How to get Covid Test before departure to USA (3 days in advance)

Hello, I am going to the USA shortly and am required to have a negative covid test with my name on it and it needs to be done 3 days before I leave or at least the date of the test needs to be no more than 3 days before my departure. If anyone knows where I can get a covid test and the results immediately, please let me know.

If you have experience with this, I’d really appreciate if you contacted me.

Thanks,

Nicholas

Visa waiting period

Hello expat community. I’m waiting for visa in Consulate of Ecuador in US, after my Attorney in Cuenca filed my paperwork to Consulate by the electronic system month ago and I got conformation number about it by email. But after waiting 3 weeks I called to Consulate and they do not see me in the system. Attorney advised to wait, just wait. Please any info about:1. How long approximately waiting time from date of conformation number (w/out app data) and get visa in US? 2. Does my documents correctly filed to Consulate in US or not to Ministerio Migracion in Quito and than Quito will send approved document to Consulate, where I get visa just by formal procedure? How it’s work correctly? Unfortunately I didn’t get any details from Attorney. I will appreciate for some explanations. G-d bless all.

Senior living

Most who read this forum probably know that, as far as I know, the first “Senior Living Facility” opened recently in, I think, Challuabamba. I took a look at the website, http://www.rioquinto.com and it looks like a lovely place and at $1500 per month for one or $2750 for two, it would be a bargain compared to what something similar would cost in the USA.

Of course, for someone already here, $1500 sounds like a lot of many given that you can rent an apartment and hire someone to help take care of you, probably, for a much lower number. However, if you compare the cost of assisted living, independent living or other “life styles” in the USA, it seems like a real bargain.

There are many days I ask myself why more places this haven’t come along. If you think about the 75 plus million baby boomers in the USA and how many of them are struggling, why hasn’t this become more common an alternative to the $7 or $8 grand a month similar places in the USA might cost?

We came here with the intent of creating a multi-purpose, residential community where people could live, play, and if they wanted to, work. For the first four years we lived in Cuenca, we worked for companies in the USA. The concept was simple: If you could work from home, home could be anywhere.

Just do it: Invitation to meditate with Shambhala from home

There are only two mistakes one can make in the path toward truth: not starting, and not finishing.

Dear Cuenca Community,

Shambhala Cuenca would like to invite you to meditate together from your home this Sunday at 10.30 AM. There are many forms and methods of meditation – the form you choose doesn’t matter, however it’s a very good thing to remember our shared humanity as we sit quietly and become mindful for a period of time.

Online meditation sessions are available at https://virtual-cushion.shambhalaonline.org
and
https://shambhalaonline.org/sunday-gatherings/

To practice online regularly with a group, you can also visit https://boston.shambhala.org/getting-started/

Contact cuenca.shambhala@gmail.com , and visit us online at cuenca.shambhala.ws and Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/groups/229033203881661

If you would like to use it, the form we use at Shambhala Cuenca is outlined below, and you can search “Donna Williams Meditation” for instructions on YouTube, or contact us for instructions.

***
Cuenca Shambhala Meditation Practice:

Note that times and practices noted are commonly used, but shorter or longer times are beneficial too. Do what feels right to you.

– Opening prayer or recitation.
– Seated meditation, 20 minutes.
– Walking meditation, 15 minutes.
– Seated meditation, 20 minutes.
– Closing prayer or recitation.

Start with an attitude of friendliness and loving kindness toward yourself. Then, if you’re able, take an upright posture, on a cushion on the floor or in a chair, with the spinal column vertical. Notice your body sensations and be aware of any feelings that arise (such as anxiety, tiredness, anger, passion, boredom, indifference, etc.). Begin to completely identify with your natural breathing, in and out, maintaining some awareness of your body/posture. When thoughts or emotions arise, taking you away from the present moment, you simply notice them, without any judgement. Simply label the thought/emotion as “thinking” and return to awareness of your body breathing. Sitting meditation is a practice of simply being, touching into your awareness of that being, and letting go without trying to attain anything.

For walking meditation, take the same approach, except place attention on your feet as they touch the earth, and your legs moving through space. Join the hands at waist level and walk at a speed only slightly slower than normal (see photo).

Traditionally it’s believed that merit is accrued by meditating. In Shambhala, we dedicate this merit to the benefit of all beings, using the closing text below. Feel free to use it, or any other of your choosing:

Opening:
“May basic goodness dawn;
May the confidence of goodness be eternal;
May that goodness be all-victorious;
May that goodness bring profound, brilliant glory.”

Closing:
“By this merit may all attain omniscience.
May it defeat the enemy, wrong-doing.
From the stormy waves of birth, old age, sickness, and death,
From the ocean of samsara, may I free all beings.”

Vision Statement
St. Christopher Episcopal Mission

In the future, St. Christopher’s Episcopal Mission (SCEM), in a collaborative successful partnership with Mision Sagrada Familia, will be a welcoming gathering place, a spiritual center in Cuenca and the surrounding neighborhood of a theologically humble group of believers worshipping God, meeting Jesus and demonstrating the practical love of Jesus to members, visitors and the poor.

Through action, SCEM will demonstrate what it means to be a follower of Jesus with a commitment to serve those in need by doing good works quietly, without fanfare or notice while fulfilling the question “what would Jesus do”?

SCEM will be a growing force for good in the community, known for outreach ministry.

SCEM, with the help of a Priest will offer Christian educational activities for spiritual growth through liturgical worship, group discussions, learning, and education filled with the Spirit of God’s love for us in our loving hearts and minds.

Visitors will experience Christ centered individuals within an inclusive, multi-cultural, bi-lingual, and multi-generational worshipping community of believers, with close bonds between members, committed to social justice while helping others.

SCEM offers an Episcopal liturgical worship service and experience to the community.

Sunday’s after 5 PM or anytime, free, YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOh2a0oDL3RwEEmrxHCcPVw/videos?view=57&flow=grid, Cuenca.

Ceramic Sculpture classes (update)

Artist Dogmos (a.k.a Juan José Cobos)

This type of course is more free (no experience needed), for those who want to create their own ideas, you can tell me what you are interested in and the class will be about what each person is seeking to develop, my focus is ceramic sculpture so I teach different modeling techniques with ceramics to create objects and sculptures, without the use of wheel or molds, only with your hands.

General Goal: Learn how to design or sketch an artifact or work of art, learn the basic building techniques for ceramic sculpting, to create whatever artifact or work of art that you plan on doing. Learn how to paint them with soil slips or glazes.

What we could create:

• Animal Mask or every type of mask.
• Incense Holders with faces, or patterns like feathers.
• Flute with animal or fruit shape
• Pipe of any animal or character possible.
• Plant Pot of any kind.
• Vases with faces, or with any pattern.
• 45cm height sculptures of any animal, plant or character.
• Ceramic dolls
• The options are infinite….

You can take four, up to twelve classes per month. Each class has duration of one and a half to two hours. The number of pieces that you can make depends on the days you take. My personal recommendation is to work two classes minimum each week so you can work more freely and with continuity.

Plan A: 4 Monthly classes – 1 per week. One Utility Ceramic, or one small Sculpture or mask.
$64.
Plan B: 8 Monthly classes 2 per week. Two masks or One large sculpture (45cm).
$112.
Plan C: 12 Monthly classes 3 per week for advanced sculptural modeling.
$156. You get an apron for free.

What does the price of the course cover:
• Materials: Black, terracota clay, slips and glazes.
• Basic tools (Part of the workshop goods).
• Apron gift (just for plan)
• Place to work with all health measures.
• Clean and cozy workshops with plants and good music, with a funny little dog. Bathroom in the workshop.
• Firing in a private kiln.

Schedule

Group 1: 8 to 10 AM
Group 2: 11 AM to 1 PM
Group 3: 6 to 8 PM

From Wednesday to Friday.
@ Taller La Montaña en el Mar
Isabela St. 2-39 A, between Floreana St. and Española St.

The workshop has two main spaces to work in; one indoors which has space for two persons to work and one outdoor garage with roof for the other two persons.
There will be space just for 12 persons, 4 persons each schedule.

If you take 12 classes the price is $13, if you take 8 classes it is $14, and if you take 4 classes it is $16 every class. Every price is for instruction, materials and firing in kiln.

You can pay cash, bank deposit or transfer. If you pay until the 5th of April, you get the early bird discount and every class will be $13 (it won’t matter if you take 4 or 8 classes). Plan A will cost $52 and Plan B will cost $104.

April’s course will begin on the 7th of April. Hope you can come and create great things.

April 7th from 8 to 10 AM, 11 AM to 1 PM and 6 to 8 PM, $64. Isabela 2-39A, Cuenca.

Mule/courier package from USA to Ecuador

Hi Expat Community, I’m offering a new mule/courier service from USA, to major cities in Ecuador, like Cuenca, Salinas, Manta, Quito, Guayaquil, etc. via packaged courier. Could be clothes, shoes, sneakers, lamps, spices, vitamins, kitchenware, pots and pans, etc. Or anything Legal. Please do not request anything illegal like guns or drugs. Unfortunately, no cell phones. Used laptops are OK.

This is how it works: you tell me what you need and I buy it after you deposit in my account or you buy it online and ship it to my address here in New Jersey. I’m a prime member on Amazon, but you can buy anywhere like Macy’s, Best Buy, Home Depot, Target, etc. Once it gets here you pay for the shipping and it will get to your city in Ecuador within 12 – 16 days for you to pick up. FYI in my locality there’s no tax on shoes and clothes, everything else if I buy in person, tax is only 3.5%. If you or I buy online, tax is 7%. I will send you a receipt.

To give you an example I just bought a house in Salinas and Cuenca and furnished my 2 homes with sheets, towels, smart faucets, smart front door locks, kitchenware, LED lamps. Any tech that you may not find or, is too expensive in Ecuador, I’ll ship it to you. I also helped my friends and collaborators with this offer for the past 5 years and I decided to help the Expat community as well.

If interested please email me or WhatsApp or text me. I’ll answer any questions or concerns regarding price, payment or any other questions you might have. You have many choices of payment in Ecuador via transfer or teller, to my account in banco del Pichincha or banco del Austro. In the US via deposit or transfer to my Chase checking account (You must have a Chase account to deposit cash FYI) thru Zelle, PayPal, Venmo. I will need your full name, your address in Ecuador your cell # and your Cedula #. The Ecuadorian customs requires this info, when your package arrives to your city. The shipping company will text you to retrieve it. Quick reply and tracking of your goods.

Now the most Important Issue you may have? Why should I buy it, ship it to his home and I’ll never see him again or won’t reply? I truly understand the skepticism and distrust, I’m here to help you, I’ve been here for almost 45 years. I own my home and rental properties here in NY/NJ and Florida as well as in Ecuador, I’m also about to retire back home in the next 2 years and I understand when I get down there with my wife it’ll be a bit different and would hate to travel back just to get some new tech or whatever every time if I can’t find in Ecuador.

With that said, I can only say that you can trust me. I’ve learned the culture of honesty, punctuality, respect to others that this great country has taught me, Thanks for your time.

Leaks, soggy walls, wet ceilings?

With all the downpours we’ve had in the last month, it would be no surprise if you found a problem in your residence – the bed is wet because the ceiling leaked; there is mold around a hole in your back room where water drips every time it rains; a wall has a big wet spot. These are just some of the after-effects one might experience. We can help.

At H.M. Construction, Emilio of All Trades, we don’t just repair leaks. Remember, we are the source for multiple professional resources: computer repair, installation or repair of fencing or heated flooring, plumbing, metal working, repairing walls, ceilings, roofs, or tiles, door locks, doing surveys, doing carpentry, making and installing window screens, and cement work. Just call to see what we can do for you. We can even remodel your home, making it more accessible, if need be.

Hope you’ll call me if you need anything in 2021. And if you need a driver, call me. I’m here to help.

A rural day at Bellavista. Sunday, March 21st

If you like nature and countryside activities, visit Bellavista with us, in our special tour. Our previous visits to explore this area were very successful. Now we offer a new outing for Sunday, March 21st. Don’t miss this experience with Mother Earth.

This visit offers you fun experiences full of history, traditions, landscapes, rivers, mountains, and organic gardens. Ideal for connecting with “Pachamama” (Mother Earth).

We begin with the Chakana or Andean Cross Ceremony, an ancestral ritual for the renewal of the spirit, a link between man and nature. After this wonderful experience, we will visit an artisan brewery, where we will learn about the elaboration of the “Cantana” beer, whose main ingredient is water from the mountains of the Cajas National Park. Includes tasting.

Then, Doña Blanquita welcomes us to her organic garden where we find vegetables, fruits, legumes, aromatic plants, or medicinal herbs among other varieties, where we will harvest organic products.
Next stop a place with height “the Mirador de la Cabaña” located at 3,000 m.a.s.l. ideal for photography, relaxation, and distraction of our mind watching a beautiful landscape of mountain and city.

Lunchtime, delicious food made with products from the garden, in a homely place and friendly people. Then we will practice the traditional game “el topeteo del sambo”, an ancestral game that was practiced for fun in some rural communities. Sambo is a vegetable grown in the gardens.
Last but not less, we will visit a private orchid garden, where its owner tells us how she dedicated herself to the planting of beautiful orchids while we tour her garden.

Includes:
– Transportation
– Professional local tourism guide
– Artisan beer tasting
– Lunch “from the garden to the table”
– Local souvenir
– Activities described in the itinerary

Rate per person $39
The tour will be confirmed with a minimum of 5 people registered until Saturday, March 20th at noon.

Not included: accommodation, extra food, travel insurance, tips, services not mentioned in the itinerary.

Reserve your space and enjoy a wonderful outdoor experience.

Hate to go out in the rain? Driver, facilitator available

It sure has been rainy lately. The rivers are full, land is sliding in many parts of the country, roads and highways are closed. Many people feel uncomfortable venturing out in the rain with slippery sidewalks, mud puddles, etc.

Wow! With all that happening, I wouldn’t blame you if you called for a driver (me) who knows the roads and knows how to get around obstacles. What if the road is closed – is there another way to get through?

Not only do I know Cuenca like the back of my hand, I also speak fluent English and can communicate your needs and wants to someone who doesn’t speak English – banker, grocery store, lawyer, doctor, etc.

Let me know your needs. I am here, willing and able to help you. I can drive you to your destination or appointment, or I can do the errands for you so you don’t have to leave the house.

Recommendation for A Pedir de Boca, organic restaurant

I recommend the restaurant A Pedir de Boca, located at 5-54 Benigno Malo y
Calle Larga y Juan Jaramillo. Owner, Chef and master decorator in the European style, has multiple dishes containing the best prepared vegetables this side of heaven. Felipe combines cut and steamed vegetables with every meal. I like his hummus with bread, and a combined beet spread. This comes with a salad. The menu contains salads, soups. specials of the day, and meals to go. HIs prices are more than reasonable but the dishes are usually huge.

The hours are noon to 7:30 PM.

I see specials of the day: Made in Italy on Monday, In Indonesia on Tuesday, Ecuadorian on Friday, and English Luncheon Saturday. Wednesday and Thursday, Free Spanish lessons for beginners and intermediates. You will hear about current holidays in Spanish. He uses a White Board to illustrate what he is saying, so you can read the directions. Whatever you can’t understand you can make notes for your studies at home. For beginners in Spanish from English, I recommend Spanish with Paul on the Internet.

Felipe is a decorator bar none. His collections of paintings, sculptures, plantings, dried plants for ornaments help describe the homeliness of the restaurant.

Don’t go away, your chicken soup and other dishes have chicken if you ask for it, has spaghetti and other dishes with a choice of shrimp and sometimes even beef. If you like some wine, ask for the plain white wine to go with your meal. I like the caffeine-free green tea and my friend prefers the coffee.

The tables are comfortable and seat 2 to 4 persons. More for a big party. Website: APedirdeBoca.Com/

This is a great location when shopping in this part of town, such as upper Calle Larga. There is Parcadero on Benigno Malo a few doors on the opposite side of the street.

You will find the big Cuenca bookstore open in the middle of the block on the same side as the restaurant. A few doors up is a good copy shop. On the corner is Arte Art supplies. Across Juan Jaramillo a few doors up on the opposite side is a wonderful shop with alpaca sweaters and ponchos, blankets and backpacks. Near there are shops with umbrellas, boots and raincoats. I would say this is a great neighborhood. Little known, you turn down off Presidente Cordova onto Benigno Malo. On that corner is a shop with radiating colors on the corner sign. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g294309-d7707801-Reviews-A_pedir_de_Boca-Cuenca_Azuay_Province.html

Recommendation for Transpo Ecuador, transportation

Recently, two of us made a 10-day, return trip to Olon with Transpo Ecuador. Jon LaBouef’s driver, Freddy, picked us up at the agreed upon time and provided a safe ride. Jon picked us up personally for the return trip. His rates were far better than any of the others and the service couldn’t have been better. He is our go-to guy from now on.

We have your safety in mind at El Mundo Orgánico’s “Gran Feria”

El Mundo Orgánico is hosting a “Gran Feria” at our store location on Tuesday, 23 March.

For your safety and that of our vendors and other “Gran Feria” participants, we are requiring everyone to wear a mask and we will have alcohol for people to spray their hands. We will also be practicing social distancing with all the vendors being spaced to meet these requirements. Your health and safety is of utmost importance to all of us here at El Mundo Orgánico.

Many of your favorite stores and sources, such as the Cuenca Shop, King’s Smokehouse (smoked pork products), Hoppe Café (organic coffees), La Mía (goat cheeses), and several new artisanal product providers will have many of their tasty foods and beverages for sale. If you are hungry, we will have freshly made humitas, tamales and a few other hot items available for purchase at the Feria.

Find our store location on Google Maps by searching for “El Mundo Orgánico” (not “Mundo Orgánico,” or you will end up in the wrong place).

To purchase items for home delivery, our full “Product and Pricing List” and “Ordering Instructions” are available on the Home Page of our website (www.elmundoorganico.com). In addition to many fresh, organic and natural fruits and veggies, we also offer a wide variety of very tasty vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free, sugar-free, gluten-free foods and biodegradable products.

Remember, if you have a special request for a fruit or vegetable (or, for that matter, any other edible product for yourself or your pets) that is not on our product list, please let us know, and we will do our best to find it for you.

Have a great day.
