Fluid for fireplaces

Does anyone have a suggestion for fluid mixture for starting fireplaces? Like part vegetable oil, maybe a small portion of diesel (no regular gas, of course).

Got the astrazeneca vaccine Friday

Just FYI, my wife and i went in search of a covid vaccine yesterday. We started at what we thought was our assigned site, the collesium jefferson perez, they said they were no longer giving the jab there but suggested we try the clinica latina a few blocks away. We tried there and were told to go to Unidad Educativa Sagrados Corazone, again just a few blocks away.

After locating the side street entrance we were inundated with help, even with my rudimentary Spanish, they understood that I knew Saturday or Sunday was really my day, since i am 65 and that my wife, 57, wasn’t really eligible until this coming Wednesday or Thursday, but that I was hoping to get done a bit early as we are traveling next week and didn’t want to show up at the airport with side effects that could mirror covid symptoms.

They agreed to “jab” us, there was no line, we were in and out in 15 minutes. They even agreed to write our vaccine in on our “yellow card” vaccine record in addition to giving us a very official looking form documenting our vaccine. Hope this is helpful to some, and to those who find it less than helpful——well, don’t read it:)

Is anyone bringing a container from Canada to Cuenca?

I need a replacement part for a Vitamix blender, and Vitamix will only deliver if it’s to a Canadian address, since that’s where I bought my blender. It is the food bowl or plastic pitcher part. It would be light but a little bulky. The box would likely be about 12″ x 12″.

It would be appreciated if you could text me, at 098 738 3897.

Stay connected with “The Buddy Circle”

The Buddy Circle is an easy-to-use emergency monitoring system with which you and a chosen group of friends or family can remain aware of each other’s wellbeing. It has been designed as an automatic daily check-in system, on your cell phone, at a time of your choosing.

Once you set a time to be notified, if you have not checked in by then, the system will ask you to check in at that time on a daily basis. If you fail to check in, the system will attempt to contact you two more times, at 30-minute intervals. If there is no response after three tries, it will alert your contacts that there is a possible problem. It will also provide your address and a Google map of your location.

The program is available now in English and Spanish in both the Apple and Android app stores. It may also be accessed through one of the following links:

There is currently no charge to the user.
If you have any questions, you can contact me,

Recommendation for Venga, restaurant

I was lucky to be introduced to this great new addition to the Cuenca gourmet restaurant scene by a friend who lives near there in the Tres Puentes district. The restaurant is right across from the Tarqui River. It is run by a lovely young couple, who cook and serve the food themselves. The food is interesting, wonderfully tasty and served in beautiful dishes. All of that is my catnip. The trifecta.

Venga is only open on Saturdays right now. They serve a fixed price five course menu for $25. My friend and I split a bottle of French Cotes du Rhone wine, very reasonably priced at $25. No cocktails, but I think they are wise to concentrate on what they do well.

Recommendation for Kolo, restaurant and bakery

For a first semi-indoor eating experience I couldn’t have been more thrilled to have an amazing breakfast at Kolo, on Luis Cordero and Juan Jaramillo on the second floor of Hotel La Vieja Mansion.

The food was delicious and artfully presented, the open air around the skylight was refreshing, the decor was uplifting and the warmth of owner/friend Frank Gonzalez made it all even more special.

If you live in or visit Cuenca this restaurant is one you will want to return to again and again.
