Appointments at Azogues

Peter and I have been at work since late June pulling together the paperwork for permanent visas – background reports, apostilles, translations, everything. It was a challenge mainly because the State Department is working with a skeleton staff on apostilles, and prioritizing life and death. But without missing one moment except the week when State wrote to say they won’t honor checks without an address, we have pursued the required documents for four months, finally got it together and then sought an appointment at Azogues, to discover that the first available turno is December 29. At that point we will be on the edge of documents going stale, since some of these can be no more than a few months old. Thus it appears to be an insoluble problem. We are about ready to give up. Please do not write back to say that for $1000 you can solve it. For $1000 we can fly away. If you have any free advice that would be gratefully received.

The Free & Fun Language Exchange on Zoom – all levels welcome

Please login at the Zoom link below and join an enthusiastic group of native Spanish and English speakers as we converse in each other’s language in an encouraging and supportive environment.

All levels of ability are welcome, so don’t be shy–even if you don’t speak a word of the language you want to learn, you will be helped by those that do.

To facilitate conversation, we often have fun with tongue twisters, riddles, slang, crossword puzzles, etc. Or, we just simply converse on various subjects. Anything to practice speaking.

The Zoom meeting starts promptly at 6 PM on every Monday. We usually end at 7 PM, or shortly thereafter.

No need to confirm your attendance; just show up and enjoy (and learn).

This week In La Guarida

This week in La Guarida will be a short week as we will be taking a tiny break for the holidays. We will be open only Tuesday to Thursday and are back on November 3rd (Election Day) with ‘As Good As It Gets.’ In the meantime, we are projecting the following films:

Tuesday 6:45 PM: ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.’ An incredible film by Taiwanese American director Ang Lee. This movie was nominated to 10 Academy Awards taking home 4 of them including Best Foreign Language Film. It also won Best Original Music Score for its sweeping soundtrack and Best Art Direction for its mind-blowing martial arts sequences.

Wednesday 6:45 PM: ‘I Am Not Your Negro.’ A documentary by Raoul Peck about the life and journey of civil-rights activist James Baldwin. A necessary reminder of why the movement ‘Black Lives Matter’ is important in our society. It doesn’t matter to which political party you subscribe, these films are eye opening into the lives and struggles of minorities and may help us find real solutions to real problems. We are in Election Year and we must consider the lives of others as we select the people that will lead us into the future. This documentary helps us to do that.

Every Tuesday, we also host an organic market in the morning and we continue with our organic breakfasts from Tuesday to Thursday from 9 AM to 1:30 PM. We also have wine specials, bagels, honey, Nunkui and Cuenca Salmon products, sourdough bread and a wonderful art exhibit by Maestro Segovia.

Also, come try our new lamb burger with tzatziki sauce, wonderful provolone cheese and crispy yucca fries. Please know that all of our ingredients are sourced by local organic producers which increases our quality and the nutritional benefits of all of our dishes apart from helping out the local economy. We are proud of this and we are even prouder of our lamb burger (we are the only place in Cuenca where you can find one).

We love all your support and we love the films that we project. We are in the Tranvia’s path which is very convenient for many of you. For most, we are just less than a 10 minute taxi ride away.

No excuses. Fill yourself with incredible films and food.

Recommendation for Mercedes Merci Ortiz, house cleaning

Mercedes is a delightful person to work with and can do an excellent job for you with or without supervision. She is very trustworthy. No IESS payment for employer. She will keep your home sparkling clean. Just open the door, give her your instructions, and she’s off and running. Her husband is a handyman, too, if the need arises. Best contacted through Facebook since she is primarily a Spanish speaker. Search for Mercedes Merci Ortiz. Her WhatsApp # is supplied below. You can also email me if you have any questions.

Recommendation for Mustafa Aladawi, computer and television technician

As evidenced by the many recommendations in GringoPost, Mustafa is obviously a highly competent, well-liked techie for all manners of electronic issues. My husband and I have relied on his expertise multiple times in recent years, not only for problem solving but also for help in acquiring new hardware and software.

Most recently, Mustafa observed that we might like having a Firestick connected to our television more than, or at least in addition to, the Apple TV we had been enjoying for some time. We placed an order with him. A couple of weeks later he brought it over, installed it, and downloaded a number of his favorite free viewing apps in addition to our subscription apps (Netflix, Prime and CuriosityStream).

How right Mustafa was, as always. We now have enhanced access to pretty much every movie and television show ever produced (including those just released), all 700+ US television stations, something like 6,000 other content sites worldwide, and no doubt many additional viewing options that we haven’t discovered yet.

Mustafa is punctual, reasonably priced, and fluent in English. Next time you want a techie, he should be your go-to guy.

Recommendation for Juanita Ruth One, private lessons in Spanish

I have studied Spanish with Juanita for about two years and highly recommend her. Although language studies is not my strong suit, I feel confident conversing with native speakers for basic communications.

Juanita provides individual instruction focusing on the importance of proper pronunciation and the individual student’s needs and abilities. She is knowledgeable, patient and very personable, which makes learning relaxed and fun.
She charges $8 per hour and her schedule is flexible.

Recommendation for Fabian Vera, taxi/facilitator, driver/facilitator

In need of a “companion” to accompany me to a surgical visit due to protocol, I started looking for some help. Came across Fabian and very glad I did. His help proved invaluable over a two-week span. Fabian is a very good man, good natured and easy to deal with, prompt, will keep in contact with you when needed, and provided much needed assistance with translation, additional questions, reminders and anything he saw was needed. He also provides other types of services upon request. English is excellent. If you need help in your everyday life in any capacity, consider Fabian. Best way to contact him is thru his WhatsApp # listed below. You’ll be happy you did. I was!

Recommendation for Dr. Giuseppe Miotto, Exilaser, eye surgeon

Highest recommendation for Dr. Miotto re cataract surgery. His surgery yielded better than expected results. I have 20/20 vision again but will still need glasses for small print. He provides a painless procedure, a highly efficient and attentive staff always tending to your needs, as well as providing you with state of the art technology/equipment. I never thought I would see this well again, so thank you Dr. Miotto. If you are considering cataract surgery or have any other eye care needs, stop by Exilaser. They will take care of you.

Recommendation for Silvia, sells KN95 protection masks

I highly recommend Silvia for your purchases of KN95 masks. She has many assorted styles and colored masks as well. Want to be festive? Try the KN95 masks with Halloween designs printed on them! After seeing their ad in Gringo Post this morning I decided to email them as they also offer free delivery. Their response was almost immediate and it just happened that they were in the neighborhood, so 10 minutes later they delivered as promised and we are set to continue distancing and keeping safe. Prices are very competitive also.

Recommendation for Orland Siquenza, Guide, driver, facilitator

Now that things are opening back up in Ecuador, we want to highly recommend Orlando Siquenza for safe, timely and efficient driving services, guided tours throughout Ecuador, and your facilitation needs. Orlando is our go-to driver to and from the airport in Guayaquil. He is on time and safe, no matter the weather, mud slides, etc. He is also our go-to guy for guided trips around Ecuador when we have guests come from the States. He recently completed a multi-year course to qualify as a certified guide for the country, and his knowledge of Ecuador is extensive. His English is superb. We haven’t used him as a facilitator, but given the great service he has provided as a driver and guide, we have to believe he’s also well qualified for that!
