Attempting a 4×4 import using various courier services

It’s great Ecuador removed the $42 tariff on import Category B, items less than $400 and weighing less than 4kg, AKA 4×4. But try creating an order of multiple items that complies from the courier’s perspective, which is an order must arrive to them in a single package. When was the last time your Amazon order of multiple items was shipped in a single package? Here’s my experience:

Clickbox: Advertises their rate is $40 for 4×4. But the fine print they don’t talk about is a package consolidation fee of $30, bringing the rate up to their per pound fee. They do order management via email and your total is unknown until you pick it up or have it delivered. Clickbox used to provide excellent service when they started. With my last order last week, they didn’t even bother to contact me that it was in. I just showed up in their office because WhatsApp texts and emails, politely composed in Spanish, went unanswered.

Announcement of the passing of Lorlotte Jarvis

Lorlotte Jarvis, known by many as Lotte, passed away on the morning of November 9, following a battle with cancer. For the last few weeks, she had been receiving medical care in Toronto where her daughter Ruth, her grandchildren, and her lifelong friend Ingrid, live.

She was 87 years old and was going about her business until as recently as a few months ago.

Lorlotte was an eye witness to Hitler’s invasion of Austria, where she lived on her grandparents’ farm. She was the daughter of a church pastor who refused to swear allegiance to Hitler. Her colorful life history is available on Amazon, titled “Angels to the Rescue.”

She lived life her way, and with energy and enthusiasm.

Rest in peace, Lotte. We will remember you.

Experienced architect

I hold a master’s degree in architecture and I have been working as an architect for the past 7 years. Over the years, I have designed buildings, interiors, landscapes, and furniture for clients based in the US, Europe, and Asia. I deliver top-notch designs in an array of styles from classic to modern or post-modern. I specifically address American, Mediterranean, European, or Oriental needs as my career has been all about designing harmonious spaces according to clients’ needs and the functionality they want.

I present all plans and designs with meticulously detailed, realistic, and visually appealing 3D renderings in order to give you a realistic idea of your new house, office, or space before you start knocking down walls or begin construction. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

When it comes to construction, I work with a renown architectural firm in Cuenca. They bring in over 5 decades of experience in construction and they deal with all the bureaucracy.

Italian beef at its best – Osso Buco at Joes’ Secret Garden

Dine-in this Saturday; we are open. Reservations required.
Delivery or pick up … Sunday. Order In advance.

If you like Italian cuisine and you like beef, this is the dinner for you. Tender beef shanks are popular in many European cuisines, but it’s in Osso Buco, the northern Italian classic, that they can be at their most heavenly. And Joes’ Secret Garden brings them to Cuenca … braised in a sophisticated and subtle tomato and vegetable sauce, then finished with a bright gremolata (fresh parsley, lemon zest, and garlic), But few dishes are more seductive. Like most braises, they require slow, gentle cooking.

Artisan bread at Tienda Nectar

We now have a variety of artisan bread from the ovens of Kelbert and family.

Dinner in a special place

We are and we are not a new place. We are continuously improving our services and now we open for dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.

A couple of years back, La Guarida was serving really delicious fast food. Little by little, we have updated our menu to include things that we simply couldn’t get anywhere else, such as, our juicy and delicious lamb burger or our new special – a beautiful, aromatic, Asian-inspired broth with shrimp and pork meatballs. We are so proud of our key lime pie and the apple pie is to die for.

We try to understand this changing world and are continuously searching for sustainable and delicious products. We don’t forget about our plant-based and fungi friends and we simply believe that you must try our creamy pear barley with sautéed mushrooms -to us that dish spells vegan dreams. Our Avocado Rainbow is humble, colorful and full of flavors. Our vegan chocolate mousse is the Queen of our desserts.

Come check out, what La Guarida is all about. A patron once called us – the best hidden jewel in Cuenca. We surely are ready to shine for all of you. Come on over.

We now open Friday and Saturday for dinner. Reservations are advised but not required.

Saturday Morning Language Exchange

Dear Community,

We kindly invite you to join our language exchange group Spanish-English/English-Spanish.

The sessions are aimed at people willing to improve their conversational skills putting them into practice in a realistic environment and with native speakers. They are guided by a bilingual facilitator (a teacher with extensive experience in the field) who proposes the activities and conversation topics.

It involves several people whose native language is English and several people whose native language is Spanish. We get together so that the former can practice Spanish and the latter can practice English.

Apart from the language learning, the sessions bring an excellent opportunity to meet and interrelate with local people while engaging in the city’s cultural activities.

Therefore, this language exchange complements formal language learning. It mainly serves for putting oral language skills into practice. Additionally, it constitutes a good opportunity to experience and gain an insight into aspects of Ecuadorian culture and Cuenca local life.

November 13th, from 11 AM to 12:30 PM, Voluntary contribution from $2, Otorongo Lounge, Plaza del Otorongo y Avenida 3 de Noviembre, Cuenca.

Joes’ Secret Garden this week!

Dine-In … Saturday, Nov. 13th, join the fun our beautiful restaurant.
Take Out … Sunday, Nov. 14th … for pick up or delivery.

Italian style tender beef – Osso Buco! Dinner, slow cooked with fresh vegetables and gravy for hours … then served on creamy parmesan polenta … or opt for our popular Herb Garlic and Rosemary Roasted Chicken or a classic Egg Plant Parmesan Lasagna, finishing dinner with a refreshing fresh Mango Mousse, … that’s what’s cooking at Joes’ this week.

What our customers have to say and posted on Trip Advisor:

“Joe’s Secret Garden is a private home with a beautiful garden in the back yard. They serve dinner for up to 100 people and they’re known for their Southern fried chicken which they serve monthly. Except for special holidays, they usually only serve dinners on Saturday evenings and it’s a warm and gracious place for new people to meet fellow expats, although their clientele isn’t exclusively geared to expats.

Ken and KP, the current owners, prepared Osso Buco for the main course tonight along with a sweet and sour beet, avocado and red onion salad, fresh bread still warm from the oven, mashed potatoes with gravy and a key lime pie for dessert. The Osso Buco was perfectly prepared and everyone at our table commented on the overall quality of the meal. The meat was fall off the bone tender and the gravy was very well seasoned. It was a delicious meal.

I go to Joe’s Secret Garden regularly. It’s not often that I miss a week. The food is consistently good and the atmosphere is warm and congenial. I highly recommend it to anyone visiting Cuenca or anyone living here that hasn’t tried Joe’s before”
