Move for health (post 6) from DEFY

Last time we discussed some of the basic ways exercise can improve our health and quality of life. This week we’ll examine how it can prevent some of the more serious health problems.

Regular exercise can help protect us from the following health issues:

Peripheral Vascular Disease. (https://tinyurl.com/yk2vd8gj). This is the narrowing or blockage of the blood vessels outside of the heart and brain.

High Blood Pressure. Physical activity reduces body fat, which is associated with high blood pressure.

Obesity. When exercise is combined with proper nutrition it can help control weight and prevent obesity which is itself a major risk factor for many diseases.

Digestive problems. Regular movement and activity gently massage our internal organs including our digestive system, making for improved digestion.

Lymphoedema. (tinyurl.com/77hy97ym). This is a swelling of tissues in our body because of the
Lymphatic System not working properly. The Lymphatic System is a vital “waste disposal system” in the body, and it depends on exercise to work properly.

Back pain. Regular exercise helps prevent back pain by increasing muscle strength and endurance and improving flexibility and posture.

Osteoporosis. Regular weight-bearing exercise increases bone density and may prevent many forms of bone loss associated with aging. For example, by not doing the right type of exercises we will lose 6% of the mineral mass in our bones every 10 years, after the age of 40.

Disability. Aerobic exercise and running have been demonstrated to delay the development of disability in older adults.

Cognitive degeneration. Being physically active on a regular basis improves cognitive function among older adults.

Death. No, exercising will not prevent death forever. But it will increase our chances of living longer. If we are physically active for about 7 hours a week, we’ll have a 40% lower risk of dying early than people who are active for less than 30 minutes a week. People who are at a healthy weight and are physically active live about 7 years longer than those who are obese and not active.

Based on all the preceding evidence, would you agree that the human body was definitely made to move?

*In fact, it wasn’t just designed to move. It was designed to move vigorously. Next week, we’ll look at the evidence. *
