An Introductory Exploration of Goethe’s Theory of Color

A Hands-on Workshop led by Artist Sandra Doren at idiomART.

“Color itself is a degree of darkness.”

In the year 1810, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the German author, poet, philosopher, playwright and scientist, published his book on The Theory of Color. After performing firsthand investigations and experiments himself, Goethe radically opposed the then universally held theory of color that was championed by Sir Isaac Newton of England. We will recreate some of Goethe’s principal explorations into the wide-ranging phenomena of color. His findings still have impact in today’s color applications.

Just breathe – and meditate from home Sunday

– Just breathe. Attention to the breath is a sort of bridge that connects the mind to the body. ~Thich Nhat Hanh

Dear Cuenca Community,

Shambhala Cuenca would like to invite you to meditate together from your home this Sunday at 10.30 AM. There are many forms and methods of meditation – the form you choose doesn’t matter, however it’s a very good thing to remember our shared humanity as we sit quietly and become mindful for a period of time.

Online meditation sessions are available at https://virtual-cushion.shambhalaonline.org

Teacher needs work

Due to the on-going effects of the Covid crisis, some schools have been closed and others are just beginning to reopen. Teachers at some schools have been notified that they will be let go as of June 30. My friend is one of those.

She has two school-aged children and lost her husband due to illness earlier this year, so there is only one income. Sadly, she’s been let go and as of July 1 will be struggling even harder to make ends meet, pay the rent and food and clothing for the children. Even when she was working, it was only part-time and paid only $200 a month.

In July she will be available to assist you with your needs all day – morning or afternoon. She can tutor children on-line or in your home (Spanish only), clean, cook, prepare food, garden, run errands for you – even teach you Spanish if you wish.

Please contact me if you have any jobs she could do for you. And thanks to those who have extended a helping hand for her and for others. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Conversational Spanish

Hello Friends,

Offering pre-intermediate Spanish conversational sessions twice a week for people who already know the language a little bit but want to reach the next level. One course.

The sessions are at a restaurant, so yes you will have to buy at least a drink. But no Zoom, no Skype, no faulty internet-dependent sessions.

You will be speaking face to face to a group of human beings, reptilians, Martians or whoever/whatever* signs up first, and not on the computer through a screen. Neat.

One group is full. But there is a couple of more people interested. So, we need one or two more to set another one up too.

So, if you are interested write me an email at any time or call me after 4 PM.

So, wherever you are, take care.

Arturo

PS. For those extraterrestrial entities somewhere on the Moon, on Mars or anywhere in the universe, write me an email because I don’t know if my cellphone has that kind of coverage out of Earth, but you can try anyway.

Recommendation for La Velada Cuencana, entertainment

Hotel Carvallo sponsors the Velada Cuencana from time to time. We attended in June and it is coming up again next weekend The Velada is a kind of nineteenth century dinner theater. It is performed as a framing playlet about the poet Crespo, within which the performers sing and dance – with the difference that the music is Chopin, Delibes, Schonberg, and so on, and Spanish songs and ballads that were unknown to us and very lovely. They will be performing this next weekend, so it seems timely to do a recommendation re the last time. Hotel Carvallo accompanies the show with a grand prix fixe menu. It was a personal, beautiful show.

Recommendation for 3 volcanoes in 3 days, Amazing South American tours, tour guide

What can be added to what’s already been said about Felipe Neira? A most personable man who’s completely fluent in Spanish and English and is in love with his own country; what more can a tourist ask for? How about sincerely interested in his clients? Whether needs, or families, he’s tuned-in. Or how about endlessly knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, sighted along a road or on a hike?

This is important, when making a trip to places like Cotopaxi, Chimborazo or (Lake) Quilotoa. If you love walking, learning and, most importantly, experiencing, you will want Felipe to guide that adventure. Who else could find you a room with a huge window, that puts Cotopaxi front-and-center, from your bed, as you wake up? Who else can find the local artists and artisans along the route, that are thrilled to show their paintings, carvings or jewelry?

Local cuisine is, likewise, featured. For the less-adventurous, more familiar food is always available. No complaints from these two, very happy clients of Felipe.
