Such a thing as a buyer/renter agent?

I’m having a hell of time with finding a house to rent via long distance. I’m coming back to Cuenca to look boots on the ground, but I’m going to have limited time (two weeks max). I know enough about neighborhoods, transportation, water heaters, leak issues with consistent rain, etc. to ask questions and make some decisions, but my Spanish is limited, especially as far as negotiating a contract.

To be more time efficient, rather than trying to contact individual real estate “agents” (many who seem to have only one or two properties and seem very unmotivated) and since there is really nothing like MLS, has anyone ever used one of these “facilitators” to act as the renter/buyer’s agent to make the queries, translate, schedule showings, etc.?

Moving short-term to search is not doable (with two dogs and a house full of furniture already in EC).

Would love to hear experiences if any. Sorry about any confusion in the previous version of this post.

Petition to reopen a case for two Americans held in Cuenca Turi prison

A few weeks ago, Rick posted a video about two young American brothers being held in prison here. I watched all the videos produced by DCBORNROB on his YouTube channel, and feel this case needs to be reopened. I wrote up a petition, and will be at The Jazz Society Cafe (Los Cedros y Los Claveles (a block north of Ordonez Lasso) this Wednesday, July 21, from 11 AM – 1 PM, if you’d like to stop by and sign it. The petition will be sent to our Ambassador, Michael Fitzpatrick, and the Stephenson’s representatives in Maryland. A thank you to Debby and James for making their restaurant available for this.

Your gifts are making an investment in the future with eco-friendly diapers

Your generous donations to our April diaper drive are providing children with eco-friendly Gelwear diapers that will last for years.

Gelwear was founded by four students from Yachay Tech University whose goal was to reduce the ecological impact caused by disposable diapers.

Their solution: an eco-friendly, hypoallergenic diaper made with an outer layer of bamboo and an insert made of sugarcane waste. This allows Gelwear diapers to biodegrade 100 times faster than disposable diapers.

The Cuenca Soup Kitchen believes that supporting this Cuenca-based startup is an investment in the future of at risk children, the future of Ecuador, and the future of the planet.

Help an animal rescuer in need

Hi Everyone and especially pet lovers,

My friend Susan, who is an animal rescuer extraordinaire recently overheated her engine in a trip from Vilcabamba to Cuenca to pick up two homeless cats. Now the engine needs to be repaired and it’s going to cost $1000-$1500 to do it. Susan doesn’t have any money. Honestly, she’s always spending anything she’s got on dogs and cats. She’s the most generous person I’ve ever met and I’m hoping we can help her out so she can go on rescuing animals.

I’ve started a GoFundMe for her and I hope you’ll find it in your heart to help one of our own. As an added incentive, anyone who pledges $20 or more can have a free watercolor painting from me. I can do flowers, butterflies, cats, dogs, etc. Please help if you can. Thank you all so much. If you have any questions my WhatsApp number is 098‌ ‌581‌ ‌8073‌.

Mucho Abrazos,

Charles Schwab and Pichincha ATM Remigio Crespo

Charles Schwab rebates all ATM charges at the end of the month. However, at the end of May, I happened to notice that I was not getting all the ATM charges rebated, specifically Pichincha Bank charges at Remigio Crespo.

Early June, I called Schwab. The rep had no idea why, but was to get back to me in 10 days. That never happened. I called again today as there are more $4.48 ATM fees on my account that have not been rebated for May or June. I could probably search back several more months to find more, but I did not.

Another call to Schwab, this time I was told that the ATMs I have been using are not separating the withdrawal from the withdrawal fee, so Schwab’s system cannot identify the fee. The rep suggested I avoid Pichincha bank ATMs, because he could not be certain if it was isolated to the one branch or the bank overall.

Because I am lax in checking at the end of the month, I cannot say if the Old Town branches were bothersome or not. Either way, I do prefer the other banks with less or no fees.

The secret to having Spanish conversations with ease and confidence

One of the most common struggles I hear from expats in Ecuador and Latin America that are trying to learn Spanish to better integrate into their new home, is that you have a bad memory and can’t seem to recall the words you know, when you need them.

So you find yourself having to learn them over and over again.

And basically just a waste of time.

Gramm Bulkshop / cashew nut

Dear friends, in our shop we have cashew nuts. Here we share some benefits of it:

Cashews are especially rich in unsaturated fats — a category of fats linked to a lower risk of premature death and heart disease.

They’re also low in sugar, a source of fiber, and contain a significant amount of protein.
Their rich fiber and protein content can help reduce hunger and increase feeling full.

In addition, cashews contain copper, a mineral essential for energy production, healthy brain development, and a strong immune system. They’re also a great source of magnesium and manganese, nutrients important for bone health.

Cashews are rich in carotenoids and polyphenols, two categories of antioxidants that may help reduce inflammation and offer protection from disease.

Our products always are delicious and fresh.

We want to reduce the use of plastic, we use paper covers and we invite you to bring your favorite bag, as well as your containers to fill them with the necessary amount.

Visit our cozy store in Sucre 14-14 and Estevez de Toral, near to San Sebastián Park.. 099 505 9604, 096 060 3748,

We will be happy to assist you.

Recommendation for Franklin Armando Morocho, construction

This would be a long tale if I told it all… suffice it to say that we had some grout that needed to be placed, showers that needed to be installed, and tiles that had slipped on the roof so the sun (and rain) could shine through. That was the worst – climbing through under an open roof to get to the aperture. Franklin did it all cheerfully and with good humor. He came out from the “attic” area absolutely covered with the dust of many years. He worked hard, repaired what needed to be repaired and charged a just price for his labor. He is a great worker and reliable to boot. Franklin works with his brother, Emilio Morocho – Emilio of all trades.

Recommendation for Angel Panchez, driver, tour guide, and facilitator

My wife and I would like to recommend Angel Panchez as a driver, tour guide, and facilitator. We have used him for over 4 years now. He toured us around Cuenca to help us get familiar with the city and then out to the surrounding communities of Chordeleg, Sigsig, and Ingapirca. We found him to be very knowledgeable of the area and the history of Ecuador. We also use him to transport us back and forth to Guayaquil for when we travel out of the country. He is a very safe driver and has a clean SUV to accommodate our luggage and comfort. We have also used him to help us make various purchases. He knows where to get the best deals. He recently took us to the little fishing village of La Entrata so we could stay at a local B & B. He is on time and very friendly and speaks English fluently. He has never let us down.

Tuesday health tip from El Mundo Orgánico

Swap out granola

Granola is often fiber-rich and low on the glycemic index, so it keeps you feeling full for longer. It may also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, B vitamins, iron, and folate from the rolled oats, fruits, nuts, and seeds. On the down side, however, many granolas are packed with sugar and high in saturated fat. Instead, sprinkle nuts, seeds, or dried fruit over your oatmeal and you’ll get the same taste and nutrition as granola while slashing your sugar and fat intake.

El Mundo Orgánico is accepting orders for “Build-Your-Own Baskets” for deliveries per the following schedule:
