Thank you for supporting Esperanza Thrift Shop’s ongoing success

Did you know that Esperanza Thrift Shop has been serving the Cuenca community for over 4 years now? In 2020, sales from the Thrift Shop contributed $16,740 to our programs here at Hogar de Esperanza (Home of Hope), and we gave away $6,675 worth of clothing to those in need. Through your generous donations of used items, we have additionally been able to provide beds, furniture, household items, kitchen utensils and more to those living on the edge and not able to afford such simple comforts.

We are grateful to all of you who support our Thrift Shop, either through your purchases or donations of items. If you are looking for somewhere to donate used items that you no longer need or want, we would gladly accept them with our commitment of putting them to the best use possible helping those in need. We accept donations of items Monday through Friday, from 10 AM to 5 PM. You can either drop them off at Esperanza Thrift Shop, located at Juan Montalvo 8-18 and Sucre, in Cuenca, or you can contact us for a pick-up. Thank you for your support.

Expat in need

Dear Friends,

There is an expat here who needs your help. Stephen Taylor, has been here just over 5 years and was selling art and various creations at ferias to make a living. Over the past year, his health deteriorated and he sustained tremendous weight loss and debilitating weakness. He can only get around with using a walker. Because of the year’s quarantine due to Covid, and the disappearance of ferias, he has had virtually no income to pay for any kind of injuries. He needs hip surgery which is totally unaffordable at this point as the cost is about $2500 for the metal necessary to perform the surgery, apparently, and replace his fractured bones. It would also help with the recuperation he will need for two weeks. In the meanwhile, his muscle weakness increases, and his situation becomes more tenuous.

Times are hard for many nowadays but still, I am reaching out to the expat community to see if you can help this man in whatever ways you can. There is another person trying to help him now, and you can contact him to contribute, or offer other resources. Any contributions are much appreciated and will be used to help him in this situation.

If wishing to contribute, please telephone Mike at 097 935 9227 or 099 101 9542.

Thank you.

Help Paws with Hope move

Hello Cuenca friends and friends of Paws with Hope. We are extremely thankful for all who are involved in keeping our rescue animals fed, sheltered, and vetted. Unfortunately, not too long ago we found out that that the owner of the house we recently rented has sold the house. Now we have no option but to relocate again. Luckily we have found a property that will allow the dogs and cats.

Currently we are home to 8 dogs: Ginger Bailey, Nila, Max, Scott, Gloria, Tala, and Peanut and 3 cats: Jake, Cleopatra, and Silas. Moving the animals again will not be easy and will not be low cost. We need to have the deposit money before Wednesday in order to secure the property.

So, we have no choice but to ask for help from the community and our supporters. We are just making it with food for the rescues and our other expenses so this move is not something we expected or can afford. Besides the deposit we need to come up with the first month’s rent and funding for the materials to raise and secure the fence to keep the rescue dogs safe and contained.

Any donation is very much appreciated. Also, if you are looking to adopt please send us a message. Paypal: Pawswithhopecuenca@yahoo.com

Seeking afternoon employment helping you or your children

On-line learning is a real challenge for youngsters and if they are English speaking with classes in Spanish, it can be even worse. Why not ask a real, live teacher to come to your home to tutor them? Or, if it works out better for you, she could tutor on line using Zoom – she has experience with that. She has her own children, so knows how to reach a child. Sometimes all it takes to help a child is someone who is there just for that child and is able to focus exclusively on them.

My friend is looking for work from 2 to 6 PM. She is a 42-year-old teacher with two teenagers who is currently earning a measly $200 a month. Her husband suffered from leukemia for a long time and has now died. She has to pay medical bills for him and is struggling just to make ends meet on that salary. Her children are in school and she works in the morning but needs a job in the afternoon to provide enough income for the family to eat properly and have the bare essentials, and to help pay the bills. She doesn’t speak English but is able to use Google Translate. She can tutor, cook, clean, and do gardening or other tasks around the home or office.

There is nothing like having a native speaker of Spanish assist your child with their Spanish classes. If you can’t employ her for a whole week, even an afternoon or two would help and hopefully someone else could employ her the other days. If you have a heart to help, please contact me,

Have you recharged your fire extinguisher lately?

Don’t bother! Use CosasPrep’s revolutionary fire extinguisher ball instead. There is no need for annual inspections or maintenance. Our lightweight fire extinguisher ball can easily be used by anyone – even children, and has a 5-year lifespan.

It is very simple to use. Just throw the ball into a fire and within 3 to 5 seconds, once the extinguisher ball reaches 270 degrees Celsius it will “explode” a dry chemical fire suppressant that covers and puts out the fire. The fire extinguisher ball comes with a metal frame that can be placed near propane tanks, circuit breaker boxes, kitchen or anyplace that is at risk of fire. Silently guarding against fire, it will put out a fire – even if nobody is near.

This is an ABC fire extinguisher, so it will put out fires from grease or combustible gas. Thanks to advanced technology, the fire extinguisher ball is harmless to humans and the environment even if dispersed near a person. $25.75 each, or 2 for $40. Available for pickup or delivery. For delivery, please add $4.50

A website link that illustrates the extinguisher’s effectiveness with video is shown in the comments below. P.S. The Sunrise Cafe store is now open 7-days a week, including Mondays.

Store # 1: Sunrise Café at Calle Larga 9-40 y Benigno Malo, Store # 2: Simon Bolivar 13-49 y Estevez de Toral. Sunrise Cafe: 9 AM to 3 PM daily. Simon Bolivar Store: 9 AM to 6 PM except Sundays.

Recommendation for Family’s Muebles, furniture shop

When looking for a new sofa, I found that the big name places were overpriced, but a lot of local places in el Centro offered sofas that were too hard or narrow for my taste. I then stumbled across this furniture shop and found that they can custom make sofas to your style and measurements. I was able to choose the firmness/softness of the sofa cushions and choose the fabric and even the color of the wooden feet. It was a very reasonable price and allowed me to get exactly what I wanted. The customer service was excellent. They even came to my home to take the exact measurements.

Recommendation for Emilio of all trades, jack of all trades

Is your furniture too low to the ground? Is it getting harder to get up out of your favorite chair? If you are tall or just have long legs sometimes the furniture here is difficult to get up from. I understand why the furniture is made for shorter people, but I don’t have to like it…or live with it.

We asked Emilio if he could make a metal frame to put under our electric recliners to make them taller. They used to sit right on the floor. He came out and measured and as you can see in the photos… he took care of our problem. They match the existing frames of our recliners so they even look nice. They are the perfect height now and our knees don’t crack and creek when we get up… Sometimes it’s the little things that make you happiest! Thanks so much Emilio!

Quick, order now before our horseradish is all gone

Be sure to add this item to your shopping list before it is gone. We have a limited supply of “Angry Serbian” Prepared Horseradish now available at El Mundo Orgánico ($6.50 per bottle).

In addition to our fresh, organic and natural fruits and vegetables, we also have a newly updated product list with pricing that includes many, many more of our organic, natural, vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free, sugar-free, gluten-free, biodegradable products as well as organic, farmed, grass-fed or naturally cured meat and fish products.

Our naturally cured meat products (no sodium nitrate or “liquid smoke” was used in the curing of the meats) are bacon (1/2 lb. and 1 lb. packages), bacon bits, pulled pork, whole ham, sliced ham, ham hocks and ground sausage (mild and hot) from King’s Smokehouse, GringoPost’s 2021 Best Smoked Products award winner.

For home delivery only at this time, you can order Nunkui’s grass-fed beef and farmed Paiche fish products. Nunkui is GringoPost’s 2021 Best Butchered Beef award winner. The available cuts of beef are beef tenderloin, steak and brisket. Filets of farmed Paiche, a mild-flavored fish with a texture similar to lobster, are also offered.
