“The Village Vanguard of Cuenca! I’ve spent $30 to $40 in New York just to listen to this quality of jazz. Cuenca is so lucky to have NYC Jazz. Great food and music.”

— Danielle Robertshaw

“If you haven’t been to Cuenca’s Jazz Society Café yet, do yourself a favor and check them out! I can’t believe how lucky I am to live in a city with such high-caliber jazz. I’ve been to jazz clubs and festivals around the world and the music here blew me away. The acoustics are fantastic and Jim Gala is undoubtedly an incredibly talented musician. The music, the food and drinks – just phenomenal!”

Tullpuna Wine & Art Nights

Join us for the launching of our first Tullpuna Wine & Art Nights, an inspirational and fun event to paint, enough time, and a group of likeminded people, together in a fantastic art gallery atmosphere. Not experience needed, just the desire to create art.

Beginning Thursday, October 14th from 5 to 8 PM, you will have the opportunity to enjoy painting and at the same time learn about the work of local craftsmen.

This time, our paintings will be inspired by the colors of the typical handmade beaded necklaces of indigenous Ecuadorian cultures.

A local “artesano” will demonstrate on site the elaboration, creation process and designs of these crafts, also available for purchase.

Tullpuna Nights will include:

One cup of wine, white or red.
Your own painting station with table easel, acrylic paints, canvas, brushes, pencils, chalks and more. (You can bring your own favorite brushes.)

You will take home the canvas with your own painting creation. Instructions, tips and recommendations by in-house artist Christian León “Cleón” (not a painting class)

Cost per person: $40
Cash payment only at PaintourArt Galería or at Kolo Restaurant and Bakery

*Spaces are limited. In order to reserve your seat, payment should be received no later than October 7, 2021.

Soft dinner, desserts and drinks will be offered by FloraCaffe Cuenca at additional cost. Five different meals to select from.

YapaFest 2021 is coming this Saturday

You may be familiar with the word Yapa. When shopping a local mercado, a vendor will often give you a little more than you expected. That little extra is Yapa. Yapa is a Quichua word meaning to give a little extra, and Yapa can refers to both material and immaterial things. During the pandemic, many of our artist friends, musical and artisans, have suffered. It is time for us as a community to join together to enjoy a day in the outdoors and give a little extra… our attention to the arts.

On Saturday, September 25th, beginning at 11 AM and running till 5 PM, La Yunta is hosting YapaFest! 2021, an outdoor music and artisan festival and benefit. There will be four bands spreading joyful music. Artisan vendors will be on hand with their own handmade creations including craftwork and take away food goodies. Also Helping Kids In Ecuador will be on hand with information on their work.

And here is the great news. The event is Free.

Let’s join together as a community of friends to support the arts and spread love in this time of need.

Don’t expect high production, this event is just about artisans sharing the creations they have made and musicians playing on the grass.

For more information visit

Social distancing and masks are required (yeah, we know, but it is still the law in Ecuador).

Since the artisan booths will be in the parking area, parking will be very limited. Please consider coming by taxi (or walking if you live nearby) due to parking limitations.

Saturday, September 25th from 11 AM to 5 PM, Free, La Yunta Restaurante: 1 de Mayo between Las Americas y Fray Gaspar de Carvajal, Cuenca.

Thinking of changing to a new USA debit card and checking account?

2 days ago I just got a great email from Capital One, my online Bank!

If you have been looking for a new or a secondary checking account with a debit card and no minimum balance for your savings or checking accounts, this may be it! We have had a Capital 1-360 checking and savings account for about 8 years now and live in Ecuador most of the time. Great service and now…they are offering a free checking account and ATM/Debit Card plus a sign up bonus of $100! I get nothing out of this but to spread a great product and be a good friend! Win, Win. Just go to and sign up. No joke.

One thing they started doing earlier this year w/o notice…at least which I did not see, was they give me monetary credit 2 days before the actual deposit is due from Social Security and a State Pension check! Thought it might be for being a good customer for 8 years. But look, that is in their offer here for everyone! One time the ATM machine (in Ecuador) I use forgot to give me the money. I always get a receipt so I called Capital One and they gave me credit for the transaction even before it was verified the machine had malfunctioned. That is service. We still have a brick and mortar bank but we get so little interest on our savings we are not even required to advise the tax man! But, Capital One does. No foreign transaction fees on purchases with their debit card or ATM fees (Based upon the EC Bank’s ATM you use. I use Banco de Austro — never a fee from them). My other bank in the USA will charge me $5 just to check my balance at an any ATM other than theirs. Guess which ATM/Debit Card I use when travelling?

The only hitch is you will need a USA address to get the card and checks sent to. We did ours before the move to EC and have a relative the cards go to when they expire.

Recommendation for Victor Ojeda

I would like to give my enthusiastic recommendation, as have many others on Gringo Post, to Victor Ojeda. Victor is an incredibly versatile guy who has had years of experience helping people with spoken and written translations, offering day trips around Cuenca, transportation to/from Guayaquil airport, helping with cell phone, internet, DirecTV, and utilities setup, any type of shopping, taking a pet to the vet, car registration, helping to obtain a driver’s license and cedula.

Most recently, Victor helped me complete the process for obtaining an Ecuadorian driver’s license. I needed to brush up on my standard transmission driving skills and Victor was happy to let me practice using his car. He instructed me on the steps I needed to complete after I finished the driving school curriculum. Victor helped arrange the written driving test in Gualaceo and he made an additional trip with me to Gualaceo to finally obtain my driver’s license.

Victor “knows the ropes” when working through sometimes complicated procedures, and he does it always with a smile. He speaks perfect English, having lived for seven years in the United States.

Without a doubt, I highly recommend using the services that Victor provides. You won’t be disappointed.

Save money on dog grooming

Get yourself a grooming tool that really works on removing dead hair. Have you heard about the Furminator?

Used correctly, it cuts out the dead hair with razor edges, and then this tool even unloads the dead hair that has accumulated on the head with a single push of a button. Gone are the days of pulling fur/hair out by the roots. And gone too the business of removing hair from the brush. So easy, so effective!

The product comes in different designs, depending on whether your dog has long hair or short, even if your dog is large or small. I know, so many refinements. Otherwise, there’s a simple one-size-fits-most model.

Please call or email me for more information.

Recommendation for Xavier Zhindon, Palm computer, computer repair, sales, service

I recently purchased a slightly used laptop from Xavier. He went over it with me thoroughly highlighting features he felt would more than meet my needs and pointing out a couple of things about the laptop that could need attention in future.

The laptop runs OBS studio, Davinci Resolve 17, and GIMP with ease. These are the most demanding of my video production applications.

It has been about a month since my purchase and the laptop is performing great. I will be back to Xavier if I have any future computing needs.

Recommendation for Kolo Restaurant and bakery

After working with Frank on the details, on Saturday, September 18, we had a birthday party for our puppy who turned one-year old.

Frank arranged to have us use the front room so as not to disturb other diners. Fifteen people congregated to celebrate the no host cumpleaños, but we did provide each guest with one of Frank’s fabulous cinnamon buns.

Each and every guest was thrilled with their meal and the service. Though Frank took the day off, Mateo and Carolina were superior at meeting everyone’s needs. Kudos to the cooks as well.

A wonderful time was had by all. Jack received so much attention, he slept the rest of the day and the next.

Recommendation for Pei Zhao, Chinese food take out or delivery

I am relatively house bound, and I have been on a quest to find Chinese food I would re-order for take-out. I grew up in Chicago and we had outstanding Chinese restaurants. Fortunately, my parents introduced me to Chinese restaurants when I was still a toddler so I can be a little difficult to please.

The winner seems to be Pei Zhao with whom many of you are familiar.

I have had her dumplings in the past. They have been worthy of re-order all along. Today I ordered her Kung Pao Chicken. She apparently understands that Schezwan food is supposed to be hot (spice hot) and that there should be fewer peanuts than chicken. The veggies were still crisp. The one order I received from Pei Zhao is enough for two meals, and the free rice could make it enough for three meals.

I also ordered the Salt and Pepper Shrimp for later in the week-end. It also comes with free rice and an offering of extra pepper. I have not weighed it, and it certainly looks like at least a pound of good size shrimp. Another two+ meals for one visit.

I will be ordering more food from her. She is not a restaurant. She cooks at home so it is delivery or take out only.
