To the friends of Kevin Johns

It’s with deep sadness that I write this message to let you all know that Kevin passed away peacefully on Sunday night.

Hi wife Tania—yes, they got married last year—has been helped enormously by their friends at the coast in this time of need. For those of you who were close to Kevin and Tania, I’m sure she would love to hear words of encouragement from you as well.

Kevin was the first friend I made here in Cuenca. He introduced me to my wife. She and I then served him and Tania a special dinner on their first date. He was a very good friend.

As anyone who knows Kevin will tell you, he was a bit over the top at times, but that’s what made him special. What they would also tell you is that he was a very, very, good man.

Kevin lived life to the fullest, and he will be dearly missed for a very long time.

Vaccine for Covid 19

Does anybody know what is going on with the vaccine for Covid 19 in Ecuador? There has been no updates and from what you read they were just given 20.000 doses and the W.H.O. was suppose to send 880,000 doses the beginning of March? Just wondering…

Calico Jessie needs a home

I cat sat for a friend on vacation and wanted to keep her until I got bronchospastic and couldn’t breathe. I knew I could not keep her but she was abused by my friend’s other cat. Jessie is very affectionate, although a bit shy to begin with. She will hide from visitors for the first week or so, but with a little petting will quickly claim your lap. She is very gentle and would do very well in a home or apartment with a single adult or couple, but probably wouldn’t do well with children. She’s waiting for you to call.

Please help my friend, if you can

Many thanks to those who have come forward to assist my friend. She still needs more jobs to help her cope.

Are your children having trouble with on-line learning?

On-line learning is a real challenge for youngsters and if they are English speaking with classes in Spanish, it can be even worse. Why not ask a real, live teacher to come to your home to tutor them? She has her own children, so knows how to reach a child.

My friend is looking for work from 2 to 6 PM She is a 42-year-old teacher with two teenagers who is currently earning a measly $200 a month. Her husband suffered from leukemia for a long time and has now died. She has to pay medical bills for him and is struggling just to make ends meet on that salary. Her children are in school and she works in the morning but needs a job in the afternoon to provide enough income for the family to eat properly and have the bare essentials, and to help pay the bills. She doesn’t speak English but is able to use Google Translate. She can tutor, cook, clean, and do gardening or other tasks around the home or office. There is nothing like having a native speaker of Spanish assist your child with their Spanish classes. If you can’t employ her for a whole week, even an afternoon or two would help and hopefully someone else could employ her the other days. If you have a heart to help, please contact me.

Problems with internet/phone/electricity/water/healthcare bills?

I am a law student at the University of Cuenca, I have finished all my courses and am writing my thesis, so almost-but-not-quite a lawyer. I can help you with any difficulties you are having with billing (facturas) for internet service, phone plans, electricity or water bills, coordination between hospitals and health insurance plans, etc.

I can take a look at your current internet or cell phone plan and see if there is a cheaper alternative. I am not a health insurance agent and do not represent insurance companies, but if you are having difficulties in communicating with a private insurance company and your agent isn’t being helpful, I can advocate on your behalf to get the health care benefits that you have paid for.

Internet and cell phone service providers periodically lower their monthly charges for internet packages, but existing customers must ask for the new, lower prices to receive them. Otherwise, the company will keep billing you at your originally contracted rate. Some ETAPA water customers are suddenly receiving bills of $90 or more after months of paying the normal $12-$15.

Do you need an advocate to fight for you in the event of billing errors? Do you just need someone to call your internet provider to report outages or slow internet or to request that a repair team come to your house to check the connection? I am not a technology expert and do not troubleshoot internet problems, but can help you with dealing with the internet provider to report slow internet or internet outages.

Not long ago, I assisted a same sex couple to JEP who were having difficulty opening a joint bank account (the U.S. marriage certificate was not accepted). I accompanied them to the Registro Central to get their marriage registered in Ecuador, and we then returned to the bank to open the joint bank account. The constitutional law in Ecuador has changed but sometimes businesses and banks have not yet updated their procedures to reflect the new law. My law school classes covered LGBTI legal matters in Ecuador and I am happy to assist expats with LBGTI questions.

I charge $10 an hour, but if it takes more than two hours to resolve your problem, there is a discount of 20%, to $8.00 an hour (so four hours would be $32). If we need to travel in person to an office and a taxi is needed, that will be extra (but is usually minimal). Let me be your advocate!

I will come to you, or we can meet in Cuenca. To be determined

Needless to say, I think she is great and highly recommend her!” Linda Chase, Cuenca

I would second the comment above about having had many massages in my lifetime and the fact that Jan is in the top 1%. I’m a retired medial professional and can’t wait for my next visit with Jan. Recommendation for Leonardo Loja Landscaping and Gardening

I am a plant person, that’s where my happy place is – especially these days. I looked on GringoPost not long ago and saw a rather specific recommendation for Leonard’s Landscaping, that intrigued me.

In the reference the woman said Leonardo had sourced great large, lush and healthy houseplants for her. I’ve read about gardeners before, but we live in a condo, so I was looking for someone who knew a lot about the care and feeding of houseplants.

Leonardo and I discussed my challenging natural lighting in the condo and after him telling me the Ecuadorean names for moderate to low light plants I took the plunge. the palms he brought December are doing great and growing. I told him I wanted big and that’s what I got, big, happy, green, healthy and pest free plants, Chinese Evergreens, asparagus ferns, palms, the list goes on.

Every single room has lovely plants thanks to Leonardo and they create a serene, calming, green space. He shopped for the pots I prefer from Coral, brought gorgeous black soil, planted them and told me how and when to water them, he even fertilized the plants. Leonardo and his wife are very nice, they cleaned up every single spec of soil and every time he had come over he does a plant inspection just to make sure they are placed correctly and doing well.

This humble gentleman knows all the nurseries, gets the best prices and cares that you are happy. I’ve been here for 7 years now and no one has ever been so professional, arriving on time, calling when he is delayed and following up with his customers. If you want a great gardener for indoor or outdoor plants, he’s your man. There is a reason he has been voted by GringoPost Best Landscape Gardener 2 years in a row.

Recommendation for Cuenca Muesli, manufacturer of muesli

I am fairly certain that you have not had an in-depth conversation about protein bars lately, if ever, unless you are an athlete or use them for snacks. Also, you probably don’t give much thought about them unless one falls out of the sky and hits you on the top of your head. And, if that happened, you’d probably rub your head, look up into the sky, look down at the protein bar and go about your business. You might have even said “ouch” or “WTF”. But, for the most part, it wouldn’t make a noticeable change in your life.

I am a retired athlete, and protein bars played a large part in my nutritional life at one time. I ate them all the time, and I had an opinion about most of them. My opinion was, they tasted like cardboard and were hard to chew. Frankly, thinking back, I don’t know why I ate them at all, other than “it was the thing to do.” Plus, eating those bars prevented me from skipping meals and gave me this sense of eating healthy, even if it wasn’t true. To say there are any fond memories involving eating protein bars would be an outright lie.

Fast forward to yesterday and a trip to El Mundo Orgánico. I was hungry when I arrived, and I noticed a basket of Cuenca Muesli protein bars sitting on their check-out counter. I glanced at them, but I didn’t give them a second thought until my stomach started to growl like a cranky bear that was awoken prematurely from hibernation. So I grabbed one (Choco Banana flavored), ripped it open and began to eat it.

My first reaction was euphoric— surely this was not a protein bar I was eating, even though it said it contained 14.87 grams of protein right on the label. I am not sure what all the ingredients contained in the bar are, but there are oats, pumpkin seeds, linseed, sesame seeds and a bunch of other things that when combined, produce a flavor profile that transcends words, or at least any words I have in my vocabulary. To say this protein bar is delicious is an understatement, tantamount to saying ambrosia is merely food. In fact, the one I ate was so good, I bought five more.

So, if you are looking for a tasty snack that has some positive health benefits, grab a Cuenca Muesli Protein Bar from El Mundo Orgánico. You will be pleasantly surprised and may even find yourself talking openly about them like I am.

Recommendation for Visa Angels, visa facilitator

Just got my permanent visa and renewed (new format with chip) cedula, all thanks to Jodie Mansfield and her assistant, Giovanni Vallejo.

Jodie and her crew are true professionals. They got me my permanent visa and my appointment in Azogues for the cedula order, and Gio drove me out there so that we arrived exactly as the parking garage opened, and we were in and out within an hour while other people, who had to go to the bank to pay their fees, had not yet returned. Gio had paid the fees in advance and had the bank receipt in hand.

Requirements change almost weekly for visa processing requirements, and because Jodie is out in Azogues multiple times each week, she knows exactly what the latest situation is.

Recommendation Kolo

Kolo is a pleasant surprise on the restaurant front here in Cuenca. Frank has left serving at Sunrise and ventured on his own. This is kind of a step above most restaurants, even having cloth napkins, water infused with mint on the table. I entered today first during breakfast time and it looked like he was fifty percent full. But for lunch, the place was quite busy. We had to wait a few minutes for a table. There are 4 tables that seat four, and 8 tables that seat 6. The menu for breakfast and lunch are attached. Frank does not want this to be a typical run of the mill place to eat. All dishes are unique, and the three that we had were very delightful. This is a full-service restaurant with all assorted beverages.

Your partnership guaranteed a success story

Today marks one year since the Cuenca Soup Kitchen was forced by COVID to close its doors at the Posada San Francisco. As a result, we had to develop a different plan to get aid to those in need. In the past year we have been able to get food and other items to over 120 families per week. And yet there is so much that connects back to our time at the posada.

This week we worked with Rosa. Rosa and her mother came to eat with us at the posada when they first arrived in Cuenca from Venezuela. Now Rosa is a marketing major at the University of Azuay and is poised to begin her successful new life here. She is already working to make life better for so many.

This week we built kits side by side with Miguel, a Cuencano who volunteered at the posada every day for two years. Jhohnny was also there. He and his family used the services of the Cuenca Soup Kitchen when they first arrived. Now he works hard to support his countrymen both in Cuenca as well as those who remain in Venezuela. Angel, who ate at the posada every day and always volunteered to wash the dishes, wasn’t there this week. He was busy completing the requirements for his visa so that he can continue to contribute to Cuenca, his new home.

This week we met with one of our dear local business owners and supporters who works tirelessly to help her community, in order to plan future programs. We also launched our
‘Change for Change’ campaign in order to provide bus fare so more people can get to the food that is available and we have other initiatives in the works.

These fine people work with our dedicated gringo volunteers, many of whom have been working with us for years…and we all have fun, we are family.

We have had to change how we do things but not what we do. We still care for people and their futures.

And all of this is done in partnership with you, Cuenca Soup Kitchen Volunteers and Supporters, Hearts of Gold Foundation, Club Rotario Tomebamba, and many other Cuenca organizations.

Thanks to you, the many donors and volunteers, the Cuenca Soup Kitchen is still getting help and food to the people who need them.
