Best of GringoPost 2021 Winners!

Thanks and congratulations to GringoPost Subscribers and, especially… CONGRATULATIONS to the WINNERS of the

Best Of GringoPost 2021
★   ★   ★   ★   ★

GringoPost’s Best of is a celebration of success.  It is a display of a collective appreciation of excellence.  The voices of “The GringoPost Community” have now been heard. It’s been a challenging year for Cuenca and Ecuador.  Thankfully, the adventurous spirit characteristic of expats shines through. To say we’ve met unforeseen challenges this year is quite an understatement. But, met them we have. Not without loss, not without adjustments but, here we are.  That makes us all…WINNERS.
We’ve reached for the stars — everything from the best view point to the best restaurants, historical sites and artists — and gotten them together for a compendium of why we love living in the shadow of the Andes, and can’t imagine living anywhere else.

As on every Valentine’s Day, the votes have been counted and turned into a compendium of our Best of GringoPost, 2021, full of dozens of awards celebrating the very best our area has to offer.

This year, more categories than usual did not receive sufficient votes to choose clear winners.  We will include these categories in future Polls so that as life returns to normal, members of the community will have the opportunity to share their appreciation for those that were not able to display their usual excellence this past year.

Now seems to be a good time to think about how we’d like our world to look in the months to come.  Hopefully, we are thinking about how our lives will improve as the virus fades.

It’s a privilege to live among the Best of 2021 and then see who’s next…

Organ donation – opting out

I vaguely remember being compulsorily opted in for organ donation when I applied for my permanent residence cedula at the Registro Civil in Cuenca. This was just a month before the pandemic started and I believe I did not give much thought to it at that time. However, over the course of the past year, my views on organ donation have changed somewhat (for religious and other reasons) and I am curious to find out if there's a way I can opt out of organ donation now?

Thank you all in advance for your kind feedback.

Landslide victims need your help

An 82-year-old woman was rescued alive, after being dragged by the massive slide that occurred in Chunchi.

Her son, 50, was trapped beneath a structural pillar which broke his legs.

These are just two of the hundreds of people impacted by this landslide.

Chunci and Changchan, Ecuador were hit by a massive landslide on February 12, 2021, displacing hundreds and threatening to displace many more.

Changchan, a small town, could disappear and Chunchi is also in danger. Many families have been evacuated from their homes. These families are currently being housed in schools and makeshift shelters. The pandemic makes this an extremely dangerous situation.

The Cuenca Soup Kitchen in partnership with Hearts of Gold ask for your help. We are collecting donations in order to send needed items including:

Free & Fun Language Exchange postponed 1 week for Carnaval

The long-running intercambio will be postponed one week because of the Carnaval. On that Monday (February 22nd), please login at the Zoom link below and join an enthusiastic group of native Spanish and English speakers as we converse in each other’s language in an encouraging and supportive environment.

All levels of ability are welcome, so don't be shy--even if you don’t speak a word of the language you want to learn, you will be helped by those that do.

To facilitate conversation, we often have fun with tongue twisters, riddles, slang, crossword puzzles, etc. Or, we just simply converse on various subjects. Anything to practice speaking.

The Zoom meeting starts promptly at 6 PM on every Monday. We usually end at 7 PM, or shortly thereafter.

No need to confirm your attendance; just show up and enjoy (and learn!).

ZOOM meeting link: https://utpl.zoom.us/my/effective
No password or meeting ID required.

See you there.

February 22nd, from 6 to 7 PM, Free, 100-1 Zoom y 101-1 Zoom, Cuenca.

Did all the taxes go from 12% to 30%?

I'm confused, is the sales tax IVA now 30% and not 12% anymore? Anyone know how long this is going to go on? It makes everything suddenly really expensive and not in budget now. Will it end?

Only four A.C.T. Angel spots left

We want to thank everyone who responded to our call for Angels to help the Azuay Community Theater continue through 2021.

As you know, due to COVID, Azuay Community Theater has had virtually no income for the past year. Even with help from our landlady over the last six months, our coffers are near empty and we must renew our lease at the end of March. While we have future productions in preparation, COVID restrictions and our concern for the safety of our audiences currently restrict future shows to 30 attendees per performance.

Therefore, in order to commit to a new lease, we need a base of funds to support our 2021 season. We have been seeking 25 A.C.T. Angels to commit to a $10 or $20 donation for each of the next 12 months. Thanks to the response we have received there are only 4 slots left!

In addition to the satisfaction of keeping A.C.T. alive for the next year, each $10 Angel will have the opportunity to buy two tickets per production prior to public sale. Each $20 (or more!) per month Angel will also receive a handsome ACT mug to remind them of their generous support of the arts with every morning’s coffee or tea (act fast, supplies are limited).

With only 30 seats per performance, we expect shows to sell out quickly, and, because of the limited seating, we must keep the number of Angels at 25.

If you wish to become one of our final four A.C.T. Angels, please email azuaycommunitytheater@gmail.com!

Are your children having trouble with on-line learning?

On-line learning is a real challenge for youngsters and if they are English speaking with classes in Spanish, it can be even worse. Why not ask a real, live teacher to come to your home to tutor them? She has her own children, so knows how to reach a child.

My friend is looking for work from 2 to 6 PM. She is a 42-year-old teacher with two teenagers who is currently earning a measly $200 a month. Her husband suffered from leukemia for a long time and has now died. She has to pay medical bills for him and is struggling just to make ends meet on that salary. Her children are in school and she works in the morning but needs a job in the afternoon to provide enough income for the family to eat properly and have the bare essentials, and to help pay the bills. She doesn't speak English but is able to use Google Translate. She can tutor, cook, clean, and do gardening or other tasks around the home or office.

There is nothing like having a native speaker of Spanish assist your child with their Spanish classes. If you can't employ her for a whole week, even an afternoon or two would help and hopefully someone else could employ her the other days. If you have a heart to help, please contact me,

Important information about Nunkui shop and gallery

A year ago, we started activities in our gallery store of the Nunkui project, although it has been a year full of difficulties, we are very grateful to our community partners, clients and friends, who have trusted in our work.

We are convinced that there are alternatives for local development, that respect the ways of life of native peoples and that conserve natural resources, and the Amazonian communities with whom we work also believe it, so we have had a greater offer of new bio-enterprises of different parts of the country, for this reason, in order to expand our offer, and at the same time seek to reach more people who know about the project, we inform them that Nunkui store gallery, is moving to a new location, which will be located on Simón Bolívar and Estévez de Toral streets.

We are almost ready, but it's necessary to temporarily close our attention to the public, so from Thursday, February 11, the store will be closed (we maintain the home delivery service) and we will inform you in a timely manner of the opening of the new store.

We count on your support, welcome.

Citizenship test and Spanish/English study material

Along this program you will…
… have simulation tests as well as simulations interviews to make you ready for taking Ecuadorian citizenship real test.
… get lots of practice with knowledgeable Ecuadorian teachers who use our study booklet (in Spanish and/or English), 300 flashcards and much more.
… get to know enough Ecuadorian history (flag, coat of arms and National Anthem) to pass the test.
… enjoy and learn the most complete and updated information on test for Ecuadorian citizenship in a meaningful way.

– We’ll take you to accurate Spanish level for taking real test.
– Your Spanish language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) will be enhanced in record time.
– Take the morning session (two hours) or the afternoon session (two hours). Or just take the hours you need based on your knowledge of Spanish, your availability and the date of your test.
– Classes are given twice, three times a week or every day, Monday thru Friday.
– You can take this program for four weeks or for four months. It is up to you.
– This program is exclusively prepared to meet your needs and expectations.

Recommendations from participants:

“Thanks to attending the language school “CCNations, Escuela de Idiomas” I was able to pass the Ecuador citizenship written and interview exams, and will soon become a naturalized citizen. With their homework materials and instructional classes, my level of Spanish increased to where I could study, learn, and pass these essential subjects: the history of the tri-color Flag (“la bandera”); the Coat-of-Arms Shield (“el escudo”); the National Anthem (“himno nacional”); the important battles, persons and events for gaining Independence; and the primary Presidents of Ecuador. These study materials include bilingual booklets and guides, flash cards, simulation tests (from the official examinations), and multiple practice sessions.

Classes can be scheduled on flexible hours for individual sessions, or with small groups of other students. Additionally, this private 18-year language school can also help applicants to pass the examinations to obtain a drivers’ license (“Licencia de Conducir”). This is one of the top language schools I have ever attended!”

Recommended by Bartley

“My success in passing the test on my first attempt was primarily due to CCNations, their time, efforts and patience in guiding me towards success. I really couldn’t have done so well without them. For this reason, I highly recommend this school to anyone who needs help with Spanish in any capacity.”

Lynn

· …learn to handle conversations in different situations, such as, giving directions on a taxi, shopping at different stores, making a doctor’s appointment, , etc.

When can I start?
You can start anytime.

Where are the lessons given?
They can be given online (SKYPE or ZOOM).

Can I come to the School in Cuenca?
Sure. We’re at 16-63 Mariscal Lamar, between Miguel Velez and Miguel Heredia. We’re in the north of Cuenca downtown. Just ring the doorbell at the door and you’ll be very welcome.

How long does this program last?
It lasts three weeks.

What should I do to start my immersion program?
Before you begin taking this Immersion Course, you will be interviewed to know your interests in topics you would like to discuss and talk about during this course. You will also have to take a placement test, which is free, to know your level of Spanish, so we can prepare a lesson plan for you and your partners.

Will I really learn to understand and speak Spanish?
Sure, you will! We’ve been teaching languages, Spanish included, for almost 20 years. Your Spanish will be enhanced in record time.

How do I pay for my lessons?
You can pay cash.
You can deposit or wire money to any of our savings accounts (Pichincha, JEP or Guayaquil)
You can pay thru PayPal with Xoom, a PayPal service.

What did participants say about our lessons?
“We got a small group of friends together who were frustrated in our mutual lack of advancement in Spanish after 2+ years in Cuenca. CCN’s approach to teaching, patience and encouragement has provided a fun environment in which to learn. In just a few short weeks, most of us have learned and retained more than other classes and online teaching.

We love our experience and look forward to each week’s class that is opening up a whole new world for us.”

“I am very pleased to recommend CCN’s Spanish teachers here in Cuenca. I have been taking private lessons from them for the past four weeks now and I continue to look forward to each new class with them. I am a naturally inquisitive individual and I like to ask lots of questions. I have previously taken group classes elsewhere but would come home frustrated, because I would rarely get the opportunity to have more than a few of my questions answered. The concepts I needed to understand were being left as a mystery to me. This is not the case with CCN’s Spanish teachers. They are amazingly patient and also very flexible. They always allow me to focus or redirect my private lesson toward the things I would like to learn. When I first met with them, they spent an hour with me free of charge, assessing my incoming Spanish abilities. Each subsequent class has been based on working from my current level and helping me improve. I really like the fact that they always type out our conversation on their computer screen as we are talking. I am a very visual learner and when I can also see on their screen what we are discussing, it really reinforces the entire learning process. This also means I do not need to take notes but can concentrate on the speaking/listening aspects of the learning process. When I get home, the notes which they created during our class are waiting for me in my email inbox. Now how cool is that? I can go back over everything we talked about in class as a review, at my leisure.”

Blake

Should you have any questions, we’ll be happy to assist you.

Facilitator with great recommendations/driver

I have facilitated for many expats here in Cuenca and around Ecuador. My skills include translating for doctors, in the hospital, helping resolve issues with banks, bills, and shopping, and lawyers if you have a legal issue. Without bragging too much, let me say that my English and Spanish are first class - when you tell me your need in English, I have no problem understanding what you want and explaining it in Spanish to whomever may need to know.

I love driving and visiting with people - it gives me a window on the world and sometimes, I can open a window on Ecuador for you as well.

When you tell me where you need to be and when you need to be there, I make sure to schedule appropriately. I know how long it takes to drive to Quito or Guayaquil, or even just to go shopping here in the city or visit outlying communities to search for jewelry or shoes or other specialties. I know the best places to eat along the way, too. If the roads are bad, I ask you to leave earlier so that we do not arrive late to your destination. If I am late, I notify you.

I have driven in the US as well as Ecuador. I drive safely, not rushing to get somewhere nor cutting corners on foggy roads. Need to go to Guayaquil to the Consulate or airport? Ask me. Want to go shopping in Guayaquil? I’ll take you. Feel like visiting the beach at Salinas? Or taking an exciting drive through the Route of the Volcanoes? I’d be happy to provide planning and driving. The car we use will depend on your needs – it could be a small car, an SUV or even a moving truck if you need to relocate. Maximum 3 people.

I keep my car clean and sanitized for your comfort and safety. In fact, one lawyer here in the city told one of my clients that she always uses Emilio because he cares about his passengers and watches out for their safety not only when driving but also by sanitizing his car and the passengers - something other drivers she has used have not done regularly.

Reasonable rates. Don't forget to bring your water and sanitizing equipment, though I do carry alcohol to share with you when we stop somewhere.

If you want references, just ask me – I have lots of them. Contact me on Facebook or WhatsApp.

Recommendation for Merlot, restaurant

If you like Italian food, good wine, drinks and friendly professional service, you'll definitely like Merlot. Sometimes one tries a new restaurant with some reservation, especially if you are eating solo. Merlot is a half a block off Solano on Gonzalo Cordero.

I had a nice Caesar salad, some excellent lasagna and light cream dessert. By the way, the Merlot, like its name was great. For a restaurant that is only open around a month, I must say they know what they are doing. It's a family-owned restaurant and you get that feeling as soon as you sit down.

Whether you speak Spanish or English you will get excellent service. I look forward to my next visit to try another dish. Everything I saw that came out of the kitchen looked delicious. Merlot is a fairly small place and you can sit safely either inside or out. They adhere to Covid regulations. Give it a try for either lunch or dinner. You'll be glad you did.

Recommendation for Franklin Morocho, metal working, practical repair solutions

We brought a 7 ft, tall, 1000 light, Christmas tree when we moved to Cuenca and soon after, discovered that one of the supports was broken - call it a leg with a wheel. We managed with it that way for several years, but in 2020 (when else?), just after decorating it, the wheel broke off underneath the tree leaving it very lopsided. I contacted the manufacturer (the base for this tree costs $89 without shipping, handling, and customs), hoping they would have a replacement part.

There was no response. When Franklin stopped by, I had him look at it. Since the leg was plastic, there wasn't any welding that could be done, but he did know how to fix it - with some kind of strong, epoxy-like glue. He took the leg with him and returned it yesterday, glued and ready to work. It was nicely finished and works perfectly. The fix cost me less than $20 - much more economical than insisting on getting a new part from the manufacturer.

You can contact Franklin by WhatsApp: +593 98 967 3289. He understands a lot of English and uses Google Translate very successfully. Franklin and his brother, Emilio, have worked in our house numerous times and are always friendly. They are completely honest - I will leave them working in the house alone with no problem whatsoever.

Thank you, Franklin.

Let the forest be the Ecuadorian medical system, public or private, that uses, primarily, the Spanish language. Let the compass be Diana Vera. With 8 years of experience, Diana knows her way around and is very easy to work with. She can help you with anything medical: translation, choosing MDs, make appointments, explain medical issues, maintain a medical file for you, end of life paperwork; whatever meets your medical needs.

She made my recent visits to multiple MDs so very, very easy. We still have to travel farther through the forest, but with Diana as my compass, no worries.

Are you lost in the forest? Call Diana. She will get you through and back to the open field of health again.

Recommendation for M&E Pet Lovers, pet sitting

Elizabeth and Mattias were great. We came home to happy pets and a clean house. They walked our - sometimes difficult - husky without problems. Our animals were very happy to see them when they returned our key. They are professional and veterinary students.

Recommendation for Nebraska Hypoallergenic steam cleaning

Cleaning of rugs and draperies

We had great experience with Freddy's services. He came to give us a quote and scheduled the cleaning the next day. He cleaned area rugs and custom draperies with valances. He removed the drapes and returned them and reinstalled them next day. He is on time, professional and fluent in English.

New products available from El Mundo Orgánico

Firstly, we want to apologize to anyone who went to our website last week to try to find our expanded list of products, but the list did not include the new products. (There was a mix-up with putting the new list on our website).

Secondly, the new product list includes many, many more of our organic, natural, vegan, vegetarian, lactose-free, sugar-free, gluten-free and biodegradable products for sale in our store and for home delivery, which is now available for viewing on the Home Page of our website (www.elmundoorganico.com).

Don’t forget—as an additional limited-stock offer, you can now purchase a 4 oz. size bottle of “Angry Serbian” Prepared Horseradish for $6.50.

In addition to the beautiful, fresh and delicious organic vegetables and natural fruits we offer, we also now feature a gourmet selection of products, both in our store and for home delivery, from “+K, Maska la vida” and “SIZÚ Lab”.

Our “+K, Maska la vida” brand products include a delicious selection of vegan/vegetarian toppings for sandwiches, burgers and breads or for use in salads. For example, we have chopped eggplant in olive oil, chopped hot peppers in olive oil (and I mean hot!), and a tangy pepper/amaretto marmalade, as well as vegan hamburger patties and vegan sausage links.

From “SIZÚ Lab”, we now carry in our store “SIZÚ”’s vegan, vegetarian, and organic products. We have on hand olives in an herb-infused olive oil, garlic confit, onion chutney, hummus, green pepper relish, an organic salty toffee sauce for desserts, pancakes and waffles, sugar-free sweetened almonds, cilantro pesto, basil pesto, granola and sugar-free peanut butter bars.

Check our website Home Page for the prices and sizes/weights of both the “+K, Maska la vida” and “SIZÙ Lab” products.

Don’t forget; we also carry a selection of organic wines from France, Chile and Spain.

The minimum order for a “Build-Your-Own Basket” is $17 for free delivery. (Orders for less than the minimum value of $17.00 will have a $3 delivery fee added.)

You are also invited to visit our store. Although we will be closed on Sunday and Monday, 14-15 February for Carnaval, we will be back open on Tuesday, 16 February.

Our location can now be found on Google Maps, provided you enter the name “El Mundo Orgánico” (not “Mundo Organico” or you will end up in the wrong place).

Remember, if you have a special request for a fruit or vegetable (or any other edible product for that matter), please let us know, and we will do our best to find it for you.

Have a great day.
