Pet relocation service?

We are planning a move from California to Cuenca in July. We have a 22-pound furry family member (10 yr. old terrier) that needs to make the move with us. She is a little too big for flying in the cabin. We are hoping that pet flight restrictions due to Covid may have improved by then. Has anyone used a pet relocation service to help with the process that they would highly recommend? Any suggestions would be welcomed! Thank you.

Register for your Covid Vaccine at the Expat Services Center

The government of Ecuador has announced their plan for vaccinations. If you are 65+ and a resident of Ecuador, you can now register for an appointment to receive your vaccination for COVID-19. Once registered, the Ministry of Health will contact you with your appointment time once the vaccine is available.

Do you need help registering on the website? The Expat Services Center is offering to assist anyone – at no charge – who needs help registering to receive their vaccine here in Cuenca. Please send us an email ( and we will get back to you with a time to come into our office to register. Many questions remain unanswered as to the actual date vaccinations will be available and what vaccinations they will be offering; however, the first step is getting registered.

The Expat Services Center is a part of Foundation Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope). We offer a variety of services to the Expat community out of this storefront, including bill pay, insurance, moving services, SIM card set-up, and more. All profits realized from this venture go directly back into our work at the foundation, which is to help those most vulnerable within our community. This includes providing medical support, food and accommodation to those in dire need.

We also operate Esperanza Thrift Shop, where you can purchase second-hand items and also donate anything that you no longer need to help us help others. You can visit us at Mariscal Sucre 12-84 and Juan Montalvo, where the foundation and our shops take up the entire corner.

Doggie advice?

I go walking at Parque Paraiso a few times a week – stunning natural beauty
last few weeks, one of the park dogs has identified me as a suitable human companion.

He sees me and falls in beside, trots along content as can be, just like other pets out for a walk
if I stop for a rest and water break, he plops down beside me and patiently waits, sometimes naps.

Street dogs here tend to want nothing to do with humans, and this guy appears to be one,
at the park every day, no collar, doesn’t look like he’s ever worn a collar, appears to be 2-3 years old, mid-sized, in good health, but does not behave like one.

The dog does not have an aggressive bone in his body, extremely gentle
happy to be greeted by anybody. Other leashed dogs bark and snarl and carry on at him.
He just appears amused and carries on trotting along beside me; not a peep out of him.

So, my question is: should I ignore the urge to do the gringo thing and “rescue” him?
He appears to be perfectly happy and healthy, not starving.

I’m going back to NA in 6 weeks, otherwise this pooch would likely be sleeping on my couch already. Anyone thinking of some furry companionship? I can arrange a meeting if you like.
Or, should I just leave him alone?

Sky is still waiting and waiting…

Her fellow rescue went to her forever home a few weeks ago. Sky is sadly still waiting for hers. Great with kids, people and cats, Sky takes a while to get used to other dogs, but is a big beautiful mellow girl who’s been in foster for a year. Sadly, we have no room for a small lab size sweetie like Sky, so hope we can find her the life and love she deserves.

Young adult, white fuzzy girl with the sweetest spot in the middle of her tail. Do you have room in your heart and house for Sky?

Fully vetted, spayed, so gentle a toddler can walk her on a leash. Please be in touch. email or call, I’ll gladly send them and/or arrange for a meet and greet.

Ceramic sculpture classes (update)

Ceramic sculpture classes
Artist Dogmos (a.k.a Juan José Cobos)

This type of course is more free (no experience needed), for those who want to create their own ideas. You can tell me what you are interested in and the class will be about what each person is seeking to develop. My focus is ceramic sculpture so I teach different modeling techniques with ceramics to create objects and sculptures, without the use of wheel or molds, only with your hands.

General Goal: Learn how to design or sketch an artifact or work of art, learn the basic building techniques for ceramic sculpting, to create whatever artifact or work of art that you plan on doing. Learn how to paint them with soil slips or glazes.

What we could create:

• Animal mask or every type of mask.
• Incense holders with faces, or patterns like feathers.
• Flute with animal or fruit shape
• Pipe of any animal or character possible.
• Plant pot of any kind.
• Vases with faces, or with any pattern.
• 45 cm height sculptures of any animal, plant or character.
• Ceramic dolls
• The options are infinite…

You can take four up to twelve classes per month. Each class has duration of one and a half to two hours. The number of pieces that you can make depends on the days you take. My personal recommendation is to work two classes minimum each week so you can work more freely and with continuity.

Plan A: 4 Monthly classes 1 per week. One Utility Ceramic, or one small Sculpture or mask.
Plan B: 8 Monthly classes 2 per week. Two masks or One large sculpture (45cm).
Plan C: 12 Monthly classes 3 per week for advanced sculptural modeling.
$156. You get an apron for free.

What the price of the course covers:

• Materials: Black, terracotta clay, slips and glazes.
• Basic tools (Part of the workshop goods).
• Apron gift (just for plan)
• Place to work with all health measures.
• Clean and cozy workshops with plants and good music, with a funny little dog. Bathroom in the workshop.
• Firing in a private kiln.

Group 1: 8 AM to 10 AM
Group 2: 11 AM to 1 PM
Group 3: 6 to 8 PM

From Wednesday to Friday.
at Taller La Montaña en el Mar
Isabela St. 2-39 A, between Floreana St. and Española St.

The workshop has two main spaces to work in one indoors which has space for two persons to work and one outdoor garage with roof for the other two persons.
There will be space just for 12 persons; 4 persons each schedule.

If you take 12 classes the price $13, if you take 8 classes it is $14, and if you take 4 classes it is $16 every class. Every price is for instruction, materials and firing in kiln.

You can pay cash, bank deposit or transfer. If you pay until the 5th of April you get the early bird discount and every class will be $13, it won’t matter if you take 4 or 8 classes. Plan A will cost $52 and Plan B will cost $104.

April’s course will began on the 7th of April. Hope you can come and create great things.

Seeking information regarding Cuenca’s jogging/hiking trails

Someone recently asked me about jogging in Cuenca – are there good trails? I know of the trails along the river in the Puertas del Sol area (Tomebamba River) and along Primero de Mayo (Yanuncay River), but are there any other good, safe trails where someone might train for a marathon? Can you provide any details about these areas? Thank you.

Ecuador registered an increase of 2,214 cases of covid-19 in one day

Daily cases of Covid are rising for the fourth consecutive week, and although deaths are falling, they do so more slowly than in previous months, said the director general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who considered these trends “worrying” .

“They are worrisome at a time when we see how the variants of the coronavirus are impacting, societies are reopening and vaccines are still being distributed unevenly.”

Ecuador registered an increase of 2,214 cases of covid-19 in one day this Saturday, bringing its number of accumulated infections to 309,643, while deaths total 16,412, reported the Ministry of Public Health.

Regarding the situation in the cantons or municipalities, the Ministry of Health specified that the city with the highest incidence is Quito with 98,467 cases, of which 728 are new, followed by Guayaquil with 26,891, which yielded 203 additional infections.

Then there are cities such as Cuenca (with 14,519 cases), Loja (8,429), Portoviejo (8,040), Santo Domingo (7,615), Ambato (7,403), Machala (7,359) and Ibarra (4,641).

The problem is that Ecuadorians do not make good use of the mask or use non-approved masks. They care more about what a good mask costs than their own health. According to the World Health Organization, KN95 filter masks are still the most suitable to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

I am Andrés Guillermo, distributor in Cuenca and Azuay of KN95 masks with filter, made in the USA. These masks are not the ones sold in Shopping Centers, they are masks with sanitary registration, laminated and with high protection. Its use is comfortable, it avoids dizziness, headaches, fogging of lenses or glasses. They are lightweight and are placed behind the ears, but above all 100% safe and reliable. I sell them by unit or box of 20 masks. Contact me at 099 647 2877, WhatsApp or call me.

Immersion Spanish lessons

Immersion Spanish program
• Lessons are given Monday thru Friday.
• You can take three hours in the morning (from 8 or from 9 AM) and/or take three hours in the afternoon (from noon or from 1 PM).
• During this program, you will…
…learn topics of Ecuadorian and Latin-American culture, history, foods, arts, music, etc.
…learn to handle conversations in different situations, such as, giving directions on a taxi, shopping at different stores, making a doctor’s appointment, etc.

When can I start?
You can start anytime.

Where are the lessons given?
They can be given online (Skype or Zoom).
Can I come to the School in Cuenca?
Sure! We’re at 16-63 Mariscal Lamar, between Miguel Velez and Miguel Heredia. We’re in the north of Cuenca downtown. Just ring the doorbell at the door and you’ll be very welcome.

How long does this program last?
It lasts three weeks.

What should I do to start my immersion program?
Before you begin taking this Immersion Course, you will be interviewed to know your interests in topics you would like to discuss and talk about during this course. You will also have to take a placement test, which is free, to know your level of Spanish, so we can prepare a lesson plan for you and your partners.

Will I really learn to understand and speak Spanish?
Sure, you will. We’ve been teaching languages, Spanish included, for almost 20 years. Your Spanish will be enhanced in record time.

How do I pay my lessons?
You can pay cash.
You can deposit or wire money to any of our savings accounts (Pichincha, JEP or Guayaquil)
You can pay thru PayPal with Xoom, a PayPal service.

What did participants say about our lessons?
“We got a small group of friends together who were frustrated in our mutual lack of advancement in Spanish after 2+ years in Cuenca. CCN’s approach to teaching, patience and encouragement has provided a fun environment in which to learn. In just a few short weeks, most of us have learned and retained more than other classes and online teaching.

We love our experience and look forward to each week’s class that is opening up a whole new world for us.”

“I am very pleased to recommend CCN’s Spanish teachers here in Cuenca. I have been taking private lessons from them for the past four weeks now and I continue to look forward to each new class with them. I am a naturally inquisitive individual and I like to ask lots of questions. I have previously taken group classes elsewhere but would come home frustrated, because I would rarely get the opportunity to have more than a few of my questions answered. The concepts I needed to understand were being left as a mystery to me. This is not the case with CCN’s Spanish teachers. They are amazingly patient and also very flexible. They always allow me to focus or redirect my private lesson toward the things I would like to learn. When I first met with them, they spent an hour with me free of charge, assessing my incoming Spanish abilities. Each subsequent class has been based on working from my current level and helping me improve. I really like the fact that they always type out our conversation on their computer screen AS we are talking. I am a very visual learner and when I can also see on their screen what we are discussing, it really reinforces the entire learning process. This also means I do not need to take notes but can concentrate on the speaking/listening aspects of the learning process. When I get home, the notes which they created during our class are waiting for me in my email inbox. Now how cool is that! I can go back over everything we talked about in class as a review, at my leisure.”

Should you have any questions, we’ll be happy to assist you.
We look forward to helping you out with your Spanish.

– You can take this program for four weeks or for four months. It is up to you.
– This program is exclusively prepared to meet your needs and expectations.

Recommendations from participants:

“Thanks to attending the language school “CCNations, Escuela de Idiomas” I was able to pass the Ecuador citizenship written and interview exams, and will soon become a naturalized citizen. With their homework materials and instructional classes, my level of Spanish increased to where I could study, learn, and pass these essential subjects: the history of the tri-color Flag (“la bandera”); the Coat-of-Arms Shield (“el escudo”); the National Anthem (“himno nacional”); the important battles, persons and events for gaining Independence; and the primary Presidents of Ecuador. These study materials include bilingual booklets and guides, flash cards, simulation tests (from the official examinations), and multiple practice sessions.

Classes can be scheduled on flexible hours for individual sessions, or with small groups of other students. Additionally, this private 18-year language school can also help applicants to pass the examinations to obtain a drivers’ license (“Licencia de Conducir”). This is one of the top language schools I have ever attended!”

Recommended by Bartley

“My success in passing the test on my first attempt was primarily due to CCNations, their time, efforts and patience in guiding me towards success. I really couldn’t have done so well without them. For this reason, I highly recommend this school to anyone who needs help with Spanish in any capacity.”

You want to study by yourself? No problem. Now, you can buy all our material…

1. A study booklet (in Spanish and/or in English),
2. Flashcards of Ecuadorian national symbols.
3. Flashcards of important people and dates, and some other information.
4. 10 20-question-practice tests with answer key.
5. Audio of 17 interview questions (male and female voices).

You are not alone, Helping Hands is there for you

You are not alone. Enjoy your time while we take care of your groceries, medications, IESS bills, you name it. We get your groceries, your medicine or run your errands Sunday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM.

We all wear face masks and gloves.

We are already helping some expat friends, former and current Spanish students who are very grateful for this service.

Our service has 3 simple steps:
(Please, when making your shopping list, think of one or two week’s worth of groceries)

Step 1. Send us your exact address (location where you want to receive your groceries) as well as your shopping list (if needed, include pictures of difficult items to find) through email or at our WhatsApp number. (New: You can also place or tell us your order over the phone)

Step 2. When groceries are delivered to your place, you can either…
• Pay cash to HHs (Helping Hands) representative who will deliver your products and whose id and photo will be sent to you.
• Deposit or wire money to any of our savings accounts (Pichincha, JEP or Guayaquil)
• Pay with credit card/ debit card, Visa or MasterCard (some commissions take place)
• Pay with PayPal (some commissions take place)

In any form of payment, include:

• transport fare (from Supermaxi Las Americas to your place and from there to our place downtown), which is usually $4 or $5, depending on the place you live.
• $0.50/$1 for boy/girl (supermarket packer)
• Please, also include, a love offering for HH.

Step 3. HHs will monitor the shopping from the very beginning till you receive everything ordered.

“Good Morning. Helping Hands’ service was amazing. They are extremely kind and helpful. They messaged when they had a question and were very helpful! They did a great job getting all items that were available on my list and helped me carry them up to my apartment and were so thoughtful and everything was in perfect condition. Even the ice was still totally frozen! Perfect! Oh, yes, I am already spreading the word of your wonderful service and I so appreciate this help.

“We have used many delivery grocery systems during the quarantine. Like many reading this recommendation, we are in a high-risk group and just don’t want to risk going into a grocery store right now.

So, for what it is worth, we can wholeheartedly and enthusiastically recommend Helping Hands to do your shopping and all errands. They supply a very detailed set of instructions, which are readily available on GringoPost. If you put their name in the search bar on top of the page their ads will appear. We submitted our grocery ‘wish’ list and they told us when they would be shopping and who would be handling it.

During the entire process we were updated constantly, they informed us of items that were out of stock and sent us pictures via our smartphones of what was available as possible substitutions. They can do this via WhatsApp or whatever way you prefer. We always knew where they were in the process, they even told us when they were approaching our building so we could be ready with our cart to upload our groceries.

It was the easiest, most professional and safest shopping process we have encountered, here or in the States. They offered multiple forms of payment and even brought change with them. They fully disclosed all costs up front, and gave us the receipt asking only that a donation be made to the church to continue their work with the poor.

The minimum ‘love gift’ is suggested at $10 for households.

We were so impressed and grateful that we offered more. Why? Because they use these offerings to feed and support our community, it just seemed right.

It is times like these that you actually do yourself and our community a favor. There is a double benefit of employing a professional group to do your shopping and errands, who donate their profits to feed the poor in Cuenca. It is beyond a relief and it is a heartwarming feeling.

I always hesitate to give recommendations because sometimes success is fleeting. So, on Monday I gave them another assignment. My Instant Pot broke several weeks ago and I was able to find another supplier for it in Loja they were able to ship it to Cuenca, but only to the central Servientrega office. I asked and for a small fee they provided a temporary power of attorney letter, identification for the person picking up the package at Servientrega and delivered it to our home. So, two interactions and two successes. We will definitely use them again.”

“This is a top-notch organization that shops and delivers groceries to your door. HHs Team (Helping Hands) made this such an easy experience checking frequently with me by What’s Apps to be sure the products I wanted were correct. They also double checked with me several times while at SuperMaxi and the pharmacy with photos from the items on the shelf in case substitutions were needed or several choices were available.

They were thorough, pleasant, responded quickly to email, and items were delivered in full the day after I contacted them.

I will continue using them and highly recommend this service.”
Simply the Best.

“Helping Hands is a true gem. Their shopping service at this time is a lifesaver. They shop carefully and make sure your order is correct. If they are unsure or need to substitute, they will WhatsApp or call to be sure it is correct. They have taken care of our banking and bills. Trustworthy, timely, and makes the whole process easy and efficient. Do yourself a favor – make your life easier call Helping Hands. You won’t be sorry.”

If you have any questions, please, do not hesitate to ask.
We are bilingual.
You can rely on us on…
– paying your bills
– grocery shopping
– cleaning and housekeeping

You’ll be glad you did.

Arabica coffee, a superior quality bean

Arabica is considered the best coffee bean, since although it has less body than robusta, it is more balanced, aromatic and has a very pleasant acidity. Also, it has less caffeine than other varieties.

Arabica has between 0.8% and 1.4% caffeine, a far cry from the 4% that a robusta coffee can have. It is undoubtedly a subtle, delicate and elegant coffee with a great balance between flavor and body.

I am Andrés Guillermo, the only distributor in Cuenca and Azuay of 100% Arabian coffee, grown and harvested at 1,300 meters above sea level, in the province of Loja. I have roasted coffee in two presentations: ground and beans, 450-gram bags so that you can make your breakfast or afternoon coffee a delicious experience in your mouth. Recommendation for Ta’Lico, Chinese restaurant

After being really hesitant to try Chinese food in Cuenca we were so happy with our experience at Ta’Lico. The service was welcoming and we were really impressed with the cleanliness of the restaurant. We ate delicious dumplings and a few pork and chicken dishes. Everything was amazing and we can’t wait to go back. We are so happy we’ve finally found a restaurant that serves both authentic Chinese food as well as some “American style” Chinese dishes. We were impressed with the portion sizes and the prices were fair.

If you are craving Chinese food make sure to check them out.

Recommendation for Edison at Polylepis Tours

I highly recommend Edison with Polylepis Tours for any trips you want to make in Ecuador. He took some friends and me on a day trip for birdwatching in the Cajas National Park, and we had a great day. His vehicle was very comfortable, and he has what seems to be supernatural powers to attract and identify birds. He allowed us to use his scope to see some birds, if we couldn’t find them with our binoculars (which he furnishes if you don’t have your own). We saw several varieties of birds, and he also sent me the list of what we saw after the trip.

Recommendation for Freddy Delgado

Nebraska Steam Cleaning, steam cleaning carpet, upholstery, etc.

I called Freddy to clean the carpet upstairs in the house we are moving into. Freddy and his assistant came that afternoon and did an amazing job. In the time it took us to walk around the corner and have dinner, they had the carpets sparkling (if carpets could sparkle) clean! They left fans overnight to speed up the drying and when we came back the next day, we were amazed how fresh, clean and new everything looked, smelled and felt underfoot.

Freddy and his crew speak excellent English, charged a very reasonable rate for the amount of work they did, were completely trustworthy in the house alone and were there exactly when they said they would be. They have one of those big US machines that really powers through the dirt and great, helpful attitudes.

We’ll be calling them back – we have two dogs – and are so happy to have found a reliable, excellent source for the kind of things we can’t do ourselves.

You can email me for more detailed references, if you like, Doreen Dvorin, email

Better yet, give Freddy a call 093 937 9973. They can do your upholstery, drapes, carpets. I promise you will be happy with the results.
