, bucket, vacuum cleaners, rags – everything they need for their job. Within moments, they begin work and clean in the order we request, doing the room we need first – first, etc.

When they have finished, Edgar presents the factura and payment is made. If we have a small repair job that needs to be done, Edgar can do it. We can let them in in the morning and return to a clean house in the afternoon. Nothing is ever missing or broken. They are totally trustworthy. Mateo speaks some English.

Don’t hesitate to contact them for your cleaning needs. WhatsApp is the best way to reach them.

Recommendation for Adrian Puli, transportation, translator and handyman

My husband and I wanted to celebrate our anniversary with 4 of our friends! We called Adrian to pick us up at our individual homes and take us all together to our favorite restaurant. Adrian’s new SUV is so luxurious and comfortable with air conditioning and heating it was just like flying first class.

We had arranged to call Adrian when we were finished in order for him to take us home. Unlike taxis, Adrian took each of us to our homes and we were able to continue our festivities together all of the way home.

Adrian is extremely punctual and totally reliable. We have used Adrian as our translator when we go to our lawyer or doctors and he cares for us like our own son. If you need to go to the airport in Guayaquil, or any other town, Adrian’s new SUV is such a delightful and rummy ride I would recommend it to anyone who is tired of squeezing into the back of a taxi.

If you need a ride or a facilitator for translation, Adrian is your man!

You will learn how to use ceramic cutting tools, mosaic composition, and grouting. Your garden, patio, or home will be alive with vibrant colors and patterns!

Covid strikes again. We are ready. Last minute change.

Unfortunately, two members of Trio La Comarca have tested positive to Covid. We will not host them tomorrow and have rescheduled our first concert of the year with
