5% exit tax?

Hi Everyone,

I am planning to withdraw a CD from my bank here in Ecuador. Has anyone heard any news on the removal of the 5% exit tax?

Authentication of documents in Canada?

I will be needing a legalized certificate of marriage to obtain my Ecuador cedula. I have hired a facilitator but is unable to answer the following question:

Will the consulate in Ottawa accept for legalization a marriage certificate that is authenticated by my province rather than from foreign affairs?

I tried emailing and calling the consulate many times and they do not reply to mail or return calls.

Foreign affairs has a 35 business day processing time and the province is only 5 days.

Anyone have experience with this?

October 26, 27 meetings?

Good morning. I read the many announcements about the meeting that was to share a “new” law (that you may never have heard of), requiring residents of Ecuador to disclose their world-wide assets to the SRI. Unfortunately, I was out of province, and unable to attend. I’ve asked some attendees (including a local accountant), what this means to ordinary expats, but am still left with unanswered concerns.

I’d like to hear your conclusions. onehaistct@yahoo.ca

Help make a joyful Christmas at Mujeres Con Exito

Dear Friends of Mujeres con Ėxito,

As the holidays rapidly approach, we continue to work to meet the needs of the women and children we serve.

Every year we learn new things about the culture of our adopted country. Did you know that children in Ecuador receive only one gift for Christmas? And only if their families are able. Such a striking difference from the materialism of the US at holiday time! Our goal this year is to honor that tradition and help the women in our program provide a wonderful Christmas.

Our school supplies drive was an overwhelming success, but we must return to you, our dear friends and supporters, to ensure the children in our program have a magical Christmas.

Our mothers tell us they also need shoes and clothes for their children, so we will add those to the packages with the children’s presents. That adds up to $50 for each child. Considering we have 200 children (including babies and toddlers) that is a whopping $10,000!

Can you dig deep and help make Christmas a special day for these children of abused women? It is our tradition to give the children’s Christmas presents to their mothers, so they feel empowered by having a gift to give their children.

If you have pennies collecting in a jar, be sure and bring them to us with your donation. This is a tradition at Mujeres con Éxito.

Please take donations and pennies to Mujeres con Éxito at Balthazar de Calderon 226 y Miguel Velez Monday thru Friday from 9 AM – noon. If you have more than you can carry, we can also arrange for pick up. You can also send your donation by PayPal using mcbsusan@outlook.com or bring them to our Christmas Carols, Cupcakes and Coffee event on December 7th at 3 PM featuring David Z.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continued support of the children at Casa Maria Amor/Mujeres con Éxito. So many of our children have witnessed violence and experienced trauma. Your help will give them better memories and bring love into their lives this Christmas.

With love and best wishes for the holidays,

Susan and Diana

Born in the USA

Jake was loved by everyone. Jake was born in the USA. When still a baby, the young family along with Jake decided to return to Cuenca and with their small savings built a house. His father had trouble finding work. When Jake was 3-years old, they noticed something was not right. Jake was diagnosed with medulloblastoma. Without work or health insurance the father spent about $50,000 on operations and medications for Jake. Normally with proper intervention, children with this type of brain cancer have a 60-80% survival rate.

His father found a job making $400 per month but spends $330 per month on the remaining debt of $11,000 for Jake’s surgeries. That is not a lot left over for food and other expenses. Jake and his family were on our Christmas list for children with cancer. Unfortunately, Jake died in his mother’s arms a few weeks ago. The family asked us if we could just help them with a headstone for their beloved son for Christmas. Everyone misses Jake so much.

Jake is just one of 100 children on our list. Some of these will not see another Christmas. We want to make this Christmas special for every one of them, but we cannot do it without your support. To support our Christmas program you can make a donation at: https://www.givingway.com/campaign/d9ee576 You can also visit us to make your donation in person at Juan Montalvo and Mariscal Sucre. Thank you for supporting children facing catastrophic illness.

Cat scratchers and towers

Cats are curious, fearless animals and they love to play. Life locked up at home can be boring for them without games or surprises. Remember that they need to meet their needs and scratching is one of their basic instincts, to file their nails, as a form of play, for anxiety or insecurity or to defend their territory. Many times we get angry because our cat has scratched the sofa or the curtains, but we should ask ourselves, are we giving it any alternative?

Scratchers for cats are a good gift for them, it helps them to stay active and keep their nails in good condition. Plus, it’s yours, yours alone. Something that cats love.

– 5 reasons why your cat should use a scratching post:

1. To keep their nails healthy and strong.
2. To stay active and avoid health problems.
3. To play and release stress
4. To create shelter
5. For their curious instinct.

Constructed entirely of good wood, strong and stable solids, with strong sisal and high-quality carpet cloth.

I have different designs and models. Prices vary from each one.

I also manufacture scratchers based on your budget.
You will like it a lot.

Best place for craft beer and coffee in Cuenca

Come to The Hop Factory this Thursday and Friday from 1:30 to 7:30 PM, for some great craft beer. We do home deliveries on Thursday from 8 AM to noon.

We are on east side of Cuenca, Calle del Himno y Bandera Nacional. We have darts and chess boards available to play, as well as outdoor seating.

Our available beers are: Bourbon Barrel (11.5%) $4, IPA (6%) $3, Stout (6%) $3, American Amber Ale (6%) $3. We make a truly “old school” beer that is unfiltered and naturally carbonated.

Low cal/low carb beers: $3.
Our Rowdy Rabbit is an all-natural Light Blonde Ale that only has 84 calories and 5.8 carbohydrates but still has 4% abv. This slightly hazy beer is light in color/calories/carbohydrates but still has a Citrusy Tart flavor (15 IBU’s) that is created with not only our hops/grains but stands out because of our use of coriander.

Our Light Jamaica and Light Maracuya (Passionfruit) beers are even easier on your waistline. 72 calories, 4.9 carbohydrates, 3.5% abv. and they both go down like juice. These shandy-like beers ended up very popular with our taste testers (The Hop Family (c;).

We are also the only place you can get Black Honey and Café Dona Julita brand coffees. Black Honey is our coffee liqueur made in Vilcabamba. Makes a great White Russian (16% abv $15/750ml bottle).
NEW COFFEE PRICES The coffee we have available in both beans and ground. “Premium” is a medium-dark roast $4. 50/400g,
“Gourmet” is a medium/Columbian roast $5.50/400g and our “Honey” is a medium dark roast originally created just for our coffee liqueur $6.50/400G. Honey: we will need a week advance for the order so we can special order what you need.

Please have all orders in by Wednesday to ensure on-time delivery. $18 minimum for free delivery under $18 we add $2.

Recommendation for Leonor (Noshy) Pinos, homemade granola and pure honey

I’ve now bought excellent organic homemade granola from Noshy several times. The taste and texture are much better than those of commercial kinds I’ve tried, and I love the different items in the mix. It comes in 500 gram (17.6 oz.) packages, for $8, with free delivery for two packages. Or, half-size package at 250 grams (8.8 oz.) for $4.

I never even liked honey until I tried Noshy’s, made by bees feeding on wild flowers in private, non-commercialized hives in the Riobamba area. It’s organic and 100% pure. (No chemical preservatives, pesticides, or fungicides.) Sold in sanitized glass jars for $7/pound (16 oz.), with free delivery for 2 pounds. The taste and texture are like no honey I’d had before, and I’ve now gotten several jars.

Horseback riding this Saturday with San Joaquin Riding…

It’s always a new and exciting experience to ride horseback in the Andes, so let’s go on another great horseback ride this, Saturday, 13th Nov.

After a two month break, Christian is happy to say that he has acquired some new horses, and although some of the rides do require experienced only riders, this Saturday, Christian will take all levels of riding skills on a leisurely stroll through the evergreens and trails of Sam Joaquin.

There are a few minor changes to our usual schedule this weekend.
Make your way to our meeting point at the JEP Banco, San Joaquin by 9 AM.
This is where we will meet you and walk across the ride where the horses will be saddled and waiting.
All the taxi drivers will know where this bank is…

The ride will begin at 9:30 for approximately 2 and a half to 3 hours,
Lunch is around 12:30 PM and you will be served in a lovely family owned, licensed restaurant just up from the San Joaquin Golf Course.

Lunch is a la carte (and optional) and is not included in the price. Snacks are available. You can check out the menu on their facebook page:

When lunch is over, our private van will deliver you straight to your home so please provide your contact details and home address when you book, thanks!

On booking we will send you more information and tips for your ride…

Cost: $45 includes the ride and transport.

Wes returns to Tutto Matto Pizzeria, Nov 11, one night only

And, yes, Wes is fully vaccinated.

Wes will perform his “all new show” with a moneyback guarantee. Chef/owner Daniel will serve up his award-winning dishes.

Puppy Workshop — free — today

Thinking about getting a puppy? Let’s get ready. Come to my free workshop today at 2 PM. We’ll talk about choosing the right breed for your family, puppy-proofing the house, the critical importance of his/her first 16 weeks, the equally important business of socializing him/her, whether or not to get a crate, how to use pee pads, and so much more. You can meet other puppy owners and start talking about play-dates.

Bring your questions. It will be my pleasure to teach you what I know and get you off on the right foot. We’ll sit outside in a nice garden and talk. And you can also take a look at some helpful dog products I’ve brought in from the States.

I’m Heather Conley, certified in dog training and dog behavior by the prestigious Karen Pryor Academy. Before retiring to Cuenca in 2019, I owned and operated The Dog House NYC in Manhattan for 25 years. Now I live in El Vergel. Please email me or text me for the address.

(For this workshop, we’re talking about newborns up to 5 months. There are older puppies, I know. But we’ll talk about them another time.)
