There are only 4 shopping days left…

…but this is still time to visit the Cuenca Soup Kitchen Angel Tree and make the wishes of the children we feed come true.

The link is:

There are only a few wishes left to grant. Some wishes are specific like a princess costume for a six-year-old girl or a pair of size 37 shoes for a 13-year-old boy.

Some wishes are more general like the 17 children who wished for nothing more than a soccer ball.

If you would like to grant a small wish for one of these children please go to:

If you would rather not do the shopping yourself, we will do it for you – just choose the cash option.

Please deliver all gifts by Friday. Directions are on the link.

So many of you have taken the children of the Cuenca Soup Kitchen under your wings. Thank you!

Heiroom tomatoes and okra, greenhouse garden alert

Our tomato seedlings are growing rapidly now with the increasingly sunny days…our greenhouse temperatures peak well past 100 degrees Fahrenheit on a sunny day, so sugar levels should be high. Seeds and seedlings for sale, and later – when fruit begins harvesting – we will sell our tomatoes and our okra at a weekly market in Cuenca. For those that want to try growing their own organic heirloom tomatoes, our varieties, especially opalka, would do well on a sunny terrace or deck.

Probably only 2-3 weeks are left before the plants outgrow their pots; ready for transplanting into larger containers any time. Contact us by email or WhatsApp (messages only please, no phone calls…we have poor reception in the campo)
For those interested in visiting our garden center and eco resort, we are open daily for visitors…free seedlings or produce for those who make the trip, just 20 minutes by car from Cuenca.

Cuenca Firewood: Spring promotion

Celebrating the beginning of our 7th season as the premiere producer of firewood for the house, outdoor firepit, and fruit wood for smoking and barbecue, we offer our full line of premium woods, all seasoned and hand split. Our fruitwood is available seasoned or green, as some prefer green wood for smoking.

Firewood types include eucalyptus, pine, cypress and “cota” (our first venture into local hardwoods, this one rather similar to walnut); also fireplace grade cherry.

Our smoking/barbecue woods include apple (branchwood and split trunk wood) and cherry (small and large chunks of split trunk wood). We have been the exclusive provider of cherry wood to Cuchi Suco, the top barbecue restaurant in Cuenca. Roberto Mora, owner of this restaurant and El Mercado, tested out product against all others and chose us.

Wine of the day: Gerard Bertand Cote des Roses 2019

Origin: South of France
Grapes: Grenache / Syrah / Cinsault
Wine Maker’s Notes:
Cote des Roses celebrates the Mediterranean lifestyle. The Languedoc appellation stretches along the Mediterranean coast. The soils are highly varied, mainly with hard limestone and schist, but also gravel transported by the rivers of the Languedoc region. The bottle is original with its base in the shape of a rose, created by a young designer from the Ecole Boulle. A wine to be given in the same way you would offer a bunch of roses!

Wine Grower’s Notes:

The various grape varieties are harvested separately when each of them is just at the right ripeness level. The winemaking process is managed to respect the specific characteristics of the grape varieties and the qualities of the soil. The grapes are harvested by machine with a built-in sorting system. The grapes are de-stemmed, cooled down to 8°C and transferred to the press to extract the rosé wine must. Particular attention is paid to the pressing to ensure that only the first, highest-quality juice is kept. The juice is then left to settle according to the precise aromatic profile that is being targeted. Fermentation lasts between 15 and over 30 days, depending on the degree of clarification and the temperature. Finally, after light fining, the wine is bottled quite early to preserve the fresh, fruity character of the wines.

Tasting Notes:

The robe shows a soft, pale, brilliant pink with bluish tints developing over time towards more orangey nuances. The bouquet releases aromas of summer fruits, cassis and redcurrant. Floral notes of rose along with hints of grapefruit complete the picture. On taste, the finish is fresh, offering notes of candy. On the palate the impression is fresh and full, with great aromatic persistence and balance.

This Languedoc is ideal at 10°C as an aperitif or with shellfish and subtly spiced dishes.

Recommendation for Carlos Geovanny, carpenter

I had been looking for a round mirror to fill a spot in my home. I found several plain ones, but I wanted one with character. I found one that I fell in love with at a high-end furniture store but it was much more than I wanted to pay. I took a photo and started searching for a carpenter to make it for me. Walking down 12 de Abril (near the Los Nogales center where Juan Marcet is) I found Carlos working away in a little shop. I showed him the photo of the mirror and gave him my dimensions, we agreed on a price and I walked away with my fingers crossed that all would come out the way I had envisioned. When I picked it up, it was exactly what I wanted, I could not be happier!

Carols and his brother do fantastic work, are the nicest guys and finished exactly when they promised.

Note: they don’t speak English – but all is good with Google translate!
Mirror is much larger than it looks in the photo (35” in diameter)

Recommendation for Christian Ordonez – painter, painting

I highly recommend Christian for painting your home. He uses Sherwin Williams paint, stops by for a free estimate and you pick your colors. He set up our appointment for the next day. We painted our bedroom and highlighted our skylight. Prices were reasonable and he was flawless. He removed all the furniture and covered everything else. Then, he put everything back. He’s very talented. If you want to freshen something up for the holidays, you won’t be sorry that you chose Christian. He also does general construction for your further needs.

Gobble or oink? Ask King Smokehouse for the answer

Ham or Turkey – what to choose. Felix, has you covered either way. This is the last week to order one of his fabulous Turkey options or to order his special boneless smoked ham, lovingly basted to perfection with his secret glaze. The ham is a bit over a kilo of pure hammy goodness and is ready to heat and eat or enjoy at room temp. This is a great option for sandwiches, starters or as the star of your table. The cost for the ham is only $14 for ham scrumptiousness. Whole or sliced – you choose. At this great price one of each?

Turkey is still available to order thru the end of the week. You have several options:
All uncooked turkeys are marinated in Felix’s special marinade and prepped for your oven. Turkey ordered ready to eat are brought to you toasty and ready to enjoy. Saturday Salon: Pre-Colonial Cuenca, extra day at idiomART

We had such a huge response to last week’s Saturday Salon about Pre-Colonial Cuenca, that we have added an extra date so nobody is left out!

In this Salon you will learn what Cuenca was like before the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores. You will learn about the city of Tomebamba and the aboriginal tribes of the Cañari and the Inca civilization, the differences between the two, their art, mythology, world vision, and other aspects that configure the origins of Cuenca.

There is also an optional visit to the Museum of Culturas Aborigenes guided and translated by Berenice Cardenas and the director of the Museum. Here, you will have the chance to see artifacts that will help you better understand pre-columbian Cuenca.

Berenice Cárdenas is from Cuenca, Ecuador and has her master’s degree in Art History from the University of Chile. She is an independent art historian, researcher, lecturer, teacher, translator and writer with interests in Latin American Colonial Art, Baroque Iconography, Female Iconography in the Renaissance period and handicrafts in the Latin American Colonial Period.

The salon is at 10:30 AM. It costs $10
The museum tour is at 2 PM and costs $8 and includes entrance into the museum.

Reservations are required as we have limited seating.
Please contact Sarah HB to reserve your seat by emailing:

A Brazilian masterpiece

La Guarida projects on the big-screen:

Tropa de Elite [Elite Squad]
a film by José Padilha
in Portuguese with English and Spanish subtitles.

Wednesday, November 17th, at 6:45 PM
Doors open at 5:45 PM
Reservations with dinner required
Tel. 099 806 8071

What’s going on in all the prisons in Ecuador is horrendous. This is the terrible reality of most prisons in Latin America. ‘Tropa de Elite,’ attempts to show how these problems are created. An incredible Brazilian film that highlights the actual security situation of Rio de Janeiro. Not enough resources from the government, a corrupt military, the vast political power of illicit bands and many other factors that make a dangerous cocktail of criminality and thus feeding the grave problem which afflicts all jails in South America. This film is simply a Latin American wonder.

We are located in Mariscal Lamar and Luis Pauta. Take the Tranvia and get off La Cuadra station.

November 17th, from 5:45 to 9:45 PM, Free, Mariscal Lamar and Luis Pauta, Cuenca.
