Anyone who has used 911 for emergency?

I expect that someday I will need to call 911 for medical or police or rescue. If I were stateside, I could call and test the 911 system and explain that the call is for me to gain familiarity. I could do that here in Ecuador, but that would require a solid handle on Spanish, which I still do not adequately have for such an explanation, discussion, and understanding.

Rather than me having a real emergency and doing something wrong or assuming a translator/facilitator on the other end of the line will jump to my assistance 24/7, can anyone who has actually used the service please share with me any helpful hints to make my first and maybe my most important phone call to 911 effective?

Thank you in advance.

Meditation from home brings patience – Shambhala Sundays

Patience sees things in a way that everything can be joyful for you. ~ Pema Chödrön

Dear Cuenca Community,

Shambhala Cuenca would like to invite you to meditate together from your home this Sunday at 10.30 AM. There are many forms and methods of meditation – the form you choose doesn’t matter, however it’s a very good thing to remember our shared humanity as we sit quietly and become mindful for a period of time.

Online meditation sessions are available at

St. Christopher Youtube – Evening Prayer online

St. Christopher Episcopal Mission is a Cuenca-based faith community formed in 2019, as the first English-language Episcopal congregation in South America.

We gather online via Facebook and St. Christopher’s YouTube Channel, where you will discover new Evening Prayer services posted each Sunday. Our lectors, music and homilies are global. We invite you to participate! All are welcome at St. Christopher regardless of their faith tradition.

Vision Statement
St. Christopher Episcopal Mission

In the future, St. Christopher’s Episcopal Mission (SCEM), in a collaborative successful partnership with Mision Sagrada Familia, will be a welcoming gathering place, a spiritual center in Cuenca and the surrounding neighborhood of a theologically humble group of believers worshipping God, meeting Jesus and demonstrating the practical love of Jesus to members, visitors and the poor.

Through action, SCEM will demonstrate what it means to be a follower of Jesus with a commitment to serve those in need by doing good works quietly, without fanfare or notice while fulfilling the question “what would Jesus do”?

SCEM will be a growing force for good in the community, known for outreach ministry.

SCEM, with the help of a Priest will offer Christian educational activities for spiritual growth through liturgical worship, group discussions, learning, and education filled with the Spirit of God’s love for us in our loving hearts and minds.

Visitors will experience Christ centered individuals within an inclusive, multi-cultural, bi-lingual, and multi-generational worshipping community of believers, with close bonds between members, committed to social justice while helping others.

SCEM offers an Episcopal liturgical worship service and experience to the community.

New concert in the Digital Room of the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra

The concert, directed by the maestro Augusto Carrión Rodas, Principal Director, held on Friday February 26 at the Pumapungo theater is the next event that we will upload to our Digital Concert Hall on YouTube this Saturday, March 6 from 8 PM.

The repertoire includes: The Italian in Algiers, in C Major – Overture by Gioacchino Rossini and The Symphony No. 36 in C major, K. 425 Linz by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Augusto Carrión Rodas – Director of the Symphony Orchestra. Loja-Ecuador. His musical training was carried out at the Salvador Bustamante Celi Conservatory. He served as a teacher at the Cuenca and Quito conservatories, he was a member of the symphonic orchestras of Loja, Cuenca and the national orchestras of Ecuador as principal violist. In 1990 he changed his residence to Mexico, a country where he worked in the Symphonic Orchestra of the State of Mexico OSEM with which he toured Europe, China and the United States, Chamber Orchestra of the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico . He is the creator and founder of the Toluca City Council String Quartet and the Toluca Philharmonic Orchestra, of which he was the first Artistic Director. He was the conductor for 11 years of the Esperanza Azteca Bicentenario Symphony Orchestra and the Esperanza Azteca State Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Toluca Youth Chamber Orchestra.

The Italian in Algiers, in C Major – Overture by Gioacchino Rossini. Premiered on May 22, 1813, at the San Benedetto theater in Venice, The Italian in Algiers is a comic opera by the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini based on the crazy libretto by Angelo Anelli, which was not even original. In this overture, we find very catchy themes and with a great capacity to be retained by the public. It earned Rossini an extraordinary success, due to the combination of several elements: on the one hand, the originality and brilliance of the melodies; on the other, for using the resources provided by the orchestra to color and match the voice, especially on wooden instruments; and finally, by the rhythmic liveliness, which generates a continuous sensation of movement.

Funny, funny, witty, catchy would be few adjectives with which we could describe this great overture.

Symphony No. 36 in C major, K. 425 Linz by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The Linz Symphony, which opens Mozart’s series of the five great final symphonies, and which according to the same composer was written in four days during a stopover in the Austrian city of Linz on his and his wife’s way back to Vienna from Salzburg in late 1783 to accommodate the local count’s announcement, hearing of Mozart’s arrival in Linz, from a concert, certainly shows no signs of a rush. Only a genius like his allowed him to compose a work so beautiful in four days that it has gone down in history as a tribute to this Austrian city, Linz.

We thank our audiences for visiting the Digital Concert Hall on YouTube in which so far we have 45 concerts for all tastes that they can enjoy and share from anywhere on the planet to the time and as many times as they wish.

– You can take this program for four weeks or for four months. It is up to you.
– This program is exclusively prepared to meet your needs and expectations.

Recommendations from participants:

“Thanks to attending the language school “CCNations, Escuela de Idiomas” I was able to pass the Ecuador citizenship written and interview exams, and will soon become a naturalized citizen. With their homework materials and instructional classes, my level of Spanish increased to where I could study, learn, and pass these essential subjects: the history of the tri-color Flag (“la bandera”); the Coat-of-Arms Shield (“el escudo”); the National Anthem (“himno nacional”); the important battles, persons and events for gaining Independence; and the primary Presidents of Ecuador. These study materials include bilingual booklets and guides, flash cards, simulation tests (from the official examinations), and multiple practice sessions.

Classes can be scheduled on flexible hours for individual sessions, or with small groups of other students. Additionally, this private 18-year language school can also help applicants to pass the examinations to obtain a drivers’ license (“Licencia de Conducir”). This is one of the top language schools I have ever attended!”

Recommended by Bartley

“My success in passing the test on my first attempt was primarily due to CCNations, their time, efforts and patience in guiding me towards success. I really couldn’t have done so well without them. For this reason, I highly recommend this school to anyone who needs help with Spanish in any capacity.”

You want to study by yourself? No problem. Now, you can buy all our material…

1. A study booklet (in Spanish and/or in English),
2. Flashcards of Ecuadorian national symbols.
3. Flashcards of important people and dates, and some other information.
4. 10 20-question-practice tests with answer key.
5. Audio of 17 interview questions (male and female voices).
Contact us today and find out more about how to enroll in our citizenship program or how to get our material.

· …learn to handle conversations in different situations, such as, giving directions on a taxi, shopping at different stores, making a doctor’s appointment, , etc.

When can I start?
You can start anytime.

Where are the lessons given?
They can be given online (SKYPE or ZOOM).

Can I come to the School in Cuenca?
Sure. We’re at 16-63 Mariscal Lamar, between Miguel Velez and Miguel Heredia. We’re in the north of Cuenca downtown. Just ring the doorbell at the door and you’ll be very welcome.

How long does this program last?
It lasts three weeks.

What should I do to start my immersion program?
Before you begin taking this Immersion Course, you will be interviewed to know your interests in topics you would like to discuss and talk about during this course. You will also have to take a placement test, which is free, to know your level of Spanish, so we can prepare a lesson plan for you and your partners.

Will I really learn to understand and speak Spanish?
Sure, you will! We’ve been teaching languages, Spanish included, for almost 20 years. Your Spanish will be enhanced in record time.

How do I pay for my lessons?
You can pay cash.
You can deposit or wire money to any of our savings accounts (Pichincha, JEP or Guayaquil)
You can pay thru PayPal with Xoom, a PayPal service.

What did participants say about our lessons?
“We got a small group of friends together who were frustrated in our mutual lack of advancement in Spanish after 2+ years in Cuenca. CCN’s approach to teaching, patience and encouragement has provided a fun environment in which to learn. In just a few short weeks, most of us have learned and retained more than other classes and online teaching.

We love our experience and look forward to each week’s class that is opening up a whole new world for us.”

“I am very pleased to recommend CCN’s Spanish teachers here in Cuenca. I have been taking private lessons from them for the past four weeks now and I continue to look forward to each new class with them. I am a naturally inquisitive individual and I like to ask lots of questions. I have previously taken group classes elsewhere but would come home frustrated, because I would rarely get the opportunity to have more than a few of my questions answered. The concepts I needed to understand were being left as a mystery to me. This is not the case with CCN’s Spanish teachers. They are amazingly patient and also very flexible. They always allow me to focus or redirect my private lesson toward the things I would like to learn. When I first met with them, they spent an hour with me free of charge, assessing my incoming Spanish abilities. Each subsequent class has been based on working from my current level and helping me improve. I really like the fact that they always type out our conversation on their computer screen as we are talking. I am a very visual learner and when I can also see on their screen what we are discussing, it really reinforces the entire learning process. This also means I do not need to take notes but can concentrate on the speaking/listening aspects of the learning process. When I get home, the notes which they created during our class are waiting for me in my email inbox. Now how cool is that? I can go back over everything we talked about in class as a review, at my leisure.”

Should you have any questions, we’ll be happy to assist you.
We look forward to helping you out with your Spanish.

Cuenca Express, next trip

We will be leaving for Dallas on 3/28 and returning on 5/4. Drop me an email or call for details if you have something you want to send back to the USA, we need it before 3/27/21. This is going to be a bit of a longer trip so we can get vaccinated.

Also, just as an FYI, this might be the last trip for a few months. It looks like the airfares are doubling for July and August. Hopefully they will come down. I don’t know how I can stand not seeing my grandkids for that long..:).

Those who know our story might remember I always said I would have never come to Cuenca four years ago without our granddaughter. Now I have to decide how to stay here without her. The truth is that I would move back tomorrow but my wife doesn’t want to. Talk about a surprise.

Problems with internet/phone/electricity/water/healthcare bills?

I am a law student at the University of Cuenca, I have finished all my courses and am writing my thesis, so almost-but-not-quite a lawyer. I can help you with any difficulties you are having with billing (facturas) for internet service, phone plans, electricity or water bills, coordination between hospitals and health insurance plans, etc.

I can take a look at your current internet or cell phone plan and see if there is a cheaper alternative. I am not a health insurance agent and do not represent insurance companies, but if you are having difficulties in communicating with a private insurance company and your agent isn’t being helpful, I can advocate on your behalf to get the health care benefits that you have paid for.

Internet and cell phone service providers periodically lower their monthly charges for internet packages, but existing customers must ask for the new, lower prices to receive them. Otherwise, the company will keep billing you at your originally contracted rate. Some ETAPA water customers are suddenly receiving bills of $90 or more after months of paying the normal $12-$15.

Do you need an advocate to fight for you in the event of billing errors? Do you just need someone to call your internet provider to report outages or slow internet or to request that a repair team come to your house to check the connection? I am not a technology expert and do not troubleshoot internet problems, but can help you with dealing with the internet provider to report slow internet or internet outages.

Not long ago, I assisted a same sex couple to JEP who were having difficulty opening a joint bank account (the US marriage certificate was not accepted). I accompanied them to the Registro Central to get their marriage registered in Ecuador, and we then returned to the bank to open the joint bank account. The constitutional law in Ecuador has changed but sometimes businesses and banks have not yet updated their procedures to reflect the new law. My law school classes covered LGBTI legal matters in Ecuador and I am happy to assist expats with LBGTI questions.

I charge $10 an hour, but if it takes more than two hours to resolve your problem, there is a discount of 20%, to $8 an hour (so four hours would be $32). If we need to travel in person to an office and a taxi is needed, that will be extra (but is usually minimal). Let me be your advocate.

I will come to you, or we can meet in Cuenca. To be determined

The coronavirus continues to grow in Cuenca

Vaccines against the coronavirus go to Phase 1 in Azuay, in which not only health personnel will be vaccinated, but also other sectors of the population that are those with the highest risk of critical COVID cases. Despite this, the increase in cases continues.

According to data from the Ministry of Public Health, in the last week there has been an increase of 439 confirmed cases for coronavirus in Azuay, of which 343 correspond to Cuenca, a figure that worries the front-line medical corps.

This is the largest increase in the last 6 weeks according to the records of the Zonal Coordination 6 of Health, which fears that in the coming days hospitals will begin to receive those patients who may show critical symptoms of COVID, after having been infected during the holiday Carnival.

At the moment, public hospitals have an average occupancy of 90% of ICU beds and in private hospitals that figure reaches 70%, which reduces the operational capacity of the health system to face a new wave of infections.

The problem is that Ecuadorians do not make good use of the mask or use non-approved masks. They care more about what a good mask costs than their own health. According to the World Health Organization, KN95 filter masks are still the most suitable to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.

I am Andrés Guillermo, distributor in Cuenca and Azuay of KN95 masks with filter, made in the USA. These masks are not the ones sold in Shopping Centers, they are masks with sanitary registration, laminated and with high protection. Its use is comfortable, it avoids dizziness, headaches, fogging of lenses or glasses. They are lightweight and are placed behind the ears, but above all 100% safe and reliable. I sell them by unit or box of 20 masks. Contact me at 099 647 2877, WhatsApp or call me.

Delicious coffee in taste and aroma in the morning?

Enjoying a good coffee is one of the most common traditions in most cultures around the world. Coffee can be found in countless varieties, flavors, and prices.

There are two varieties of coffee trees, Arabica and Robusta. Arabica-type coffee is considered Premium and produces beans with the best flavor. Arabica coffee beans require very special conditions to grow. The coffee tree is highly susceptible to diseases and pests.

Once Arabica coffee is grown under ideal conditions, it must be processed correctly to bring premium coffee to your cup. Manual harvesting is important to ensure that only the reddest and ripest coffee cherry trees are harvested and used in the process. After being harvested, the coffee beans must be dried in the sun before being roasted by the experts.

I’m Andrés Guillermo, I take it to your home at no additional cost, I sell it in promotions of two or three bags at an incredible price. Do not miss out on the opportunity to taste a coffee harvested at 1300 meters above sea level, contact me WhatsApp 099 647 2877 or call me, it will be a pleasure to serve you at home at no additional cost.

I am Andrés Guillermo, the only distributor in Cuenca and Azuay of 100% Arabian coffee, grown and harvested at 1,300 meters above sea level, in the province of Zaruma. I have roasted coffee in two presentations: ground and beans, 450-gram bags so that you can make your breakfast or afternoon coffee a delicious experience in your mouth. Ecuadorian paradises. What to do and when to visit them?

Ecuador is the country that has it all in one place, we have an Andean forest with a foliage of trees and extensive fields full of lagoons in the city of Cuenca, located in the Cajas that has a natural reserve and protection of species of this cold and humid area that will leave you breathless when you know the “Toreadora”, a lagoon with magical stories of our ancestors.

If what you want is to know our little paradise in the Galapagos Islands, the best time to go is from January to May, you can enjoy a warm and sunny climate, but before you go check the weather in any application you have, because although it is sunny at this time of the year, you could also find rainy and cold days. In these beautiful islands you can admire colorful species such as blue footed boobies, sea lions, giant tortoises, adult and juvenile iguanas that are fearless and fast.

The Ecuadorian Amazon will enchant you, its humid climate, warm and rainy at the same time are the perfect combination to explore your wild side taking you to the most famous caves in Latin America, La Cueva de los Tayos, a place with ancestral stories and vault of the strangest findings made by a priest in Ecuador.

The Ecuadorian beaches have the best climate in South America and you can find a varied vegetation despite being lying on the warm sands of Ayampe, you can see a green foliage set with the sound of birds chirping from dawn, If you are lucky you can see other species of the area while you make a small tour of the beaches, you can go to Olon which is a small beach with good waves if you want to surf on your trip, or you can get to Montañita that gives you the night experience of a beach full of party.

Ecuador is the country that allows you to know it from point to point with little money, but do not forget to travel insured, so you can live all the extreme experiences you want without compromising your health and your joy. We have the best prices on the market, travel insurance from $5 per day depending your age.

Need help with tutoring, cleaning, anything?

A Spanish speaking teacher is available in the afternoons. She can work one on one with your children to make sure they are getting the most out of their classes. Or maybe you have some other need -cooking, shopping, cleaning, gardening, etc. She’ll be happy to help.

On-line learning is a real challenge for youngsters and if they are English speaking with classes in Spanish, it can be even worse. Why not ask a real, live teacher to come to your home to tutor them? Or, if it works out better for you, she could tutor on line using Zoom – she has experience with that. She has her own children, so knows how to reach a child. Sometimes all it takes to help a child is someone who is there just for that child and is able to focus exclusively on them.

My friend is looking for work from 2 to 6 PM. She is a 42-year-old teacher with two teenagers who is currently earning a measly $200 a month. Her husband suffered from leukemia for a long time and has now died. She has to pay medical bills for him and is struggling just to make ends meet on that salary. Her children are in school and she works in the morning but needs a job in the afternoon to provide enough income for the family to eat properly and have the bare essentials, and to help pay the bills. She doesn’t speak English but is able to use Google Translate. She can tutor, cook, clean, and do gardening or other tasks around the home or office.

There is nothing like having a native speaker of Spanish assist your child with their Spanish classes. If you can’t employ her for a whole week, even an afternoon or two would help and hopefully someone else could employ her the other days. If you have a heart to help, please contact me,

Don’t want to drive in the rain? Need facilitator?

It sure has been rainy lately. The rivers are full, land is sliding in many parts of the country, roads and highways are closed. Trees are falling – some even smashing things like the one yesterday in Puertas del Sol where several trees fell over on the bridge and left quite a mess. (Kudos to the men and women who worked tirelessly to free the bridge. They started around 4:30 PM or so and worked until almost midnight with just a brief break for a snack. It wasn’t pretty and many of the tree trunks and branches are still there, piled up around the intersection but allowing cars and pedestrians free travel).

Wow! With all that happening, I wouldn’t blame you if you called for a driver (me) who knows the roads and knows how to get around obstacles. What if the road is closed – is there another way to get through?

Not only do I know Cuenca like the back of my hand, I also speak fluent English and can communicate your needs and wants to someone who doesn’t speak English – banker, grocery store, lawyer, doctor, car rental agency (oh, the guy that owns Cuenca Car Share (me), does speak English – no facilitator required there.

Let me know your needs. I am here, willing and able to help you.

Changes have been implemented in the new “ley organica de Movilidad”

Changes have been implemented in the new “Ley Orgánica Reformatoria de La Ley Orgánica de Movilidad Humana” approved on February 5th, 2021 by the National Assembly.

Some of the most relevant changes that affect those who are considering living in the country or who already live in it are the following:

Temporary and permanent residents

People must be subject to the activity dictated by their visa. That is, if a person applied for a retiree visa, that person will not be able to carry out any commercial activity, give classes or any other economical activity. In case of carrying out activities other than those dictated by your visa, there will be a penalty of a basic salary ($400). In case of being a repeat offender, the immigration status will be revoked and two years will be penalized in order to obtain a visa.

The person who has not changed their immigration status in the time provided by law, that is, who, for example, has an investor visa and is carrying out economic activities in Ecuador, and does not change the category of their visa, will be sanctioned by average unified base salary ($200).

The person permanently residing in the country may not be absent from it for more than 180 days per year, from the date of obtaining their visa and in the event that they are absent, they will be sanctioned with 50% of the unified basic salary ($200).

This means that it does not matter how many years you are living in the country, since the maximum allowed currently is 180 days per year.

In the case of foreigners who entered the country under tourist immigration status, with a stay of 90 days and exceeded that time without requesting an extension, or those who requested an extension and have exceeded 180 days, will not be allowed to enter the country through the period of one year from the date of your departure from Ecuador, unless you cancel a fine equivalent to a unified basic salary ($400) and obtain your respective consular visa. From the date of departure from the country, a year will be counted for the sanction to prescribe.

Now to make your visa extension “prorroga” must be done before the 90th day otherwise the Government of the interio (Inmigration Office) will proceed to fine to people who overstayed in the country, people who try to make their visa extension after the 90th day. Please be careful on this. This will be effective from May 5th

Recommendation for Sebastian Cardenas, licensed tour guide

My husband and I have been out touring with Sebastian three times. He is a professional tour guide, with a degree from the University of Cuenca. Part of his education was to live in many of the places that are popular to visit within Ecuador. He speaks and writes English really well. HIs knowledge of Ecuador and Cuenca are extensive. He really takes his job seriously and always wants to give as much information as he can. History, plants, birds, geography food neighborhoods, architecture…. he’s ready to talk.

He is also just a great person; we enjoy his company and conversation so much. He takes care of all details that are important for safety and irregularities because of covid. Also, he will put together itineraries if you like, with different options and cost. We just can’t say enough….

Recommendation for Franklin Armando Morocho, repair service/metal working

Washing dishes yesterday, I heard a clunk under the sink and my faucet began to dance a jig. I was afraid it was going to disconnect and give me an unwanted shower. At the same time, I discovered that with the heavy rain, there was a leak in my back patio. I called Franklin. Within 2 hours, despite the heavy rain and trees that had fallen over a nearby road causing tremendous traffic backups, he was at my house. He investigated both items and was able to provide a remedy – he had to machine two screws to hold the faucet in place and find a metal sheet to deflect the rain and stop the leak. I figured this would take until Saturday, but at 2:15 today he was at the door with the screws and metal sheet. Now this is not an ordinary faucet and screws are not readily available, so he had to take metal bolts of the right size and thread them so they would fit into the faucet. No problem for a master metal worker! In less than 24 hours, my faucet is working again and the roof is no longer leaking! Thank you, Franklin. BTW – Franklin is totally honest and reliable. He has repaired portions of the house for us over the last 8 years. Recommended for fast, efficient, cost-effective service.

Recommendation for Kolo, restaurant/bakery

Frank Gonzalez has hit a home run with his new restaurant/bakery.

Kolo is on the second floor of Hotel Vieja Mansion a beautiful patrimonial bldg. with tons of natural light from a huge skylight in the ceiling. The walk up the one flight of stairs is worth every step once you smell the fresh baked breads, rolls, and the signature Koloche a brioche type of pastry filled with a variety of fresh homemade preserves.

Greeted by a friendly staff and served a pitcher of water infused with cucumber, mint and lime you are quickly made to feel at home while being given a small sampling of the wonderful pastries while waiting for your food to arrive.

Kolo has a breakfast and lunch menu with breakfast house specialties that range from Prosciutto Parmesan Scramble to the more traditional fare of bacon & eggs.
Lunch specials include a pressed classic Cuban sandwich and the best Shepherd’s Pie since my mom’s.

There are ample choices (10 on each breakfast and lunch menu) to satisfy varied tastes and vegetarian options are available.

I’ve had both breakfast and lunch at this wonderful new environment and can’t wait to return.

Organic herbal plants available from “El Mundo Organico”

How would you like to add your very own live organic herbal plants to your “Build-Your-Own Basket” order?

Grow your own organic herbs to have them fresh when you need them without the waste from left over herbs you buy in a store. We can provide live organic herb plants, ready for you to transplant into your own terrace garden or to grow on your kitchen windowsill.

The plants, which sell for $3 each, include rosemary, oregano, thyme, peppermint, spearmint, and parsley. (Sorry, basil is not available.) If you are interested in growing another live herbal plant (chives, cilantro, etc.), please let us know. We even have a colorful and decorative selection of planters and small pots (ranging in price from $3 to $5) in which you can plant them.

And don’t forget! This week we received more freshly prepared horseradish (2 oz. bottles) for only $6.50 per bottle (limited supply).

On the “Product and Price List” available on the Home Page of our website, you will not only find many fresh, organic or natural fruits and veggies from which to choose for your “Build-Your-Own Basket”, but also a wide variety of very tasty vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free, sugar-free, gluten-free foods and biodegradable products.

Our full “Product and Pricing List” and “Ordering Instructions” can be found on the Home Page of our website,

Orders are currently accepted only via emails sent to and via “What’s App” texts to 093 906 2640. You may place orders for pick-up at our store location or for home delivery. There is no delivery charge for orders of $17 or more.

Find our store location on Google Maps by searching for “El Mundo Orgánico” (not “Mundo Orgánico,” or you will end up in the wrong place).

Remember, if you have a special request for a fruit or vegetable (or, for that matter, any other edible product for yourself or your pets) that is not on our product list, please let us know, and we will do our best to find it for you.

Have a great day.
