We have all seen them and it is difficult to watch them beg. Many of these children are in extremely vulnerable situations. I have been personally concerned about the conditions we see these children in and I have directed our staff at Foundation Hogar de Esperanza to propose some effective solutions to this problem. It is very easy to complain about the situation, however it is a more difficult task to come up with workable solutions. With the current influx of migrants, and no facilities to assist, many of them are now sleeping on the street.
We are currently in the process of collecting information and soliciting support for our proposed project from various agencies and potential donors. We are proposing that we use one floor of our facilities as an emergency shelter to accommodate up to 20 people. They would be provided accommodation, three meals a day, and laundry facilities for one month. In addition, our staff, in collaboration with other agencies, would provide employment counselling, medical, psychological, and other assistance. During the day, the adults would look for work, however the children would remain in the foundation where we would have educators and others to care for them. This way, there will be no need for the children to be on the streets.
As with everything, how to fund such a massive project, is a concern. We however believe that we can provide a temporary workable solution with the right support.
