Real stories from the Hogar – All Alone

Some of our most complicated cases come from Taisha and surrounding area, deep in the Amazon. Many of them do not speak much Spanish, their native language is Quechua, nor have they been outside their communities. So, when a baby is sick and must be rushed to Cuenca, things could get quite scary and uncomfortable for the parents. We have established connections with community representatives in many of these communities.

We received a call from The Cantonal Board of Macas that a 15-year-old mother was at the hospital with her 4-month-old son, who was in serious condition with pneumonia. Although, they had given her instructions to come to the Foundation, no one had heard from her for days. Oscar, our patient coordinator, found her sleeping on a hospital chair, scared, being alone in an unknown city.

Young, underage mother’s is one of our targeted priorities and we provide a safe place for them, counselling and support. You can support young mothers by donating at: or for other options, including a tax receipt or bank transfer: Thank you for your support.

Wes the Mentalist, success in Vilcabamba

Total donations for various charities over the last 6 weeks now stands at $1700.
The wild and crazy, quirky, friendly, generous patrons at Carro Azul donated $580 to New Life and other charities.

The founder of Cuenca Soup Kitchen was my host. Bob Higgins continues to touch the lives of the needy and the well-to-do.

I highly recommend the best chicken I’ve ever tasted anywhere, even better than my Grandma’s. And that’s saying something.

When in Vilcabamba, enjoy the cuisine and hospitality at Nancy’s Blue Car.
I was raised in WV, the Mountain State. The twisty, curvy, bumpy…fallas geológicas…brought back pre-interstate highway days of my youth.

John Denver could just as easily have been singing about the Valley of Longevity.
Almost Heaven!

Grand Opening of Cresly Pizzeria on Remigio

What: It is my pleasure to invite you to attend a real Ecuadorian Inauguration, or Grand Opening, of a family run pizzeria. Where: on Remigio Crespo across from the Claro Building and next to a Tutto Freddo.

When: Friday, September 17, at 4 PM

Who: The family Vinansaca and Coro have now three Cresly brand pizzerias in Cuenca. This most recent one is the dream of the youngest son of Ana and Jaime, Jimmy. The whole family is involved. His older sister, older brother, aunts, uncles, cousins. I am lucky to be treated as a Great Aunt, Tia Abuela, and I will be cutting the ribbon around 4 PM. I hope you will join me.

Friday, September 17, at 4 PM, free, Remigio Crespo y Miguel Diaz, Cuenca.

Gentle leader, head halters for dogs

So you tried the Easy-Walk harness and it didn’t measure up to the challenge? That happens. Some dogs pull harder than others. Then it’s time to consider a head halter. This is not a muzzle! It is a simple cloth band that fits around a dog’s nose and attaches to a leash below the chin. The operating principle is that when you pull a dog’s nose downward his body stops thrusting forward. So simple.

Now, at first your dog will probably not cotton to this new nose-wear. That’s normal. I always say, it’s like you wearing a ring on your finger if you’ve never worn one before. At first, it’s all you can think about. But in time, it bothers you more when you’re not wearing it.

The thing to do is to introduce your dog to the halter. Let her sniff it. Then next time, maybe put it on her nose without attaching a leash. And finally, attach the leash.

Notice in the pic below, it’s only the dachshund-mix who needs one. You never know.

I have lots of head halters made by Gentle Leader in sizes S, M and L. I even have an XL.

Please call or email me for more information.

La Carreta – kratom capsules; natural painkiller, anxiety, stress

Congratulations Cuenca, now we have Kratom Capsules available in stock. The strain is Bali Red. Each capsule contains 0.5g, and we recommend starting with a dosage of 2-4 capsules. Kratom is the leaf of the tree Mitragyna Speciosa native to Southeast Asia. Kratom is a natural painkiller that works, and an herbal supplement that can replace the need for opioids. It has anti-anxiety properties and helps fighting depression and stress. A powerful plant that has as well been successfully used to get people through opiate withdrawal. It works by stimulating the same opioid-receptors in the brain and therefore takes the edge away from the withdrawal and gives you a sense of inner calm. Reminder from Bernan’s Home Canned Foods

We just wanted to remind you of our yellow sweet corn shipment from Cotacachil. We will be getting more of their delicious corn either the end of this month or beginning of next month. It all depends on Mother Nature and how fast the corn is ready for harvest. They harvest the corn in the morning and it’s on its way here that very afternoon! This month I got an advance notice so I can notify all of you and start taking your orders.

If you have never tried this corn and like sweet corn, you don’t know what you’re missing. Even after freezing, it tastes just like the corn we got from Iowa. With the holidays coming up it might not be a bad idea to order yours while you can. After only 1 week I have taken orders for over half of what I thought we would be needing. The cost is $1 an ear.

Along with this delicious sweet corn we also have a full pantry. If you would like a new product list, just let me know and I’ll be happy to send one to you. Want to be on our mailing list? Let me know and I can add you to our list. Each month I send out a monthly flyer along with a current product list. I’m sending out just over 150 each month so adding you would be no trouble at all.

Thanks so much,

The Hop Factory: Best place for craft beer and coffee in Cuenca

Come to The Hop Factory this Thursday and Friday from 1:30 to 7:30 PM, for some great craft beer. We do home deliveries on Thursday from 8 AM to noon.

We are on east side of Cuenca, Calle del Himno y Bandera Nacional. We have darts and chess boards available to play, as well as outdoor seating.

Our available beers are: Bourbon Barrel (11.5%) $4, IPA (6%) $3, Stout (6%) $3, American Amber Ale (6%) $3, Pale Ale (5.5%) $3. We make a truly “old school” beer that is unfiltered and naturally carbonated.

Low cal/low carb beers: $3.00
Our Rowdy Rabbit is an all-natural Light Blonde Ale that only has 84 calories and 5.8 carbohydrates but still has 4% abv. This slightly hazy beer is light in color/calories/carbohydrates but still has a Citrusy Tart flavor (15 IBU’s) that is created with not only our hops/grains but stands out because of our use of coriander.

Our Light Jamaica and Light Maracuya (Passionfruit) beers are even easier on your waistline. 72 calories, 4.9 carbohydrates, 3.5% abv. and they both go down like juice. These shandy-like beers ended up very popular with our taste testers (The Hop Family (c;).

We are also the only place you can get Black Honey and Café Dona Julita brand coffees. Black Honey is our coffee liqueur made in Vilcabamba. Makes a great White Russian (16% abv $15/750ml bottle).
NEW COFFEE PRICES The coffee we have available in both beans and ground. “Premium” is a medium-dark roast $4. 50/400g,
“Gourmet” is a medium/Columbian roast $5.50/400g and our “Honey” is a medium dark roast originally created just for our coffee liqueur $6.50/400G. HONEY we will need a week advance for the order so we can special order what you need.

If you love vegan food, this is the place to visit

The other day, I went with my vegan daughter to the new Nandala Vegan Restaurant. We were greeted at the door by a the most cheerful, thrilled-to-see-us waiter who seated us at a lovely table for two in a bright, cheery, dining space. At another table, friends Dean and Roberta were seated, and already placing their order. We all knew “it’s a new restaurant”, but we were up for the challenge! We all ordered different plates, and we were not disappointed!! I am not one to rave about restaurants, but this time, I just can’t help myself. Service, presentation, quantity, flavor, flavor, flavor…all 100%. The vegan mayonnaise was to die for. The best I have ever tasted!
