The government of Ecuador has announced their plan for vaccinations. If you are 65+ and a resident of Ecuador, you can now register for an appointment to receive your vaccination for COVID-19. Once registered, the Ministry of Health will contact you with your appointment time once the vaccine is available.
Do you need help registering on the website? The Expat Services Center is offering to assist anyone – at no charge – who needs help registering to receive their vaccine here in Cuenca. Please send us an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) and we will get back to you with a time to come into our office to register. Many questions remain unanswered as to the actual date vaccinations will be available and what vaccinations they will be offering; however, the first step is getting registered.
The Expat Services Center is a part of Foundation Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope). We offer a variety of services to the Expat community out of this storefront, including bill pay, insurance, moving services, SIM card set-up, and more. All profits realized from this venture go directly back into our work at the foundation, which is to help those most vulnerable within our community. This includes providing medical support, food and accommodation to those in dire need.
We also operate Esperanza Thrift Shop, where you can purchase second-hand items and also donate anything that you no longer need to help us help others. You can visit us at Mariscal Sucre 12-84 and Juan Montalvo, where the foundation and our shops take up the entire corner.

I go walking at Parque Paraiso a few times a week – stunning natural beauty
last few weeks, one of the park dogs has identified me as a suitable human companion.
He sees me and falls in beside, trots along content as can be, just like other pets out for a walk
if I stop for a rest and water break, he plops down beside me and patiently waits, sometimes naps.
Street dogs here tend to want nothing to do with humans, and this guy appears to be one,
at the park every day, no collar, doesn’t look like he’s ever worn a collar, appears to be 2-3 years old, mid-sized, in good health, but does not behave like one.
The dog does not have an aggressive bone in his body, extremely gentle
happy to be greeted by anybody. Other leashed dogs bark and snarl and carry on at him.
He just appears amused and carries on trotting along beside me; not a peep out of him.
So, my question is: should I ignore the urge to do the gringo thing and “rescue” him?
He appears to be perfectly happy and healthy, not starving.
I’m going back to NA in 6 weeks, otherwise this pooch would likely be sleeping on my couch already. Anyone thinking of some furry companionship? I can arrange a meeting if you like.
Or, should I just leave him alone?

I want to express my heartfelt thank you to my Spanish teacher for all the extras she has supplied.
She has the patience of a saint as a teacher but has also helped me:
*conquer online learning (for safety during Covid)
*place phone calls to Spanish speakers
*understand local customs
*pass the driver’s test
*pass the citizenship test
*buy custom curtains and have them installed
*given me recipes for natural remedies for minor ills
*helped sort out issues with utility companies and others
If you are looking for a Spanish teacher who understands you want help living here – not just learning grammar rules – my teacher is the answer to your prayers. Here is her information:

Her fellow rescue went to her forever home a few weeks ago. Sky is sadly still waiting for hers. Great with kids, people and cats, Sky takes a while to get used to other dogs, but is a big beautiful mellow girl who’s been in foster for a year. Sadly, we have no room for a small lab size sweetie like Sky, so hope we can find her the life and love she deserves.
Young adult, white fuzzy girl with the sweetest spot in the middle of her tail. Do you have room in your heart and house for Sky?
Fully vetted, spayed, so gentle a toddler can walk her on a leash. Please be in touch. email or call, I’ll gladly send them and/or arrange for a meet and greet.

Ceramic sculpture classes
Artist Dogmos (a.k.a Juan José Cobos)
This type of course is more free (no experience needed), for those who want to create their own ideas. You can tell me what you are interested in and the class will be about what each person is seeking to develop. My focus is ceramic sculpture so I teach different modeling techniques with ceramics to create objects and sculptures, without the use of wheel or molds, only with your hands.
General Goal: Learn how to design or sketch an artifact or work of art, learn the basic building techniques for ceramic sculpting, to create whatever artifact or work of art that you plan on doing. Learn how to paint them with soil slips or glazes.
What we could create:
• Animal mask or every type of mask.
• Incense holders with faces, or patterns like feathers.
• Flute with animal or fruit shape
• Pipe of any animal or character possible.
• Plant pot of any kind.
• Vases with faces, or with any pattern.
• 45 cm height sculptures of any animal, plant or character.
• Ceramic dolls
• The options are infinite…
You can take four up to twelve classes per month. Each class has duration of one and a half to two hours. The number of pieces that you can make depends on the days you take. My personal recommendation is to work two classes minimum each week so you can work more freely and with continuity.
Plan A: 4 Monthly classes 1 per week. One Utility Ceramic, or one small Sculpture or mask.
Plan B: 8 Monthly classes 2 per week. Two masks or One large sculpture (45cm).
Plan C: 12 Monthly classes 3 per week for advanced sculptural modeling.
$156. You get an apron for free.
What the price of the course covers:
• Materials: Black, terracotta clay, slips and glazes.
• Basic tools (Part of the workshop goods).

How long does this program last?
It lasts three weeks.
What should I do to start my immersion program?
Before you begin taking this Immersion Course, you will be interviewed to know your interests in topics you would like to discuss and talk about during this course. You will also have to take a placement test, which is free, to know your level of Spanish, so we can prepare a lesson plan for you and your partners.
Will I really learn to understand and speak Spanish?
Sure, you will. We’ve been teaching languages, Spanish included, for almost 20 years. Your Spanish will be enhanced in record time.
How do I pay my lessons?
You can pay cash.
You can deposit or wire money to any of our savings accounts (Pichincha, JEP or Guayaquil)
You can pay thru PayPal with Xoom, a PayPal service.
What did participants say about our lessons?
“We got a small group of friends together who were frustrated in our mutual lack of advancement in Spanish after 2+ years in Cuenca. CCN’s approach to teaching, patience and encouragement has provided a fun environment in which to learn. In just a few short weeks, most of us have learned and retained more than other classes and online teaching.
We love our experience and look forward to each week’s class that is opening up a whole new world for us.”
“I am very pleased to recommend CCN’s Spanish teachers here in Cuenca. I have been taking private lessons from them for the past four weeks now and I continue to look forward to each new class with them. I am a naturally inquisitive individual and I like to ask lots of questions. I have previously taken group classes elsewhere but would come home frustrated, because I would rarely get the opportunity to have more than a few of my questions answered. The concepts I needed to understand were being left as a mystery to me. This is not the case with CCN’s Spanish teachers. They are amazingly patient and also very flexible. They always allow me to focus or redirect my private lesson toward the things I would like to learn. When I first met with them, they spent an hour with me free of charge, assessing my incoming Spanish abilities. Each subsequent class has been based on working from my current level and helping me improve. I really like the fact that they always type out our conversation on their computer screen AS we are talking. I am a very visual learner and when I can also see on their screen what we are discussing, it really reinforces the entire learning process. This also means I do not need to take notes but can concentrate on the speaking/listening aspects of the learning process. When I get home, the notes which they created during our class are waiting for me in my email inbox. Now how cool is that! I can go back over everything we talked about in class as a review, at my leisure.”
Should you have any questions, we’ll be happy to assist you.
We look forward to helping you out with your Spanish.

Recommendations from participants:
“Thanks to attending the language school “CCNations, Escuela de Idiomas” I was able to pass the Ecuador citizenship written and interview exams, and will soon become a naturalized citizen. With their homework materials and instructional classes, my level of Spanish increased to where I could study, learn, and pass these essential subjects: the history of the tri-color Flag (“la bandera”); the Coat-of-Arms Shield (“el escudo”); the National Anthem (“himno nacional”); the important battles, persons and events for gaining Independence; and the primary Presidents of Ecuador. These study materials include bilingual booklets and guides, flash cards, simulation tests (from the official examinations), and multiple practice sessions.
Classes can be scheduled on flexible hours for individual sessions, or with small groups of other students. Additionally, this private 18-year language school can also help applicants to pass the examinations to obtain a drivers’ license (“Licencia de Conducir”). This is one of the top language schools I have ever attended!”
Recommended by Bartley
“My success in passing the test on my first attempt was primarily due to CCNations, their time, efforts and patience in guiding me towards success. I really couldn’t have done so well without them. For this reason, I highly recommend this school to anyone who needs help with Spanish in any capacity.”
You want to study by yourself? No problem. Now, you can buy all our material…
1. A study booklet (in Spanish and/or in English),
2. Flashcards of Ecuadorian national symbols.
3. Flashcards of important people and dates, and some other information.
