Flying back to the States with my pet

Hello Everyone,

I hope I can find some answers through here. I’m heading back home to New Jersey in two months or so and I would like to know the restrictions regarding traveling with a pet.

Now keep in mind my dog is a service dog.

I’ve been told they are no longer allowed to travel on aircraft cabin. Is this true? Does this apply to service dogs?

Honestly any information regarding this subject would be wonderful. Calling the airline is one thing but if I could get advice from someone who has traveled with their pets already during this pandemic that would be great too.

Thank you in advance for any information.

US Skype phone number

Hi all,

Does the below sound correct, or am I missing something?

I’ve never had a smartphone. I plan on buying an Android smartphone in Cuenca. Then I’d download the Skype app and purchase a US Skype phone number. Then friends and family in the US can call my US Skype number and it’d ring on my smartphone in Cuenca and I’d pick up on the Skype app.

Also, I have no desire to have a local Ecuador phone number as I use email for communication here. Thus, is it true that I won’t need a phone chip (SIM card), rather my smartphone will simply connect to the Internet via WiFi, in order for my smartphone to ring, and in order for me to pick up the call on the Skype app?

Thank you for any input,

Paulina Urgiles needs our help

Many of you know Paulina, who is finishing law school at the University of Cuenca and will be graduating mid-2021. Like many, she has been struggling to support herself and has been cutting hair and helping people resolve billing or financial problems. She is weighed down by medical debt owed to IESS that is keeping her from moving forward with her life.

Paulina’s dream is to start a pro bono law practice defending the vulnerable members of society, specializing in LBGTI persons suffering discrimination, physical attacks or even death. Ecuador’s constitution guarantees equal rights to all, but the reality on the ground is quite different. Paulina would like to make the reality match the ideals written in law but not enforced.

During the quarantine Paulina organized a food drive for vulnerable persons with no other means of finding food, and helped distribute food parcels to people in need.

I have established a GoFundMe page for Paulina at where you can make a donation. Her debt is over $20,000 but any amount will help Paulina in paying down the debt to IESS. The GoFundMe page has more details about the situation here in Ecuador for LBGTI persons.

Paulina is a neighbor of mine and I have gotten to know her well over the past year through the quarantine.

If you wish to contact Paulina directly her email address is and her phone number is 098 890 7549.

Movies and dinner in La Guarida

After a very short break, we are back. Our films this week are beautifully diverse and emotionally touching. We start on Tuesday with “Honeyland” an inspiring documentary from Macedonia. This award-winning film shows why nature, especially bees are so precious and important for us. It is a perfect window into the lives and struggles of others, of nature and helps us understand how magnificent and complex bees are.

On Wednesday, we show one of the greatest films in history: “The Grapes of Wrath.” A story written into eternity by John Steinbeck. This very important classic is brought to life by film director John Ford with a perfect cast which includes an outstanding Henry Fonda.

Reservations with dinner requests are required. Doors open at 5:30 PM. Film begins at 6:45 PM.

Make your reservations by calling 099 806 8071.

You may take the Tranvia to La Cuadra Station. We are just a few meters away.

Looking for real estate deal; land, hotel or retreat center (10-20HA+)

Hello Expats.

I’m looking for 10+ hectares of raw or developed land.

I prefer the Cuenca area, but will consider any place near a major city, but it must be no more than 90 minutes away from an airport.

I’m in no rush, so I’ll only consider a fire-sale or a very good deal, but I can close quickly and would even be willing to pay a referral fee for a truly excellent deal.

– 10 hectares +
– Must have paved road access
– Water, electricity & internet available

I’m not interested in properties that are already listed on the internet.

*** No condos or houses on small land.

Urgent – Reliable lady seeks part time employment assistance

My friend is looking for work from 2 to 6 PM. She is a 42-year old teacher with two teenagers who is currently earning a measly $200 a month. Her husband suffered from leukemia for a long time and has now died. She has to pay medical bills for him and is struggling just to make ends meet on that salary. Her children are in school and she works in the morning but needs a job in the afternoon to provide enough income for the family to eat properly and have the bare essentials, and to help pay the bills. She doesn’t speak English but is able to use Google Translate.

She can cook, teach, clean, and do gardening or other tasks around the home or office. If you can’t employ her for a whole week, even an afternoon or two would help and hopefully someone else could employ her the other days. If you have a heart to help, please contact me. She has her own home, so is not looking for a place to live – she needs an income producing position.

Thank you.

Do you like coffee with a high aroma and flavor?

This post is for you.

Arabica coffee is considered a much more select and refined grain than the rest. True coffee lovers always tend to choose this variety, rather than a more earthy and robust bean.

I am Andrés Guillermo, the only distributor in Cuenca and Azuay of 100% Arabian coffee, grown and harvested at 1,300 meters above sea level, in the province of Zaruma. Second wave of coronavirus threatens Cuenca

The Ministry of Public Health (MSP) issued its report on the situation of the pandemic in Ecuador. The institution reported that 86.95% of the patients with a confirmed PCR test have recovered, with a total of 238,817 people.

The MSP reported 1,219 hospitalized patients nationwide: 729 are stable and 490 have a reserved prognosis. A hospitalized patient with a reserved prognosis has decreased in the last 24 hours.

Until today, the deaths related to COVID-19 amounted to 15,536 (23 more than yesterday): 10,796 confirmed deaths due to the virus and 4,740 probable.

The country faces the second wave of hospitalizations due to the virus, since the pandemic began in March 2020 and several hospitals have reported the collapse of their beds in intensive care units.

The best way to protect yourself, according to the World Health Organization is to use KN95 masks with a valve, the only ones that truly protect and do not allow any contaminated particles to leak out.

I am Andrés Guillermo, authorized distributor for Cuenca and Azuay of these masks, imported from the USA, comfortable, light, adaptable to any face, their use does not cloud the lenses, they can be used by children or adults. I sell them by unit or by box of 20 units. Laminated to avoid manipulation. Contact me WhatsApp 099 647 2877 or call me. Free home service.

Rainy weather driving

Driving in the rain is totally different than driving on dry roads. Many of you know that. While trying to get to their destination in the rain, people may drive more dangerously, too.

Hi, I’m Emilio. Many of you already know me. I am an experienced driver with extensive knowledge of Cuenca and Ecuador. I’m available for short or long drives. I have a variety of vehicles available from a taxi to a small car to an SUV – whatever makes you comfortable. No matter the size of the car, due to Covid restrictions, I will only take 3 passengers duly equipped with sanitary precautions. My vehicle will be sanitized and I will have my mask in place. Bring your water, hand sanitizer, and anything that will make you comfortable for the duration of our journey. Your safety is my priority.

Contact me soon to set up your travel dates. Thank you.

Not only am I a safe driver, I am also a skilled facilitator. I have facilitated for many expats here in Cuenca and around Ecuador. My skills include translating for doctors, in the hospital, helping resolve issues with banks, paying bills, and shopping. If you want references, just ask me – I have lots of them. It has been more than 5 years since we started selling in the local market. We always offer you high quality roses, because you deserve that. Cacao Farm and chocolate tasting with a visit to Jubones desert

Experience the contrast between the green highlands, dry desert, and the dense tropical area. Departing from Cuenca, after an 85km scenic drive through the high Andes and the Yunguilla Valley, we will reach the Jubones. This is a unique desert with an oasis crossed by a river where locals grow different kinds of crops. We will have the chance to explore this very interesting geological formation which is the deposit of giant volcanic eruptions that occurred 25 million years ago.

For those who like biking, it’s possible to add this activity for an extra cost. We will ride our bikes on a dirt road with very little traffic and beautiful views. We will cover a distance of 4 km, 75% of the ride will be down the hill but not steep (180 meters of altitude loss). Anybody with very basic riding experience can do it.

We will continue driving for about 35 km to the Hacienda La Cortadera. We will immerse ourselves in a tropical farm experience. The family will welcome us with a delicious fresh homemade lunch.

Ever tasted the pulp of fresh cacao beans? You will learn and experience hands-on cacao harvest and the process of craft chocolate making, from the tree to a delicious cup of hot chocolate all alongside a professional tour guide that will explain and teach you about the history of cacao. We will also have a chocolate tasting experience.

Before we head back to Cuenca it’s possible to relax in the pool or stroll along the trails of the farm where you will be able to spot some tropical birds and taste a wide variety of the hacienda fruits and products.

Recommendation for Annabel CuervoHome care RN, home care RN

As a retired nurse, I can say that Ana is one of the smartest people I have met. She is an excellent nurse, wo does home care, wound care, end of life care, post surgical care, pre- and postpartum care, and any other health care need you may have. She is recommended by several doctors here in Cuenca, and her prices are very reasonable. She will communicate directly with your physician. She will come on an emergent basis, too, as she did for me. She is also a competent masseuse.

Recommendation for Dr. Marco Encalada, dentist

As you know the Rolls Royce is the best automobile, I give the same rating for Dr Marco Encalada, who is doing my implants for me. No pain – nothing. His professional manners are outstanding and the quality of his workmanship is impeccable. I highly recommend him. He was referred to me by my Ecuadorian friend whose family use him. If you’re looking for quality and professional work, he is your dentist. If you’re looking for food stamp prices move on. Quality costs.

Recommendation for Cuenca Car Share, car rental

I highly recommend Cuenca Car Share. I recently got my Ecuadorian Driver’s license and also had a friend visiting Ecuador, so we decided to rent a car and hit the road. We rented a Kia Sportage from Emilio at Cuenca Car Share and had an amazing two-week road trip. We drove from Cuenca to Banos, Tena, and Chimborazo/Riobamba area. At all altitudes and road types the car performed well for us and gave us a comfortable ride and lots of room for gear. Emilio both delivered and picked up the car from us, and it was overall a great experience. I highly recommend.

Expanded organic product list from El Mundo Organico

It’s time for you to order your next “Build-Your-Own Basket” from El Mundo Orgánico.

This week, we are featuring for in-store purchase and for home delivery “Angry Serbian” Prepared Horseradish for only $6.50 per bottle (limited supply).

Listed on our Home Page (, you will find we offer many, many more fresh, organic, natural, vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free, sugar-free, gluten-free, and biodegradable products than just our fruits and freshly picked organic veggies.

Pork products from King’s Smokehouse (GringoPost’s 2021 “Best Smoked Products” award winner), beef cuts and Paiche (fish) from Nunkui (GringoPost’s 2021 “Best Butchered Beef” award winner), and organic chicken (fresh or frozen, whole or parts, and special orders) are also available for home delivery.

“King’s Smokehouse” products include spice-cured and applewood-smoked pork products (no sodium nitrate or “liquid smoke” is used), such as bacon (1/2 lb. and 1 lb. packages), bacon bits, pulled pork, whole ham, sliced ham, ham hocks and ground sausage (mild and hot).

The “Nunkui” products offered are several cuts of grass-fed beef and farmed Paiche fish by the pound or kilo. The available cuts are beef tenderloin (lomo fino), steak (bife chorizo) and brisket. Paiche is a “non-fishy”, mild-flavored fish with a texture similar to lobster. Special orders are accepted for all of these products.

Our updated product list with pricing and ordering instructions can be found on the Home Page of our website, We will soon have the e-commerce page of our website functioning, but for now, we accept orders only via email ( and via What’s App texts to 093 906 2640.

Our store located on Francisco Cisneros in the first building on the left just south of the intersection with Autopista 582 – Via Cuenca-Molleturo-Naranjal (also known as Enrique Arízaga Toral), a short 5-minute drive or a 10-15 minute walk from Gringolandia.

Find us on Google Maps by searching for “El Mundo Orgánico” (not “Mundo Orgánico” or you will end up in the wrong place).

Remember, if you have a special request for a fruit or vegetable (or, for that matter, any other edible product for yourself or your pets) that is not on our list, please let us know, and we will do our best to find it for you.

Have a great day!
