Requirements to rent an apartment in Guayaquil?

Does anyone know about the income requirements for renting an apartment in Guayaquil, Ecuador? Is it required to get a Ruc to prove you have income? I am an online English teacher from the US. I notice some of the listings have that.

Thanks in advance

How does it feel to be one of the 40,000?

In Cuenca, estimates are that there are about 40,000 people who live on less than $2 per day. COVID restrictions have made the situation worse for many. They struggle to meet basic food needs, get medical care, pay rent, the list goes on. Basics that we take for granted every day.

This week thanks to a generous donor we were able to replace mattresses and fumigate the apartment for a mother of three who had a bedbug infestation. We are providing oxygen support for three premature babies. We are supporting thousands with food who depend on us for the basics.

At Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope), our approach is very effective. With our partners from local universities, businesses such as Supermaxi, hospitals and others we have one of the largest integrated programs in Cuenca, providing medical, food, clothing, and other supports. Our team of university students visit people in their homes and assess how best to meet the needs. Every day our team provides life-saving support to many, and we can do more!

How can you help? Drop off any items you no longer need or call us to arrange pick up. Your financial support is always appreciated. You can visit us at the corner of Juan Montalvo and Sucre from 9am to 5pm. Call or email us. You can make a donation at: https://www.givingway.com/donate/fundacion-hogar-de-esperanza or https://hogaresperanza.org/en/donations/ for other donation options. Together, lets continue to support those in need in our city. Thank you for your support.

Wire transfers from the US

I just did a wire transfer from my US bank to JEP and thought I’d share with the community the fun new procedures that now exist (thanks to the US government’s updated anti-money-laundering procedures).

When I did a wire transfer two and a half years ago, I had to do none of what is listed below for a smaller wire transfer than what I did this past week.

JEP will now ask you to identify the source of the funds, and to provide documentation that supports that source. In addition to six months’ worth of bank statements from the account where the money is coming from, there are additional requirements:

Little Lupita

Sweet, petite Lupita was rescued from the highway recently. She is about 2 years old and only 7.5 kg. She has the most adorable ear fringe and is very cheerful and docile.

She does very well with other doggies and walks well with a leash. Due to her manageable size, she would be a suitable apartment dog! She currently does her business outdoors when prompted to take a walk.

She has been spayed, wormed, vaccinated and given flea meds.

Would you like to give this darling little girl a new chance at life?

Adjustable walking frame for child

I am asking this on behalf of a family member of my wife. The young girl is 3 y. o. and has a deformed foot from spina bifida. We are trying to work out how to get an adjustable walking frame for her. The father has had a quote from a metal worker in Guayaquil to make one as he couldn’t find any for sale. Any ideas would be appreciated. She is a happy child but I think this would make her much happier.

Learn or improve your Spanish skills with Diego

Hi, My name is Diego. Maybe some of you know me as Diego the bartender, waiter, or just a good friend with whom to talk. Either way, this time I´m not offering pints of beer or great Diegoritas, ”Margaritas.” This time I want to offer you guys the chance to learn or improve your Spanish skills.

As you might know, my native language is Spanish, and in addition to being a bartender, I have been teaching Latinoamerican Spanish, with about 4 years of experience, to different people all around the world through online or face-to-face classes; North American people being my main students.

Through this resource I would be happy to help you improve your fluency in such an important language. We can discuss about any topic that you consider relevant, such as music, politics, culture, sports, among many others that would be useful as practice to improve your learning.

In the process, I could help you as your tutor so that we can correct all the important aspects that we need to work on.

Your first hour Trial Lesson is totally free.
Online or Face-to-face classes at your home. You decide.

Remember that the more you practice the more successful you will be.

Recommendation for Aileve Martinez, cinnamon rolls

I have been eating Alieve’s cinnamon rolls for many months. They are always my breakfast. I have tried other people’s cinnamon rolls but these are by far the best. They are delivered and usually arrive warm. Heavenly. Of course, I have to have one fresh from the oven.

You can expect the cinnamon rolls within hours of ordering and you can order any time. You just have to give her time to make them because they are always made fresh, just for you. They are truly delicious. My friends think so too, if they are lucky enough to come by when I am having breakfast or have just gotten a delivery. Try them. I highly recommend that you do.

After some trail and error, Linda was recommended. She cleaned where others didn’t, wouldn’t or tried with great results. She has a team that works well together – asked good questions learning English. Good salsa music makes the work fast and easy, I recommend her team for regular or what i used them for, the deep clean before a move.

Recommendation for Hosteria El Barranco, hotel and/or event site

Hosteria El Barranco is the perfect place to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, retirement, engagement, wedding, or any other event! One of the owners, Luis Arcentalez, helped me organize three events at the hosteria over a three day period to celebrate with friends. One of the events, included being serenaded by two local musicians while we enjoyed dinner, another was with a group of traditional Canari dancers over dessert and the last, was with a musician from Cuenca, Luis Ullauri, who not only sang but explained the meaning of each traditional Latin song. Luis Arcentalez worked tirelessly to create a different dinner menu for each evening, served as a tour guide for the Cooperativa Fábrica de Hats and the Canari archaeological site, and provided impeccable service at the hosteria for our group of 10 guests. The hotel has a beautiful banquet room that overlooks the pool and provides a view of the Andes Mountains and Santa Barbara river. El Barranco has a full restaurant (breakfast, lunch, dinner and events), a bar / lounge and 5 rooms each with an ensuite bathroom. The pool is amazing and has the perfect temperature, even when it’s cooler outside. Their sauna provides relaxation with an infused scent of eucalyptus.

If you need that special place for an event or just would like to get away and experience true tranquility, Hostería El Barranco is the perfect place for all your needs.

Recommendation for Daniela Cordero, health insurance

I would highly recommend Daniela Cordero with BMI Health Insurance if you are looking for inexpensive, but quantity health insurance here in Ecuador. For example, this past Feb. 2021 I started feeling tremendous pain in the lower part of my back that wouldn’t go away. I live in the small town of Las Tunas on the coast. After a few days of strong pain killers from the clinic in Puerto Lopez that didn’t help,

I called Daniela. She recommended one of the best hospitals in Guayaquil, Omni Hospital. She handled just about everything from check-in to checkout. I was in the hospital for 10 days (morphine drip, antibiotic drip, misc drugs, MRI, Cat scan, etc. large private room, 3 meals/day). BMI picked up the majority of the cost. My out-of-pocket: $1800. Great person to work with and for me quality company.

Recommendation for Victor Ojeda, facilitator for expats

This is about the not-so-obvious benefits of having Victor Ojeda help facilitate your driver’s license application or renewal, among many other things.

For seven and a half years, Victor has been my go-to secret for making life easier in Cuenca. He has helped me find things, buy things, file things, apply for things, schedule things, interpret things, plus drive me wherever and serve as translator.

But he just helped me renew my auto and motorcycle driver’s licenses, and it made me aware of the not-so-obvious benefits of having him on “my team”:

1. He has accumulated and stored all manner of vital information about me in his cell phone. So, when we’re going through any kind of bureaucratic process, he quickly answers everybody’s requests for information so I don’t have to. Usually, all I have to do is sign the required paperwork.

Recommendation for The Hop Factory, brewery

The Hop Factory is an impressive Cuenca brewery. They create beer for all tastes, and just recently added a line of lower calorie/carb beers. We have tried two of those, and they are perfect; especially for the warm sunny days we’ve enjoyed recently. The Hop Factory is located in a peaceful and quiet neighborhood setting just across from the Machangara River linear park and not far off of Gonzalez Suarez. But they also have home delivery available. What more could you ask for?

Hickory apple wood smoked pastrami and salmon

First, the pastrami is brined for 6 days to give it that amazing pastrami flavor. 10-11 hours of keeping the temperature stable at 250 degrees to create the tender pastrami sandwiches we all love.

The pastrami (brisket) is $15 a pound; fair I think in light of the 12-hour day needed to prepare this feast and the costly wood needed to smoke it. I can deliver Reuben sandwiches as well. The Salmon is $10.50 for 200 grams or $23 for a pound. The salmon can also come as a meal for $11 with 130 grams of salmon including potatoes and greens or sticky rice with sauteed broccoli and carrots with Teriyaki sauce.

$9 for a pastrami Reuben sandwich with homemade sauerkraut and Russian dressing. The Hot Pastrami sandwiches will include a side of mashed potatoes and Sauteed Greens and Cole Slaw. Sandwiches come with 4 oz. of meat and you can get as many extra ounces as you want for $1 an ounce.

Delivery is not included and is usually $2-$3 for most locations.
