Rain and more rain…?

I keep on looking at the weather forecast for Cuenca from afar. Does the sun ever come out? Is it like Seattle weather?

Taxi rip-offs or new law?

Sunday I took two taxis. The meters registered $2 each upon arrival at my destination. I gave each $5 and both gave me $2 change. When I said that was not correct, one responded “Gasolina.” Is there a new law adding $1 to taxi fares for gasoline?

Left my phone in Taxi… ugh

Homemade recipes to kill ants and other insects

I came across these natural and simple recipes to kill ants and other insects using Borax. I specifically want to kill teeny tiny little black sugar ants.

How to kill ants with Borax – A Deadly Ant Killer Recipe

Borax is not a quick fix that gets rid of ants immediately, but because of its slower workings, it is a more effective and long-term home remedy. Borax works by gradually killing the ants after they ingest it, and because most ants bring back the fruits of their labor to their colony to feed their larvae and their queen, this method of using borax will kill the ants and destroy the colony from the inside out.

Real stories from the Hogar – Helping the 2%

98% of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia go into remission within weeks of starting treatment. So far, Josue is not one of the lucky ones. Diagnosed at 5-years old, now 10, he still goes for weekly chemo treatments. He has relapses and spends a lot of time in hospital emergency departments, receiving blood transfusions and treatments.

He was a normal boy, loves soccer and even joined a soccer school. But, due to the expenses his family faces he had to quit soccer as they could no longer afford it. They struggle with having enough food and making sure Josue gets his medications. His frail health also prevents him from hanging out much with his friends. But he still has a dream of one day playing soccer again and for Christmas, he wants his own soccer ball. A symbol of hope and his determination to get better.

Josue is one of 100 children facing catastrophic illness that we will be making Christmas special for this year. You can join us in this effort by donating at: https://www.givingway.com/campaign/d9ee576

You can also contribute to our upcoming garage sale or donate in person at Foundation Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope). We are located at the corner of Juan Montalvo and Mariscal Sucre. Thank you for supporting children with cancer and other illnesses. You support can make a difference and give them inspiration and hope.

Clothing needed: You can help

Clothing Needed: You Can Help

The children in our program are thrilled with the clothing donations that they get through CSK. They don’t often get new clothing.

But fitting in at school (yes, all of the children in our program are required to attend school) can be tough with ill-fitting clothing. A few of them have requested clothing, shoes, and sneakers for Christmas.

You can make school and their futures better when you make their wishes come true!

Visit our Angel Tree at: https://www.cuencasoupkitchen.org/event

You can choose to purchase and deliver one of the listed gifts
You can choose to make a financial donation and we will purchase the gift for you – this is the best option to grant wishes from outside of Ecuador or if shopping is difficult for you.

Please drop off your gifts by November 15th so our elves will have plenty of time to sort, wrap, and distribute the gifts.

Questions? Email Barbara, at bcurry150@gmail.com with “Angel Tree” in the subject line.

Thank you for everything that you do,

Hogar De Esperanza’s “TugZ 4 DogZ”

As a dog owner, has this happened to you?

–You buy a cheap toy at Coral only to have your dog destroy it in 10 minutes
–You are lucky to find a sturdy rope toy at a Cuenca pet shop, but once it’s worn out (no toy is indestructible) you return to find it’s out of stock
–You spend big bucks to import dog toys from Amazon, only to discover your pooch isn’t interested

We are excited to announce a new project for our clients who attend our art workshop, weaving fleece strip tug toys made from blankets sold at Coral. We call it “TugZ 4 DogZ” and they now are for sale at the Expat Service Center for $6.

The workshop has become not only a place to gather socially, but unfortunately for too many it is also a safe place to spend a few hours outside the home. They would be excited to participate in making products that would generate income for Hogar.

An expat has donated the sales display and has made the initial inventory. Now all that is needed is a market.

Don’t have a dog? Buy a tug and drop it into the green donation basket and it will be donated to the rescue dogs at FAAN.

Want to donate blankets? We use the “una plaza” size, 150cm x 180cm, that reduces strip cutting to only the width. Come pay your bills and drop the blanket donation in the green basket.

Can we count on the expat community to be our market? If this proves successful, we are already thinking about expanding the product line to include rope knot toys.

Please provide feedback in the comments. Thank you!

Mary T. is not moving from Cuenca

Hello gringo community,

I have been hearing from some people that there are several different ideas going around that I am leaving Cuenca, or going back to the US. Someone had me going to live with my daughter in Texas–I do not have a daughter.

I am not leaving, as I have purchased a small plot of land to build a house in the country here.

I have been having a sale, so that may have confused some people; I was lightening my load a bit as I move from my house in town, which I still have under lease. I am planning to stay in Ecuador indefinitely.

Thank you all for supporting me and my sale, you will see me around for some time! Ecuador is my home.

I just wanted you all to know, and to set the record straight.

Thank you again,

Puppy Workshop – free — this Wednesday, November 10 at 2 PM

Thinking about getting a puppy? Let’s get ready. Come to my free workshop this Wednesday, November 10. We’ll talk about choosing the right breed for your family, puppy-proofing the house, the critical importance of his/her first 16 weeks, the equally important business of socializing him/her, whether or not to get a crate, how to use pee pads, and so much more. You can meet other puppy owners and start talking about play-dates.

Bring your questions. It will be my pleasure to teach you what I know and get you off on the right foot. We’ll sit outside in a nice garden and talk. And you can also take a look at some helpful dog products I’ve brought in from the States.

I’m Heather Conley, certified in dog training and dog behavior by the prestigious Karen Pryor Academy. Before retiring to Cuenca in 2019, I owned and operated The Dog House NYC in Manhattan for 25 years. Now I live in El Vergel. Please email me or text me for the address.

(For this workshop, we’re talking about newborns up to 5 months. There are older puppies, I know. But we’ll talk about them another time.)

I’m offering myself as a Spanish conversational partner

Hi fellow expats, my name is Alejandro Moreno, I’m a 25-year-old guy from Venezuela looking to work as a Spanish (Or English) conversational partner/teacher both online or offline, 1 to 1 or as a group.

The way I teach is mostly casual, focusing on whatever the client needs to fix. The key, in my experience, is to make yourself understood and also understanding what others are saying and that holds true for any language. I firmly believe that holding a continuous conversation is a great way to get better fast, since that’s the way I learned.

About Face by Sharron Cobb

I have been administering facial treatments and procedures to Expats in Cuenca for 5 years. I created a line of chemical-free products for myself and my clients. At the encouragement of several clients, I am now offering my products to the public.

Dead skin is a culprit for wrinkled, lifeless, dull skin. Dead skin can make up as many as 18 to 23 layers of your skin. Gritty exfoliating products exfoliate unevenly and if you scrub too hard you could actually damage the skin. That’s why I have included 3 products that gently remove dead skin plus an inexpensive toner that I will recommend to you. Once the dead skin is gone, the skin can absorb the other ingredients to moisturize and build collagen and you’re left with glowing, more youthful skin. You will see a difference if you are consistent in following the protocol.

Where do you go when you have a hankering for a Cuban sandwich? To Cuenca’s favorite Cuban, of course. Frank Gonzalez makes a real Cuban sandwich, not one of those skimpy little things with Wonder Bread and a thin slice of ham. Beautiful, thick pieces of smoked ham and roasted pork will leave you with a smile. And don’t forget to grab some cinnamon rolls to take home. Lots of flavor and a great moist texture, they’re a safe bet.

Recommendation for Ta’Lico, restaurant

An interesting thing happened to me the other day. I was supposed to meet friends at Ta’Lico, a Chinese restaurant across from Hotel Oro Verde for lunch, but for some reason the others ended up at a neighboring Chinese restaurant and I ended up sharing lunch with Ta’Lico’s owner all by myself.

Another interesting thing is that many years ago I lived and worked in China for a year and I developed a great love of Chinese cuisine.

Southern Country Cornbread Dressing:

• 1 box MHG Cornbread mix
• 3 large eggs (1 for MHG Cornbread, 2 for cornbread dressing)
• 1/2 cup milk
• 4 slices white bread diced small (tip dice bread and let dry out overnight)
• 1/2 yellow onion diced
• 2-3 celery stalks diced
• 2 tablespoons butter diced
• 1 10 oz can cream of chicken soup (substitute the dry package and mix with 10oz heavy cream)
• 2 cups chicken stock or broth
• 1 teaspoon salt
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
• 1 teaspoon ground sage
• 1/2 teaspoon thyme

Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease an 8×8-inch pan.
In a large bowl, combine the MHG Cornbread dry mix, 1 egg, and buttermilk. Let rest for 3 minutes then spread into 8×8-inch pan. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool.
Reduce oven temperature to 350°F. Grease a 9×13-inch pan. Wipe out the bowl. Crumble the cornbread into the bowl and mix in the rest of the ingredients — do not forget the additional 2 eggs. Pour into the prepared 9×13-inch pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the center is set.
Chop your onions and celery while the MHG Cornbread is cooling.
