Air flights

Just wondering if anyone knows what is happening with the flights that were talked about between Cuenca and Guayaquil Airport? Now would be a great time since the main road of travel is closed.

Expats overcharged

Hi all,

I’ve been noticing many ads in different media resources and I just would like to let you know that some of the products and services offered are highly overpriced.

The other day I saw an ad in a gringo page about a XXX product. I contacted the person who was offering it and he gave me a quotation of $140. I thought it was a bit too much and by the way, I am a Cuencana, so, I told him it was too much. He said, well everyone pays. Not me.

I contacted another person who does not advertise in any gringo page and she made the same item for $48.

So, my advice is just shop around. Don’t just pay.

Amazon Prime

Never lose or forget your password for Amazon login. There is a whole new safety measure where I had to “jump through hoops” to prove I was not a hacker.
My username, my personal address, my integrity and my mind were all at stake. There are puzzles that I defy anyone to try to figure out the first time, just to be able to change the password. I was required to play a few visual and/or auditory puzzle games before Amazon was sure that I had spent enough money in the last 10 years to put Beso into space. These were the dumbest visual games imaginable. I finally unearthed a phone number and got someone on the line to help. Support had me hold while he checked my information. I shut all the tabs and started from scratch. After a fairly long interrogative consultation where I had to prove that I was me, he took me off hold and walked me through sign on. I was smart enough to get 6 puzzle questions correct. The Amazon website decided that I was safe enough to be allowed to make a new password. I finally got in.

Take Anonymous Posters With A Grain Of Salt – Part 2

On Friday, Nov.19, there was a post from Teresa Durrant entitled, “Take Anonymous Posters With A Grain Of Salt”. A woman obviously fed up with the rude, crude, nasty, mean spirited, obnoxious comments from gringos who feel it is their right to insult and defecate on the people who use this site to post helpful information to the expat community. I applaud Teresa Durrant for her bravery and honesty in bringing this issue to light.

Real Stories from Hogar – Reuniting

She escaped from Colombia a long time ago with her daughter, Soraida. Here in Cuenca, Anna got into a relationship with a local taxi driver and had a son, Juan Luis. The relationship did not last long, and Anna moved and lived on her own with her daughter. However, Soraida had significant physical and emotional challenges relating to her environment. Soraida and her mother received no assistance from her ex-partner and has no other family.

During the crisis, Soraida’s situation became critical, and her case was brought to us by the Municipality. We developed a plan whereby she would be admitted to hospital for three months and then she would come and live at the foundation as we monitored treatment. It would mean complete isolation from her family and then a slow integration as she became stabilized.

Over the past few months, we have been working on family re-integration. Her half-brother stays with his father during the week as his father supports him with his studies and he stays with his mother on the weekends. Soraida has been staying with them on the weekends and is now up to four days a week with her mother and brother and three days at the foundation. We have helped her mother move to a more suitable location and provided furniture so this family re-unification can happen.

Foundation Hogar de Esperanza takes a holistic approach to solving problems. Anna works part-time and we support her with food and medications as she works on creating a stable home environment for her children. Soriada is now happy again. We have also been working with governmental agencies to legalize her status in Ecuador. To support our work in re-uniting families, you can do so at: https://www.givingway.com/donate/fundacion-hogar-de-esperanza

Dear Friend of Mujeres con Ėxito,

As the holidays rapidly approach, we continue to work to meet the needs of the women and children we serve.

Every year we learn new things about the culture of our adopted country. Did you know that children in Ecuador receive only one gift for Christmas? And only if their families are able. Such a striking difference from the materialism of the US at holiday time! Our goal this year is to honor that tradition and help the women in our program provide a wonderful Christmas.

Cuenca Car Share wishes you a Happy Thanksgiving

For our friends who will be celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday this week, we wish you a day filled with blessings and thanks giving. We are grateful for your support and give thanks for you.

Plan ahead for your 2022 travel and book with me long before your travel date. Since the road to Guayaquil via Molletura has become more and more dangerous and travel may be restricted for a long time, you should give yourself lots of extra time to travel to the coast and take one of the alternate routes – no matter why you are going (or returning.) An extra night in a hotel somewhere could make the difference between arriving at the airport on time or missing your flight. If you don’t know which route to take, ask me,

I have added additional vehicles to our fleet and invite you to contact me for details for your January 2022 bookings. (December is fully booked already). They are brand-new or late model vehicles and will also carry our satisfaction guarantee, reduced prices for long term rentals, and at times will have free kilometers. These are things you don’t get with the big car rental companies, including delivery to your location and pick up when you are through with the rental.

If you have a car that is just sitting around gathering dust and running up bills with no income, perhaps you would like to contract it out to Cuenca Car Share and gain some revenue from it. Contact me.

Call, email, or go to our website Cuencacarshare.com to set up your appointment now.

All about leashes

Who knew there was so much to say about leashes? Do I have to tell you every dog needs one? I’ve been shocked actually at how many households don’t have leashes. They depend on their dog staying close when out for a walk.

But then, how to choose just one? There are 4 ft leashes, 6 ft leashes, single layer, double layer, retractable, rope-style, flat style, with padded handles, with double-handles, no doubt more options.

So here goes: 4 ft leashes are best when you’ll be sharing the path or the sidewalk. They are also best if you don’t have the strength you used to have

Recommendation for Martha Pulla, Spanish teacher

Recommendation for Martha Pulla, Spanish teacher for many years. Martha is teaching Basic Spanish at the art center in town. Recommendation for Leo Loza, driver / assistant; driving, handyman

Leo is an ex-taxi driver who knows Cuenca and surrounds very well. He will be your personal driver anywhere you want to go; he does pick up and drop to Guayaquil or Loja. Leo is also a great helper; through the last few years of coping with an illness, I don’t know what I would have done without him. He is an adviser, if you want it; he can get your shopping; do gardening with great help from his lovely wife, Margui; he has made wooden gates for me, helped me pack to move, dealt with plumbing disasters and more. He speaks English very well having lived and worked in USA; he is prompt and best of all, he is totally honest. I can’t recommend Leo too highly. I would add his lovely very smart wife, Margui, who often helps, but is also a skilled seamstress – does repairs and makes clothes to your specification. A great couple and a great find.

Recommendation for Hosteria El Barranco, hotel/resort

We spent a few days at the Hosteria El Barranco with friends and we couldn’t have been treated better. They picked us up in Cuenca and returned us at the end of the trip. They were accommodating in every respect, recommended restaurants and things to do. Although the rooms are a bit rustic, you don’t spend much time in the rooms. Lovely balconies to enjoy the view. One of the best things is the pool. It is heated and big and most enjoyable. Hosteria is very close to the river and there are nice easy walks to take through the area. But Luis will take you wherever you want to go. Give it a try.

Recommendation for Edvi Limpieza Total, cleaning service

We wanted our home to be neat and tidy for the arrival of a friend from Canada, so we called Edvi Limpieza Total. Edgar arrived at the appointed time with his crew. They divided the work and cleaned the house from top to bottom. They bring their own equipment and rags as well as cleaning liquids. I love not having to go out and purchase all the housecleaning essentials. 3 people came and worked swiftly through the house, leaving each room as well as the patios front and back in impeccable conditions. Text them for your cleaning today. Thanksgiving is here and Christmas is just next month. They have extension ladders to clean upstairs windows, too.
