Reposting due to error in link yesterday: An incredible opportunity

Foundation Hogar de Esperanza in collaboration with other foundations is making preparations for our largest Christmas event ever. Over 500 people will receive assistance and depending on support, the number could go much higher. There are many activities planned from small parties to trips with the children. Due to COVID restrictions, we will not have one large party like other years.

Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope) takes a very distinctive approach to the assistance we provide. Each family has one child who is facing critical illness such as cancer, HIV or other challenges. At least 40 of the children will come from the cancer hospital, SOLCA in collaboration with Hogar Emaus. We are in the process of collecting the data on selected families and we are inviting you to participate.

You can donate, sponsor a family, and/or help in other ways. However you would like to participate, we will do our best to accommodate. To receive updates or to participate, please contact us. Each food package will cost $50. To provide a complete wardrobe for a child $50 and toys will cost $20. These are estimated costs. You can, if you desire, spend time with a family in need this Christmas and make the purchases yourself. Contact us for more information or to be assigned a family.

To make a donation:

Thank you for supporting families in need.

Two beautiful dogs for adoption

These two beautiful dogs are up for adoption after being rescued and cared for by Patan Animal Rescue.

The first dog, the beautiful Schnauzer (photo courtesy of Scott Cushing), shows how beautiful this boy is; great disposition and very loving. He would be fine in a family situation or with other pets in the house. He gets along very well with dogs and cats. He is one-year old and has been neutered. He is active, playful and enjoys being able to run in the back yard.

The second dog, a beautiful black female poodle about one year old, has just been here for several days but has fit in beautifully with the other dogs. She has been spayed and has a lovely quiet disposition. She doesn’t bark very much and loves to be around people and other animals. She appears to enjoy also playing chase with the others.

These two dogs have bonded so it would be very desirable for the two to be adopted together. If you are interested in one or the other or both, arrangements can be made to meet them here at our location in Cuenca.

Please contact us through our email:

Kolly needs your help

Greetings GringoPost friends,

I’m Karen and I have rescued a very badly injured kitten. I don’t have a way to help her. She needs a responsible family who will love her and take good care of her. She needs to be spayed and vaccinated, but I don’t have what I need for that.

So, I need your help. This kitty is a little bit affectionate and she is also shy because of the mistreatment she has received all her life.

I need your help please

Don’t be the last one to know

The law you have never heard of may cost you up to $1500 in fines!

“I didn’t know anything about the law. I am in violation. What do I do now?”

Ecuador has joined 140 other countries in the fight against money laundering (concealment of the origins of illegally obtained money). The 140 nations include the US and Canada. Ecuador now requires everyone (including expats with permanent residency) to fill out a declaration of assets over $224,240 (single) or $448,480 (couple)

Here’s the catch: the declaration includes any assets you hold anywhere in the world. For example, any retirement investments, rental homes (and with the increase in real estate prices, even a modest home may be worth over $200k), etc.

News about Nunkui project.

Dear friends, we send you our best regards and our best wishes. It is a source of joy for us to have met wonderful people in Cuenca, people who have believed in us and have been part of this proposal to preserve the culture and natural wealth of the Amazon. We are convinced that respect for life and re-connection with nature is essential for life.

As a Nunkui project we are working with Amazonian indigenous communities, we have expanded and now we are visiting communities of the Cofán Nationality in the province of Sucumbíos, north of the Amazon, and we have also reached other areas of the country, and we are developing projects in the Ecuadorian coast, in communities within the Machalilla National Park (Puerto López). The projects are proposals for local development, based on conservation and respectful community education free of violence in schools. The challenges are great, poverty, the vulnerability of the communities, the lack of state support, the pressure on natural resources, are factors that impede the development of the communities; however, the indigenous peoples are sure that it is possible to do so and they have made the decision to protect their territory.

Allspice / Gramm Bulkshop

Dear friends, we share with you some health benefits of allspice:

Many of the compounds in allspice are being studied as potential treatments like:

Reduce Inflammation

Treat Nausea

Eugenol, the compound that makes allspice is sometimes used to treat nausea. Allspice tea may help settle an upset stomach.

Prevent Infection

In some studies, eugenol has also shown antiseptic and antifungal properties. In one study, it was used to eliminate E. coli bacteria and yeast when applied to the skin.

Pain Relief

The eugenol in allspice is also frequently found in over-the-counter toothache remedies.

Ease Menopause Symptoms

This helps decrease the negative symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes. Eating more allspice seems to be a low-risk treatment for menopause symptoms in many women.

Slow Cancer Growth

Allspice contains a large amount of phenols, or aromatic compounds. Many phenols are being studied as cancer-fighting treatments. Quercetin, ericifolin, eugenol, and gallic acid are being studied for their ability to slow the growth of cancer cells.

How to prepare allspice

For best results, get whole allspice berries and crack or grind them when you want to cook with them. Allspice can be used in many different kinds of recipes. Here are some popular and easy ways to add this versatile spice to your diet:

Add allspice to gingerbread for additional spiciness

Sprinkle ground allspice on roast vegetables

Make jerk chicken in the traditional Jamaican style, with lots of allspice
Sprinkle some allspice into a chai latte

Add allspice to curries or stews to add heat and depth

Mix allspice with cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves to make your own pumpkin spice blend

Brew allspice tea

Add allspice to a meat rub to add flavor to roasts

We want to reduce the use of plastic, we use paper covers and we invite you to bring your favorite bag, as well as your containers to fill them with the necessary amount.

Visit our cozy store in Sucre 14-14 and Estevez de Toral, near to San Sebastián Park. 099 505 9604 / 096 060 3748,

Recommendation for Isabel Latta, translation and general assistance

I recently asked Isabel Latta to accompany me as I went to several appointments. I’m glad I did. Although my Spanish is probably sufficient for speaking with the doctora, between the labs and the insurance and all of the go here, go there, Isabel’s help made it all much easier.

She is a very good translator, a conscientious person and a pleasure to spend time with. Also lived and studied in the US for many years. Please call Isabel anytime you think you could use the help of a Spanish-speaking assistant.

Recommendation for Segundo Prado, home appliances service

We had a problem with our freezer, it was not keeping a cold enough temperature and items were defrosting. I called Segundo and he came out that day. He checked it out and then came back the next day with the needed parts. The freezer is now working properly.

We are so pleased with his service. We highly recommend him for appliance repairs. He does speak English.

I would highly recommend connecting with her for any Spanish language needs.
