The myth of the special check out line at SuperMaxi on Las Americas

Twice this month, I have had to wait in line to check out because a person ahead of me was not of the third age, was not having difficulty walking, and was not pregnant. After the first occasion, in the first week of April, I wrote a letter to SuperMaxi headquarters in Quito. I have yet to receive a reply. The second incident occurred tonight. I took photos of the person in line ahead of me. I also took photos of my receipt, which shows the name of the cashier.
I sent my emails to “”. If you have experienced the same thing at any of the SuperMaxi stores, I urge you to write to the aforementioned address.

On being an outsider…

This isn’t directly related to either Cuenca or to Ecuador, but it is related to expat life, and a good read:

“On Being an Outsider: Words by Charles Simic, Photos by Romeo Alaeff” at

“The advantage of the melting pot is that it undermines tribalism. One gains a distance from one’s own national folly. The American identity is a strange concoction of cultures, but at its best it is a concoction prepared and cooked by each individual in his or her own kitchen. It ought not to come in a package with a label and a fake list of wholesome, all-natural ingredients.”

Dear Cuenca Community,

Shambhala Cuenca would like to invite you to meditate together from your home this Sunday at 10:30 AM and any other time you feel stressed or depressed. There are many forms and methods of meditation – the form you choose doesn’t matter, however it’s a very good thing to remember our shared humanity as we sit quietly and become mindful for a period of time.

Get grooming appointment at C&C unisex hair design / barber shop

Talking about her, how often should you get your hair trimmed?

Unless you are growing your hair longer, with medium and long hairstyles you should be getting a trim every 8-10 weeks to maintain its length and style. If you are aiming for Rapunzel long locks, you can wait a bit longer to let your hair grow out, getting a trim every 12-15 weeks to help prevent damage from split ends.

Talking about him, the number of items found in a men’s grooming routine has expanded significantly in recent years. Rather than just relying on a few simple products and calling it a day, men are now finding that their grooming routine entails going to a barber shop, which includes facial cleansers, exfoliators, beard oil, manscaping products, manicures, hair cuts and so much more.
So, C&C cares about you routine care or if you are merely looking to be a bit more fiscally responsible – it’s a good idea to step back and take an objective look at your grooming routine as a whole every now and again.

The CosasPrep difference – personal emergency button

You’ve seen the ads for another emergency button. Here is the difference: When you purchase the CosasPrep personal emergency button, you have access to their service, or any service, or any other contact – without paying $40 a month.

The phone number for any service in Ecuador is essentially free. (You will always need to buy some minutes for your SIM card to make a phone call.) With our button, you can have a wonderful medical service on standby, and never pay for a service unless you use the service.

Below is an example of their button pricing:

“Month 1: You don’t have a heart attack and don’t push the big yellow emergency button. Congratulations! That will cost you $40. Month 2: You don’t have a stroke and don’t push the big yellow emergency button. Great – that will be $40. Month 3 through the rest of your life: You didn’t fall down and couldn’t get up. That will cost you $40 a month forever.”

Our plan: Buy the button for $299.50, and put anyone you want on standby, and we don’t charge a monthly fee. If paying $40 isn’t a problem for you, then you can donate that $40 every month to any worthy cause you choose, without paying CosasPrep a $40 monthly fee (forever) for having access to up to 8 free phone numbers.

Stop by either of our stores in El Centro to learn more.

Recommendation for Mateo Salazar, matriculation service

I have recommended Mateo before when things were complicated last year. While I know how to do it, I just didn’t feel like doing it. I asked Mateo if he would do everything this year, including looking for multas, all charges, etc. and then doing it all. He did this through his excellent English in WhatsApp and gave me a total price with a detailed list of all the charges, including his services. I transferred the funds, made the appointment, showed up at the house to pick up the car and it came back a few hours later with a new sticker on the window. I only owed $3.50 more for the delivery of my new matricula to the house. Done. It could not have been easier.

Mateo is kind, courteous, on time, and detailed and up front on all the charges that will be covered. I’m glad I tried and did (most) of it on my own last year to see how much value I got from him this year.
