Dog for adoption

Hello dear expats, There’s a little dog called Rafael who needs to be adopted! He is medium-size, mixed golden retriever and 11-months old. He used to have owners but they bought two baby huskies and threw him out of the house. He has been in a temporary home but, the time there is ended. He has no home,

He is very friendly, affectionate, smart; loves to play with other dogs and children.
Please give another chance to Rafael.

I appreciate If anyone would like to adopt him.
I can transport him to any place here in Cuenca.

Real stories from the Hogar – 3 out of 10?

Here at Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope) every day we have many who come to us looking for help. This past week was particularly challenging with some extremely difficult cases. It is estimated that 3 out of 10 Ecuadorians do not have enough income to buy food. Our foodbank and soup kitchen tries to meet the needs of those most vulnerable. Often we think just about food, but when there is such extreme poverty, it has a profound effect on the children and they often go without the basics. We try our best to pay special attention to the needs of the children.

Golden retriever (mix) puppies available for adoption

We have three absolutely adorable, 9-week-old female golden retriever (mix) pups that are available for adoption. Suka, Dora and Mocha have been dewormed and have received their first vaccinations. Mocha will be a bit bigger than her sisters and appears to have a different father.

These pups were rescued recently along with their mother because the owners “didn’t want them anymore” and wanted to “get rid of them”. They were terribly neglected and left to fend for themselves. They are currently being fostered in Paute.

Please contact me if you’re interested in these beautiful babies.

Dear Friends of Mujeres con Ėxito

As the holidays rapidly approach, we continue to work to meet the needs of the women and children we serve.

Every year we learn new things about the culture of our adopted country. Did you know that children in Ecuador receive only one gift for Christmas? And only if their families are able. Such a striking difference from the materialism of the US at holiday time. Our goal this year is to honor that tradition and help the women in our program provide a wonderful Christmas.

Our school supplies drive was an overwhelming success, but we must return to you, our dear friends and supporters, to ensure the children in our program have a magical Christmas.

Looking for a translator/interpreter? Are you struggling with internet?

I am Maria Penafiel, a law student. A little background about myself: I am 24-years old, and I speak fluent English, along with that, I have also studied German and, as of now, I am studying Italian. I love diversity which is why I love to travel. I have been to Italy, the US, and also have traveled within Ecuador. I’ve been to the Galapagos, the Amazon, Chimborazo, Quito and Banos de Ambato. My beautiful country is full of diversity and I am excited for you to get to experience it. I am already planning my upcoming trip. I am currently working in a local law firm while working on my thesis (Senior project as you might know it), so I’m almost ready to get my law degree.

I have many different work experiences such as labor law, family, company incorporation, civil and criminal issues, and mediation. I have experience in translating legal or non-legal documents. Therefore, I can assist or advise and translate papers that you need to do at the notary’s office, but my experience is not limited to law; if you have any day-to-day errands and the language barrier is an issue, I can help you with it.

I can help you with real estate, leaving the country, buying or renting apartments, houses, vehicles. Also, I know you deserve to get the service that you have paid for, therefore, I can help you communicate with any company and/or person that you might need. I am not a health insurance agent and do not represent any company but speak English fluently. If your agent is not helpful, I can advocate on your behalf to get the health care benefits you deserve.

I do not solve Internet problems, but I can help you deal with the Internet provider to report slow Internet or Internet cuts. I can help you with any difficulty you may have with service bills, telephone plans, electricity or water bills, coordination between hospitals and health insurance plans, etc. Don’t miss those special promotions. As you might know, Internet/cable services and many more, have special sales when you ask for it. I can help you look for a cheaper alternative that is better suited for you. So don’t be shy. I can intermediate as an interpreter to get the best deal for you. If you need to shop or go out on the town and need a translator, I can help you to break the language barrier.

I charge $9.50 an hour, but if you need more than two hours you can get a discount. If we need to go in person to an office and you need transportation we can go in my car, it will be an extra (but usually it is minimal). Rest assured that we have all the security measures in place, we protect you and ourselves. I’m happy to help you in any way I can.

I can come for you or we can meet at a specific place in the city. Let’s get you the best “Cuencana” experience.

Let me be your translator and advocate, I want to be able to help you so you can communicate.

Big dogs: we have you covered

You guys, we have it for you, whatever you need. I know, it’s almost as if big dogs don’t exist in Cuenca. Cuenca suppliers just haven’t been thinking about you. But we are focused on you.

We have toys you can really chomp on and share with buddies (including your human). Toys that squeak. Toys that don’t break when you bring them home from the store.

We have all-meat bully sticks. I knew you’d like to hear that.

We have beds made just for you, with firm mattresses and a bolster to lay your head on, and with fitted covers — easy to wash (‘cuz, guys, you can get a little smelly after a while).

We have leashes and harnesses (in two models) and head halters (in two models) to help your humans enjoy your walks as much as you do. Maybe you’ll get out more. Like that?

We have diapers for you senior fellows, so you don’t embarrass yourselves.

And, we have more stuff coming in next week.

Put us on your Christmas calendar. We will be having open houses every Saturday in December.

Call or text for the address in El Vergel.

Recommendation for Isabel Mosquera, visa facilitator

We would like to highly recommend Isabel Mosquera for obtaining your visa or renewing it. We had a difficult situation that was very time sensitive. Isabel went above and beyond to make sure we received our visas in time. We were able to give her “Power of Attorney” so we wouldn’t have to make the trips to Azogues, which is a huge relief for me because I have MS and am not yet comfortable being out in public areas. She is very professional and very knowledgeable. I believe she has been doing this for over 8 years. What an excellent experience. Thank you Isabel,

Recommendation for Fredy Ordóñez, personalized Spanish lessons

If you would like some personalized tutoring to help you improve your Spanish pronunciation, grammar, conversational skills, get some cultural lessons about Ecuador, etc., then I highly recommend Mr. Fredy Ordóñez.

Fredy started his studies in Tourism in 2006 and then changed his major to Spanish Language and Literature in 2008. He’s currently pursuing his Masters in Tourism. He has worked as a Spanish teacher for over 12 years, both in Spanish language schools and other academic institutions. Currently, he is self-employed and tries to combine both education and culture, working in private classes and arranging cultural trips around Ecuador.

Fredy is a well-trained teacher with a deep understanding of his native tongue, as well as being fluent in English. I’m finding his lessons to be lots of fun, as he teaches me how to pronounce Spanish like a native speaker, answers my many questions, gives me short cultural lessons about Cuenca and the surrounding areas, helps me to understand the history and culture of the indigenous peoples of Ecuador (along with local politics), and just generally makes me feel more comfortable using Spanish. I love that he mostly speaks Spanish during our lessons so I have practice listening, and he has me read aloud to work on fluency and pronunciation. He’s extremely personable and knowledgeable, a joy to be around.

Recommendation for Matthew’s Bagels Store, panaderia and deli

Got gastritis? You might want to go to Matthew’s and ask for their sour dough bread. It doesn’t taste like the sour dough bread we bought in San Francisco. This bread uses lactobacillus bacteria to make their dough which is a probiotic bacteria that promotes stomach health. He uses another bacteria which gives the bread a more natural taste. Before I bought my first loaf, I had eaten another sour dough bread made by the local community. The bacteria they use is very strong and I was sore and achy for the next two days. I bought Matthew’s bread and by the end of the day, my stomach, aches and pains were all back to normal. I’ve been eating it ever since, and it has really helped heal my stomach. It’s like taking medication without taking it.

I eat the white bread, but they offer other flavors such as carrot and ginger, beet root, rye, cereal, and eggplant. Of course they offer other goodies, too. So even if you don’t have gastritis, visit Matthew’s and try their sour dough bread to take care of your stomach. The staff is friendly and very accommodating and ready to help you with your needs.

Third Week of November at La Guarida: Brunch this whole week from Tuesday through Saturday from 9 AM to 1 PM. Don’t forget to visit our art gallery. We celebrate the works of Eduardo Segovia, one of Cuenca’s most iconic figures.

Our film choices this week are:

Wednesday, November 17th, at 6:45 PM: Tropa de Elite

What’s going on in all the prisons in Ecuador is horrendous. This is the terrible reality of most prisons in Latin America. ‘Tropa de Elite,’ attempts to show how many of these problems are created. An incredible Brazilian film that highlights the actual security situation of Rio de Janeiro. Not enough resources from the government, a corrupt military, the political power of illicit bands and many other factors that make a dangerous cocktail of criminality and thus feeding the grave problem which afflicts all jails in Ecuador. A Latin American masterpiece.

And the exciting news: Our 2022 calendars. featuring the winners of our photo contest, will be available for sale at the event. The money we raise will help us get out the vote in 2022!

If you are not in Cuenca and want to host an event or have information about calendars, contact us at

For updates and further information about calendar sales, see our Facebook page at Democrats Abroad Ecuador.

The Free & Fun Language Exchange on Zoom – All Levels Welcome

Please join an enthusiastic group of native Spanish and English speakers as we converse in each other’s language in an encouraging and supportive environment. After years of meeting in person, we are now continuing with Zoom.

All levels of ability are welcome, so don’t be shy–even if you don’t speak a word of the language you want to learn, you will be helped by those that do.

To facilitate conversation, we often have fun with tongue twisters, riddles, slang, crossword puzzles, etc. Or, we just simply converse on various subjects. Anything to practice speaking.

The Zoom meeting starts promptly at 6 PM every Monday, and we end at 7 PM.

No need to confirm your attendance; just show up and enjoy . . . and learn.

Dao Yin Yoga and Qi Gong classes

Start the day with more energy and a positive mindset with a morning practice.

Or calm down and get yourself very relaxed for a good night’s sleep with our evening practice.

We offer classes that are a mix of Dao Yin and Yoga. Dao Yin is an old Chinese practice where Qi Gong and Tai Chi originates from. It works by releasing tensions and restrictions both in our body and mind – and thereby opening us up to deeper connections and a stronger flow of Qi – Life Force. Every Class will have a different theme, taking you deeper into the practice of Qi Gong – for example about our Inner Three Treasures, Yin & Yang or the Five Elements.

The class is a complement to Qi Gong, and the difference from Qi gong will be more and deeper stretches as well as practices on the floor.

See our fb page for a full Qi Gong Schedule, we have beginner classes Monday to Friday 10 – 11 AM, and a complimentary intro Monday mornings 9 – 9:45 AM.

It is a practice with very flowing and easy movements, making it available for most people – you do not need to be an acrobat to join …

Contact us if you have any questions.

All the best!
