Clothing: What to bring to Cuenca vs. what can I get at reasonable prices?

Greetings, In another post I asked a question about kitchen items to bring and had such a positive reception, so now I ask about clothing. Hoping others will benefit as well. I welcome any observations about the ins and outs of clothing in Cuenca, but I do have some specific questions:

General question: how do clothing prices compare to US?
Are women’s business suits really costly?
Can I find a one-piece swimsuit?
What about hiking books with really good tread? Good walking shoes? Good arch support?

Thanks

Waterproofing supplies

I found to my disappointment on a recent walk through town that our water resistant jackets no longer resist. Has anyone come across products that can be used on a rain jacket to beef up the water resistance?

Project “Helping Minds”

Hi folks out there, my name is Frank Gonzalez. I’m planning to offer a support group called ‘Helping Minds’. Many of us find that we would benefit from emotional support during these difficult times.
A trained retired therapist has agreed to assist the facilitation of the group.

I have a large place and we will serve coffee, tea and a little something. This is free, but there will be a basket for donations. The meeting will be twice a month in the afternoon – the second and fourth Wednesday of every month – at Kolo Restaurant and Bakery on Luis Cordero #5-65 between Juan Jaramillo y Honorato Vazquez on hotel La Vieja Mansion.

Spanish and English speakers welcome, translation available.

Anybody interested in this please contact me via WhatsApp, 099 297 5788, or email to:

Raising money to buy food for starving people in Ricaute

Some of us have been helping to feed 14 of the poorest families in Ricaute. We buy the cheapest rice and beans available, in bulk, and take it to them. A few months ago we raised $400 and gave them food, but they need more. Ricaute is not a big city, so these people can’t go out on the streets and sell items or beg like in Cuenca…or not as successfully, at least.

I have included some photos of people receiving their food.

Thank you for all who helped last time, and the people want to thank you.

Please donate what you can to my paypal at LiveFoodFactor@yahoo.com. Or if you have food (nonperishable) you can give to Soledad at La Yunta restaurant while dining there.
My paypal is LiveFoodFactor@yahoo.com and I am Susan Schenck.

Tapestry workshop

“Knitting is the new yoga” … Without a doubt, something good happens in our brains when we knit. Knitting slows down thoughts, makes them lighter. interconnects them, weaving and meditating is almost the same, relaxes, concentrates and creates ideas.

We invite you to our tapestry loom course where you can get closer to these experiences, and co-create a beautiful cushion.

Please join an enthusiastic group of native Spanish and English speakers as we converse in each other’s language in an encouraging and supportive environment. After years of meeting in person, we are now continuing with Zoom.

All levels of ability are welcome, so don’t be shy–even if you don’t speak a word of the language you want to learn, you will be helped by those that do.

The Zoom meeting starts promptly at 6 PM every Monday. We end at 7 PM, or shortly thereafter.

No need to confirm your attendance; just show up and enjoy (and learn!).

Luvimar changes its phone number and…

Hello everybody. If you just read the title, Luvimar has a new phone number. It’s a cell phone, with WhatsApp business of course. The new number is 096 895 7920. Please register it.

Also, I wanted to let you know that Luvimar’s website (www.luvimargourmet.com) will be down for a few days because I’m changing hosting service. The first hosting wasn’t secure enough and was letting in a lot of spam on my website, which a lot of you has already experimented. So, I’m switching to a faster more robust and secure hosting service to make your experience better. You can still see all my products and prices in my Facebook fan page (Luvimar.ec ), in the Photo album called “Nuestros productos y precios / Our products and prices”.

Plumbing electronic pump controller, residential-commercial

The electronic pump controller is a device that starts and stops the pump to which it is fitted, to replacing the traditional pressure switch/surge tank system.

The pump is started when as a tap is turned on, the pressure within the system drops below the start-up pressure and is stopped when the flow rate required is zero or less than the shut-off flow rate.

The electronic pump controller protects the pump against unsuitable operating conditions such as dry running or repeated starts-ups due to leaks.

Five star ***** general landscaping service

This is Leonardo, Cuenca’s #1 gardner and landscaper. Many expats have contacted me asking about indoor plants. Some do not have outdoor space and felt they might enjoy having live plants in their homes. Others felt better having something to watch grow while they spent more time inside. Sadly most expressed having disappointing experiences after picking up plants at Plaza de las Flores.

Either they brought pests into their home infecting their other plants or the plants withered and died because the soil was poor or their apartment didn’t have the right conditions for the plants. To have the best chance at having a rewarding stress-free experience which is the goal, a little research and some planning has to be done first.

What Clemencia says at C&C unisex hair design / barber shop

Haircuts are one of the first things people notice when you make a slight alteration,” says Clemencia, stylist and owner of C&C. “When we take the time to make a shift, others notice. It may be a trim in our bangs, new color, or a whole new style — but our hair makes a statement.”

Also, personal hygiene is keeping the body clean, and helps prevent the spread of germs. Grooming is caring for fingernails and hair examples of these activities would be styling hair, shaving, trimming and painting fingernails.

Introducing “The Buddy Circle”

The Buddy Circle is an easy-to-use emergency monitoring system with which you and a chosen group of friends or family can remain aware of each other’s wellbeing. It has been designed as an automatic daily check-in system, on your cell phone, at a time of your choosing.

Once you set a time to be notified, if you have not checked in by then, the system will ask you to check in at that time on a daily basis. If you fail to check in, the system will attempt to contact you two more times, at 30-minute intervals. If there is no response after three tries, it will alert your contacts that there is a possible problem. It will also provide your address and a Google map of your location.

The program is available now in English and Spanish in both the Apple and Android app stores. It may also be accessed through one of the following links:
https://apps.apple.com/ec/app/the-buddy-circle/id1547122634?l=en

Recommendation for Elva, housecleaner

Elva has been working for me twice a month since September, 2020. She is amazing. She always wears her mask, and is not only very efficient, but also a ray of sunshine. I pay for $20 for approximately 4 hours. She isn’t fluent in English, but understands a lot. I know there are some people who would rather donate that money to an organization, rather than to indulge yourself with a house cleaner; however, Elva is not someone who has her hand out, begging. She is a hard worker, and would rather work than asking for help. Please consider helping someone who will work hard for you.

Look no further than Kolo Restaurant and Bakery. This past week I had the pleasure of ordering (for home delivery) several different sandwiches and a selection of pastries. Delicious. The King Mahato sandwich in particular was superb. I could eat one of those sandwiches every day for lunch and not get tired of it. It’s that good. And the selection of pastries were all outstanding, especially the cinnamon buns and koloches. Good eatin’!
