Cuenca to Manta

Hola, todos!

Can anyone recommend the best way to get to Manta for just me and my 11kg dog? I don’t think she’d be allowed (or sit still enough) on a bus, and not sure what other services would be available, other than private driver. which I’m okay with that option, too.

To continue painting with our feet and hands… – Fundación Núr

These kids need your unused computer or phone.

Twenty-five kids meet to paint with me every Wednesday via Zoom. Their smiles and joy are contagious! Especially when they get to use their hands and feet to paint.

Sometimes they cannot connect to the class because their siblings are attending school with the only device in the household and we lose that special opportunity to connect and make them smile.

Do you have a used phone/computer or even broken computers that we can repair, or use as spare parts? Please contact us.

Problems with internet/phone/electricity/water/healthcare bills?

I am a law student at the University of Cuenca, I have finished all my courses and am writing my thesis, so almost-but-not-quite a lawyer. I can help you with any difficulties you are having with billing (facturas) for internet service, phone plans, electricity or water bills, coordination between hospitals and health insurance plans, etc.

I can take a look at your current internet or cell phone plan and see if there is a cheaper alternative. I am not a health insurance agent and do not represent insurance companies, but if you are having difficulties in communicating with a private insurance company and your agent isn’t being helpful, I can advocate on your behalf to get the health care benefits that you have paid for.

Internet and cell phone service providers periodically lower their monthly charges for internet packages, but existing customers must ask for the new, lower prices to receive them. Otherwise, the company will keep billing you at your originally contracted rate. Some Etapa water customers are suddenly receiving bills of $90 or more after months of paying the normal $12-$15.

Do you need an advocate to fight for you in the event of billing errors? Do you just need someone to call your internet provider to report outages or slow internet or to request that a repair team come to your house to check the connection? I am not a technology expert and do not troubleshoot internet problems, but can help you with dealing with the internet provider to report slow internet or internet outages.

Not long ago, I assisted a same sex couple to JEP who were having difficulty opening a joint bank account (the U.S. marriage certificate was not accepted). I accompanied them to the Registro Central to get their marriage registered in Ecuador, and we then returned to the bank to open the joint bank account. The constitutional law in Ecuador has changed but sometimes businesses and banks have not yet updated their procedures to reflect the new law. My law school classes covered LGBTI legal matters in Ecuador and I am happy to assist expats with LBGTI questions.

I charge $10 an hour, but if it takes more than two hours to resolve your problem, there is a discount of 20%, to $8 an hour (so four hours would be $32). If we need to travel in person to an office and a taxi is needed, that will be extra (but is usually minimal). Let me be your advocate!

I also can do coloring, highlights and other hair care.

Obligations of the insurance companies with the affiliate

The companies in Ecuador are obliged to comply with all the guidelines of the contract issued. If they fail to comply with these laws or guidelines, you can denounce in the Ecuadorian regulatory entity superintendency of companies, securities and insurance. This entity guarantees that the signed agreements are fully complied with.

Among the obligations that the company has with you vary according to the policy you have with the company you chose. In case of hiring a vehicle insurance, it is mandatory to provide assistance anywhere in the country, provide you with a workshop assigned by the company for your repairs, return your vehicle in the insured condition with your original spare parts in case of accident, follow up your payment processes prior to the cancellation of your contract for late payment, so you do not lose your coverage for non-payment.

Regarding health insurance: companies are obliged to notify you if you are in default before the cancellation of your contract. They must provide coverage for your emergencies within 24hrs after contracting your health policy, verify pre-existing conditions of the insured to avoid refunds and refusals. In case the client disagrees with their reimbursements the company is obliged to analyze your case again. If you do not reach an agreement, you can present your claim to the superintendency of companies, securities and insurance. This entity will make a new review of your case and will help the company to pay your claims as long as your diagnosis is not related to your pre-existing conditions that must be declared prior to the contracting of your policy.

Today is a great day to visit Nunkui gallery shop

Good morning. Many of you already know Nunkui gallery shop. We are honored to share with you the little knowledge we have of the Amazon and our eagerness to protect the tropical forest and Amazonian cultures: a heritage for Ecuador and the rest of the word. It is hard work, filled with challenges and sacrifices, but we love what we do and this give us great satisfactions and beautiful moments, along with the Amazonian indigenous communities and you, our customers and friends.

Our beautiful shop is full of the jungle energy, its incredible biodiversity, and its traditions. In Nunkui gallery shop, we offer pieces handmade by artisan women from different indigenous groups, who are made according to ancestral tradition. In your hands, you can have the Amazonian culture with the knowledge that it comes from fair trade with the money going directly to the artisans.

This week, we returned from the Amazon, and thanks to the willingness of the Waorani people and their “Pikenani” (old man leader), we brought to our shop a bodoquera (blowgun). It is a unique, original hand-crafted piece, used by Waorani men for hunting. We invite you to know it. It is priced at $80.

Also, today we have our excellent quality tenderloin beef, coming from healthy animals fed only on grass in a sustainable production manner.

We will be waiting for you today Saturday April 16, from 9:30 AM to 2 PM.

Looking ahead: April 30 – May 2 is a national Holiday/Inca Tours

Banks will be closed as well as government offices and some businesses on Labor Day Weekend – April 30 to May 2. Travel on state highways will be restricted, primarily at night from 8 PM to 5 AM. The restriction of night time travel is not just for Labor Day weekend, it will also affect travel this weekend and next with the hope of reducing the spread of Covid.

If you are planning a touristic get-away, plan ahead. Avoid night time travel. Get to your location early and stay inside as much as you can.

This is a difficult time to open a tourism service, but last month I opened my tourism business with a licensed tourism van – Inca Tours – and a licensed engineer/guide who can take you around Ecuador to see the things you want to see when you want to see them. He can also take you to the airports in Guayaquil and Quito if you need to travel.

Just contact me and we’ll arrange the details according to your desires. It will be a great trip. Bring some friends and enjoy your trip. Van holds up to 7 passengers with biosecurity (plus luggage).

Recommendation for Adrian Gustavo

Airport transfers, tour service, handyman, builder

Adrian built a walking path in my small front garden in front of my condominium in Cochapamba. He laid big red bricks in record time, evenly and very walkable.

Adrian is a trusted cab driver. He is on time for appointments; often facilitating an appointment for people. Airport transport. He has excellent knowledge of the country for tours. I have used all his services at different times. He facilitates doctor appointments. shopping, knowing from experience which stores have what is needed. Adrian replaced a part for my standard gas heater which quit on me after one year. He fixed the heater where others told me there were no parts available. Adrian is now crafting and building attractive wood furniture.

Kudos to the Ecuadorian culture where perseverance and hard work characterizes progress through learning, self-training and doing.

Recommendation for Jamie Armendano, custom made solid wood furniture

I wanted to recommend Jamie Armendano for making custom furniture. Jamie makes furniture made to your specifications. Show him a picture, and he will make it. We love mission style, and so far, he has completed a night stand and 2 long sofa/library tables. He currently is making an entertainment center, a lamp, and an outdoor dining set using wood that is weather resistant.

Jamie also replaced the veneer on two antique tables for us. His work is heirloom quality and is something that can be passed down. It is a work of art. He is a very professional person, has fair prices, speaks English and guess what? He is on time!

I highly recommend Jamie for any custom wood furniture you need.

Recommendation for Madeleine “Mady” Gonzalez, healthcare insurance

I was insured under Confiamed initially through another company, and had found the process of understanding EC healthcare to be completely confounding. And that wasn’t even with anything serious. After a month of just trying to get a doctor’s visit or two, I was ready to throw in the towel on EC health insurance and just go private pay, until a friend recommended Mady Gonzalez to me.

When I called Mady (who speaks perfect English), she impressed me very much as a medical insurance professional, and I decided to stay with Confiamed as her new client. Three weeks later it was all put to the test. I had fallen and needed knee surgery.

Immediately, she recommended a fabulous surgeon, made all my Dr. appointments, helped me gather all my paperwork, had her delivery guy, Luis, picked everything up from me at my home and the medical office, filed paperwork, was responsive when I didn’t understand something the hospital was saying, organized the hospital stay, told me exactly where I needed to go and when, stayed in constant touch through WhatsApp, and helped organize my post-op doctor visits. And I’m sure I’ve missed half of what else she actually did for me.

Mady became my guardian angel during this time. Completely committed to my well-being, she offered me freedom and ease during this upside-down time in my life.

Call her to understand all your insurance options. Don’t be left wondering what to do. She will serve you with pleasure and treat you just like family.
