Real Stories from the Hogar – when no one else can help

He came to live with us 9 months ago, brought to us by MIES. His situation was grave. He had no family, that he knew and lived on the streets since he was a little child. Drug addictions, severe mental health issues, abuse, you name it… he has suffered it. He never had any identity card so he had difficulty accessing services. Several attempts were made by various agencies, but all ended in failure. It has been a long haul with Kevin, but he is now drug-free but still suffers from severe, not properly diagnosed, mental illness. We have been working with the city, doctors, and other agencies to find a long-term solution for him. Working with the Civil Registry, he got his first identity card.

This past week, everything finally came together. He was admitted to the mental health hospital for treatment, then working with the city, we will find permanent living arrangements for him once he is completely stable. He has learned to read and write with us, learned to communicate. Anyone who ever saw him on the streets before knows he would not talk or interact. He was full of fear and desperation.
He now has a chance at life and has completely changed. Another life you have helped us change forever.
