Petition to reopen a case for two Americans held in Cuenca, Turi prison

A few weeks ago, Rick posted a video about two young American brothers being held in prison here. I watched all the videos produced by DCBORNROB on his YouTube channel, and feel this case needs to be reopened. I wrote up a petition, and will be at The Sunrise Cafe (Calle Larga y Benigno Malo – in the very back of the restaurant by Cosa Prep) today, Wednesday July 28th, from 10 AM – 1 PM, if you’d like to stop by and sign it.

The petition will be sent to our Ambassador, Michael Fitzpatrick, and the Stephenson’s representatives in Maryland. A thank you to Orlando for making his restaurant available for this cause.

Thankfully, this case is gaining more recognition since the first interviews came out a month ago:

Expat support group?

Is there any such group that could offer some (non-medical) support and advice to expats living alone here—some place you can share any problems you might be having and who might offer some friendly advice or where you can just meet up and share a cup of coffee/chat/phone call…anything…for some moral support; especially those who might not be in fb groups. Perhaps there is a WhatsApp support group?

Sweet stray puppy needs home

A young woman from the States is visiting Cuenca and found this adorable stray puppy in Quilotoa. Her intent was to ship him back to the States, but with the change in laws from the CDC regarding rabies control, this can’t happen.

He has seen by a vet and being treated for worms and conjunctivitis. Once these treatments are completed next week, he can be given prepaid vaccines.

He weighs 5 kg and estimated to be about 17 kg full grown., He is estimated to be 8-10 weeks old. He knows sit and whines when he needs to use the bathroom. Great on a leash. He’s a total snuggle bug and the sweetest pup. Comes with food and vaccines, harness/leash.

If you’re interested in meeting this little guy, please contact me.

The film “Titanic” attempted to be

La Guarida is happy to present on the big-screen:

Revolutionary Road
a film by Sam Mendes
presented in English with Spanish subtitles
with stirring performances by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet

Wednesday, July 28th at 6:30 PM
Doors open at 5:30 PM
Reservations with dinner required
Limited capacity
Tel. 099 806 8071

About: “Revolutionary Road” is about an unhappy couple in the Connecticut suburbs whose marriage implodes. Frank and April have always seen themselves as special, different, ready and willing to live their lives based on higher ideals. So, as soon as they move into their new house on Revolutionary Road, they proudly declare their independence from the suburban inertia that surrounds them and determine never to be trapped by the social confines of their era. Yet for all their charm, beauty and irreverence, the Wheelers find themselves becoming exactly what they didn’t expect: a good man with a meaningless job whose nerve has gone missing; a less-than-happy homemaker starving for fulfillment and passion; an American family with lost dreams, like any other. Driven to change their fates, April hatches an audacious plan to start all over again, to leave the comforts of Connecticut behind for the great unknown of Paris. But when the plan is put in motion, each spouse is pushed to extremes – one to escape whatever the cost, the other to save all that they have, no matter the compromises.

Forming Cuenca Gourmet Food and Wine Club

Greetings fellow food and wine enthusiasts:

First an Introduction: We previously started and ran the Gourmet Food and Wine Club in Costa Rica. The concept was streamlined from a Chicago Gourmet Society with lots of rules to the following basic premises:

1) Once a year, you agree with a partner of your choice to host The Monthly Gourmet Food and Wine Club. This may be hosted at your home or a restaurant of your choosing. Events are held the last Saturday of the month starting at 6 PM.
2) Members select and create a culinary theme with wines for their assigned month. Creativity in keeping with the theme is encouraged! (Caribbean, Black and White, Evening in Paris, New York Stork Club, Latin Fusion, etc. Let your culinary imagination run wild).
3) Members are encouraged to embrace the theme each month with spirit and attire.
4) While you fully host with your partner a Gourmet Club, one month a year, you enjoy 10 other fabulous evenings of food, wine and conversation. (Once a year a social is hosted, with individual member bringing their unique culinary creations and favorite wine). There is a maximum of 11 partners.
5) Note: In this era of COVID, so that everyone may enjoy mask free dining, proof of vaccination will be required for membership.
6) This is an ideal club for those who enjoy elegant gourmet food and wine and lively conversation as we emerge from the pandemic.
7) The first meeting to plan the calendar year will be the last Saturday night in August, 28th at 6 PM. We will advise of the restaurant location. This kick-off membership event will be organized for separate checks. Let’s get to know each other.

For more information and/or to confirm your attendance at the kick-off, contact Rosemary or Barry Rein. reinrosemary@gmail.com/ 1bbrbarry@gmail.com

A local family really needs your help

Many of you know Sara Cárcamo from Visa Angels Ecuador. She has been one of our Angels for over 2 years. Her family is from El Salvador but they have lived here in Cuenca for over 17 years. Her mother and father are Ministers at Iglesia Evangelica Hogar Cristiano AD and have spent this entire Pandemic and before helping those who are in need.

Now it is their time to ask for help. Marta, Sara’s mother has been diagnosed with a serious disease which will require a Chemo treatment that the IESS is not able to provide. This is a procedure needed for her to eligible and enter into the transplant list waiting for a new liver. The only available place where they can do this rare chemo is in Guayaquil, through private doctors since it needs to be done through an artery. Time is essential in her treatment since the tumor found in her liver grew in 1 month since it was diagnosed.

BBQ smoker wanted

Looking for a vendor or custom builder of a true “BBQ smoker”.

My definition of a “BBQ Smoker”:

I am looking for an insulated box that is resistant to rain or cool weather, and has an engineered airflow that provides even heat throughout. Example brand names of what I seek: Backwoods Smokers, Stumps Smokers, Fast Eddy’s, Cookshack, Meadow Creek. Respectfully, if you do not recognize these brand names, then you do not know what I am looking for.

I am not looking for one of those low quality cookers that are merely horizontal barrels that are split in half and hinged. I see those in numerous tiendas.
I will consider an “Ugly Drum Smoker” as a second choice (e.g. Gateway Smoker) – these are vertical barrel smoker with engineered vents.

The Hop Factory: Best place for craft beer and coffee in Cuenca

Come to The Hop Factory this Thursday and Friday from 1:30 to 7:30 PM, for some great craft beer. We do home deliveries on Thursday from 8 AM to noon.

We are on the east side of Cuenca, Calle del Himno y Bandera Nacional. We have darts and chess boards available to play, as well as outdoor seating.

Our available beers are: Bourbon Barrel (11.5%) $4, IPA (6%) $3, Stout (6%) $3, American Amber Ale (6%) $3, Pale Ale (5.5%) $3, Jamaica Shandy (4.5%) $3. We make a truly “old school” beer that is unfiltered and naturally carbonated.

Low cal/low carb beer: ($2.50)
Our Rowdy Rabbit is an all natural Light Blonde Ale that only has 84 calories and 5.8 carbohydrates but still has 4% abv. This slightly hazy beer is light in color/calories/carbohydrates but still has a Citrusy Tart flavor (15 IBU’s) that is created with not only our hops/grains but stands out because of our use of coriander from our friends @ Gramm’s Bulk Shop (thanks guys).

We are also the only place you can get Black Honey and Café Doña Julita brand coffees. Black Honey is our coffee liqueur made in Vilcabamba. Makes a great White Russian (16% abv $15/750ml bottle). The coffee we have available in both beans and ground. “Premium” is a medium-dark roast $4/400g, “Gourmet” is a medium/Columbian roast $5/400g and our “Honey” is a medium dark roast originally created just for our coffee liqueur $6/400g.

Please have all orders in by Wednesday to ensure on-time delivery. $18 minimum for free delivery under $18 we add $2.

Roku Premiere 4K new sealed box

The Roku Premiere is physically odd. Compact and light, you wonder why Roku didn’t choose to make it a neat little stick. Instead, it looks like the front piece of a streaming box that’s been cut in three. It doesn’t even have the weight to stand flat on a surface; instead it dangles out of your TV at the end of a bundled HDMI cable, with a USB cable and wall plug providing power.

The only other thing in the box is the remote, a pleasantly ergonomic affair with a stripped-back selection of buttons that includes dedicated shortcuts for four major apps (in the UK, that’s Netflix, Google Play Movies & TV, Rakuten and Spotify). The remote requires line of sight to work, which is a shame when you consider that the design of the Premiere otherwise encourages you to hide it away. It doesn’t have a microphone for voice control, either.

Delivery: real sourdough, southern biscuits, bagels and more

Hi, Sunday Brunch Cuenca family.

New product alert:
Homemade Southern Biscuit Mix, 2 lbs. for $10

You can make biscuits yourself whenever you need. Just add milk.
You can also use as a topping for casseroles, cobblers, and more.
Keep in the freezer and just take out what you need.

We now also have ravioli.
Our 3-cheese ravioli comes frozen in a pack of 32 for $10. The pasta is homemade. Take out however many you need, boil, and then toss in your own sauce of choice. We recommend 8 per person. So delicious. You can’t beat homemade pasta. We’ve been eating them ourselves with slices of our sourdough.
