The dangers of Km 49

Esperanza Food Bank and Soup Kitchen has been supporting families affected by the crisis at the infamous KM 49 near Molleturo. On Thursday, we went to visit them to discuss their situation and get a firsthand look at the conditions of those affected by the landslides.

62-year-old Anna walked for almost two hours over the mountain peaks to see us. And she was one of the younger ones. Two people have already died falling from the treacherous path that those from the community of Cabos must use to get over the landslide. Eight more have been injured. Twice a week people from the community come to get food and assistance. They have no income. They all work in agriculture and now they are unable to get their vegetables and milk to the markets in Cuenca which sustain them.

Their situation is desperate as governments squabble over who will get the bulk of the millions they have allocated to the project. In the meantime, Anna and her neighbors risk their lives to get food with no assistance. They are grateful that Hogar de Esperanza has been with them and supporting them every week through this crisis.
