Vaccine transport – weekend lockdown

I have my second vaccine at Bicentenario campus of the U. of Azuay. I have concerns about getting a taxi there on Saturday morning considering this is the last weekend of lockdowns.

I do use the Azutaxi app, but this last Friday around 6:30 PM, I could not get a taxi to respond when I was at Hospital del Rio after trying for 40 minutes. Finally, an employee called for me.

There is a concern about getting a taxi to return home, especially if I am out of WiFi range.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Help children in need continue their learning with Hogar de Esperanza

For the past year now, Covid-19 has made all of our lives more challenging. Children have been especially affected. Schools remain closed, and many parents here in Ecuador cannot provide their kids with a mobile device to attend their classes online. This has greatly affected their learning, with so many children, especially those already living in poverty, falling greatly behind in their education.

To help address this issue, the Municipality of Ayangue provided a space for its community to set up a children’s library, of which they took the initiative to fix up and paint themselves. They even built bookshelves, however, the shelves remain nearly empty. Hogar de Esperanza is partnering with Rebecca Chastain-Bigsby, an expat living in the Ayangue community, and students from the University of Cuenca, to help bring some relief and joy to these children.

You, too, can help children continue their learning. Let’s help the Ayangue community fill the shelves in its children’s library! We are aiming to collect or purchase 200 children’s books by May 24, when we will deliver them to the community and its eagerly awaiting children.

If you would like to get involved with this initiative, you can drop off donations of children’s books, written in Spanish, at Hogar de Esperanza from Monday-Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM, located at Mariscal Sucre 12-84 y Juan Montalvo, or you can contribute financially from our donation page: and we will purchase them for you. Thank for your support. For more information:

New police post In our neighborhood, above Common Grounds

My friend Jose stated this week they are shopping for more furnishings to make the Officers comfortable in their new digs. I have noticed a few new items inside and saw one of the men from the Barrio (Tandacatu) busily washing the windows and mopping the floors. These guys were/are serious and have been patrolling our neighborhood while we slept or were in for the night lately and immediately after the gringa was assaulted with a knife near Parque Molinero (last Tran Via Stop on Mariscal Lamar) several weeks ago. Jose has told me they had meetings with the Police, and the Mayor’s Office to make this happen. I assumed it would be happening someday…and Jose tells me the date is the 20th or 21st. of May. In addition Jose said the Police will man/woman this post with 8 full time Police Officers, 24hrs a day. They will have a varied mode of transportation.

I dropped of a couple off donations Tuesday afternoon to help with the cost of furnishings the City wanted them to purchase. I guess they wanted to see if the Barrio would put a little skin in the game by requesting the Barrio furnish the office, paint it and upgrade the restroom. And they have! More donations are happily accepted. If someone wants me to assist them with the transfer of a donation or you can call Jose Pacheco, 096 846 3648 he speaks great English.

So, the reason for this re-post is to let the English-speaking residents know of our good fortune and that they should not be surprised to hear an Ecuadorian from our area soliciting for a $5 donation to help furnish the new police station. Jose, who speaks great English has allowed me to post his phone number if any residents who do not speak good Spanish, like me can get in touch with him if they would like to make a donation. Jose also lives at the N/E corner of Parque Molinaro which is also the location of the last Tran Via stop on Mariscal Lamar then onto Las Americas. Jose also sells a hamburger lunch at his home if you have ever seen that going on.

I applaud the locals within our Barrio for their understanding what this police station here means for everyone’s safety. So, if you would like to contact Jose and make a donation. He has a receipt book to give you a copy of your donation.

Recommendations to get the best benefits from your health insurance

“Bluebox, the expat’s one choice for all their insurances needs”

If you have health insurance in Ecuador and have not yet taken advantage of your membership benefits, we tell you how to do it. Most prepaid medical insurance companies in Ecuador have a wide network of doctors and clinics nationwide, so they have created policies with unique benefits as is the case of Confiamed that has Confitravel which is an international coverage service when you decide to take a little getaway around the world. If you are sick and cannot leave home, Confiamed gives you the possibility to access a medical appointment at home or telemedicine. If you suffer an accident and you are not in the province where you contracted your insurance, do not worry Confiamed has the widest network in Ecuador, and you can request your attention in any of the clinics that have agreements with Confiamed nationwide. If you do not have any in that place there is no problem either, you can pay for your care, collect all the documents requested by the company and deliver them to your trusted broker. He will take care of the next step. Now, once you know some of your affiliate benefits, I will tell you how you can access these benefits. If you have a broker he will help you in this whole process and will make your life easier. The systems that I talk about below are in Spanish. That is why I said that a broker will make it easier. You can enter http://www.confiamed. com where you can go to the services tab and click on affiliates portal, at this point you will be asked to enter your username and password, if you do not have an account yet the website will give you the option to create a user. If at this point you find it difficult you can contact us, regardless of whether or not you are a customer. Once you enter this portal you can check the status of your reimbursements, review the network nationwide, check your settlements, monthly payments and others.

Besides that you can make your medical appointments via telephone at 02 397 7827 or WhatsApp 099 600 7733. If you have not managed to do so contact your insurance agent who will schedule the appointment for you. This will allow you to access a medical appointment for a minimum co-payment value of $10.

If you want to know more about the benefits of your policy and how to contract them contact us. We will provide personalized advice in your language.

Recommendation for Garden Goddess, garden design, installation and maintenance

Garden Goddess aka Daphne Dupree is Cuenca’s premier garden guru. We have had the distinct pleasure of working with Daphne for about eight months now. From concept to design to implementation to ongoing maintenance Daphne does it all. And while Daphne does indeed do it all, she specializes in pollinator gardens, fragrant gardens and herbs. Her thinking and her work itself are without equal. Our terrace garden is an exceptional installation; one that continually gets rave reviews. From where we sit, it is pretty simple. If you’re thinking garden then you need to be thinking Garden Goddess.

Recommendation for Alberto Mera – Crimestop Security, digital locks, cameras, electric fences…

I highly recommend Alberto Mera of Crimestop. Alberto and his team dedicated themselves to the task of replacing our old door lock with a new Samsung digital door lock.

Alberto came by to discuss our options. Once the new lock arrived from Quito he came over the same day to install it. They had to enlarge the space in the door for the new mechanism to fit. Alberto and his team worked diligently for several hours to make sure that the fit was perfect. We now have a secure, keyless door lock.

It’s so easy to enter the code or to wave the fob to unlock the door. Also, after closing the door, it automatically locks. No more needing to manually lock the door after someone leaves.

Alberto speaks Spanish and English.
