Cuenca Municipal Water

Anyone else notice the tap water heavily chlorinated lately?

I’m down in EV and there have been some water main breaks lately. This is usually followed by a heavier than usual chlorine dose for a day or so.

I like the tap water here normally, but it’s terrible the last week or so. The water bottle I carry around reeks like a swimming pool now.

Anyone else?

Update on COVID Vaccines

Our Expat Services Center has been helping individuals register for the COVID vaccines. Up until recently, the system has been working well as individuals have been receiving text messages giving instructions on the time and place of the appointments. However, over this past week, there seems to have been some changes in how they are contacting individuals.

At the outset, the Ministry of Health, said they would contact individuals with a phone call and followed up by a text message and email notification. However, this past week, some individuals have just received a robo call with no follow up confirmation. For those who have challenges understanding Spanish on the phone, this has created some confusion and misunderstandings.

It seems that they are making these robo calls about three days prior to your scheduled appointment. We encourage anyone who receives one of these calls, and you do not understand the instructions to drop into our Services Center and we will try to confirm the details, so you do not miss your scheduled appointment. If you are unable to drop in to visit us, you can email us with a copy of the front and back and we can see if we can find out when your scheduled appointment is.

The Expat Services Center is a service of Foundation Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope). We are located at Mariscal Sucre 12-84 and Juan Montalvo. We are open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 5:30 PM.

Workshops for pregnant women – Fundación Núr

During March and April we organized a series of workshops called “Pregnancy and something else” for the pregnant women supported by Fundación Núr.

During the first three sessions we learned about the importance of breastfeeding, how the positive emotions and stress feelings of the mother influence and affect the emotional memory of the baby in the womb and the importance to take care of this for the mom’s and baby’s wellbeing.

We will continue to support these mothers during the first year of their babies’ lives.

Do you want to support any of these moms that are very close to giving birth?

We accept donations of cribs, diapers, clothes, blankets, towels and toiletries.
Please contact us.

Thank you so much.

Introducing “The Buddy Circle”

The Buddy Circle is an easy-to-use emergency monitoring system with which you and a chosen group of friends or family can remain aware of each other’s wellbeing. It has been designed as an automatic daily check-in system, on your cell phone, at a time of your choosing.

Once you set a time to be notified, the system will ask you to check in at that time on a daily basis. If you fail to check in, the system will attempt to contact you two more times, at 30-minute intervals. If there is no response after three tries, it will alert your contacts that there is a possible problem. It will also provide your address and a Google map of your location.

The program is available now in English and Spanish in both the Apple and Android app stores. There is currently no charge to the user.

Recommendation for Leo Duran, excellent computer tech

I was having trouble with my iMac ever since I uploaded the new Catalina operating system and Leo explained it all to me. He recommended that I go back to High Sierra OS and do a clean sweep of my computer after saving my existing file history. Being 75 years old and not a computer guru, I let him have at it. He did it all in two days for a nice flat rate for me with excellent results for a much faster computer. It’s like new again. Thank you again Leo.

Double D’s Menu for the week of April 26–earlier order deadline

With the Kentucky Derby being run on Saturday, May 1, this menu is a celebration of The Run for the Roses.

The Hot Brown is a hot, smothered, open-faced turkey bacon sandwich made famous in the 1920s by Chef Fred Schmidt of The Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY. It’s now also synonymous with The Derby so we’ll bring it to you in casserole form. Our homemade bread will be topped with slow-roasted turkey, crumbled bacon, and fresh tomato. A rich cheese sauce is blanketed on top then it’s all baked until golden and bubbly.

If you attended idiomART’s Derby Party in 2019, you had the opportunity to taste our Pimento Cheese. The 2021 version will feature Luvimar’s exceptional Gouda. Shredded Gouda will be mixed with roasted red peppers, purple onion, and our own zesty “dressing.” Eat it right out of the container with crackers, vegetables, or a spoon or spread it between two pieces of bread then toast the sandwich in a skillet to have a next-level grilled cheese.

Our Derby Pie Bars will feature roasted pecans and chocolate baked into a soft filling atop our shortbread crust. Bourbon and mint take our vanilla cupcakes up a notch to Mint Julep Cupcakes. In addition to being baked into the cake, a bourbon-mint syrup is brushed on top after baking. A bourbon-mint icing finishes this delectable sweet.

Hot Brown Casserole: $30 (6-8servings); $23 (4-5 servings)
Gouda Pimento Cheese: $15/lb
Derby Pie Bars: $5/bar
Mint Julep Cupcakes: $3.50 each
