Recent (Jul 8, 2020) flight(s) from Cuenca to Europe

I recently flew out of Cuenca – last Wednesday – Jul 8, 2020.

My comments:

Cuenca to Quito – The plane was pretty full … middle seats vacant … LATAM … No Covid19 testing necessary.

The next three legs of the trip were all United.

Quito to Houston … again pretty full with middle seat being empty. Quito airport was not busy.
Houston to Newark … facemasks were mandatory at the airport. Not very busy. No big deal entering the US with a US passport. The plane was about 15% to 20% full … plenty of room for social distancing (and sleep).

Newark to Dublin … large jumbo jet with about 40 passengers (at most). Plenty of space for social distancing and sleep.

Arrival in Dublin and not much activity there either. No issues on entering since I have an Irish passport.

I have to undertake to self-quarantine here in Dublin for 14 days.
Overall, not an unpleasant trip. I was hesitant about the journey but it ended up being no big deal.

Two more dog poisonings along Rio Tomebamba

Hola, todos, This is the third dog poisoning in three weeks. Apparently, the City of Cuenca has put out rat poison along the Rio Tomebamba. We’ve been noticing dead rats from Los Cedros west to Los Cerezos. In the last three weeks that I’m aware of, one dog died, one survived and the other is still at Dr. Gallardo’s. Please be careful!

Daily encouragement from Trinity Vineyard Church

Pleasing God

“By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.” Hebrews 11:5

Two people in the Bible had the distinct privilege of not experiencing death, namely, Enoch and Elijah. Enoch walked with God and was no more because God took him away (Genesis 5:24). Elijah went up into heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2:11). Can you imagine walking with God and then bypassing death altogether in order to be instantly ushered into the presence of the Lord?

What kind of life did Enoch live before he was taken up to heaven? The Bible gives us clarity that Enoch lived by faith. He is honored in the Hall of Faith found in Hebrews chapter eleven. Enoch’s walk with God gave evidence of a lifestyle devoted to pleasing God. Enoch embraced a consistent lifestyle that brought honor to God. He was an avid God pleaser!

Do you please God? Are you loving what God loves and hating what God hates? Assess your current reality. Examine the motives behind your lifestyle. Consider the spiritual resume that you are building through your walk with God. Think about how your life influences others. Can you be commended as one who pleases God?

If the focus of your life has been pleasing yourself, repent of that sin. Reorient your life to embrace a lifestyle of pleasing God. Make God’s smile the goal of your life. Become a God pleaser!

Imports

Importing can be a complicated and confusing process regardless of which countries products are imported to and from. It can also be expensive if something goes wrong, which is not uncommon. Unless you do a lot of importing it is hard to learn everything you need to get it right, and quite likely not worth it compared to having professionals assist you with it.

Jamaica Shandy (4.5%)

All our beer is hand made here in Cuenca using food grade Stainless Steel equipment with all the correct permissions/registro sanitarios. We make a truly “old school” beer that is unfiltered and naturally carbonated (so we don’t need to worry about C02 shortages because we don’t use it).

The Hop Factory, coffee delivery

We are the only distributor of Vilcabamba’s Café Dona Julita in Cuenca. We started offering it for sale because it is all we drink and as long as we can keep the supply coming in, we will share with the public. The three styles are:

Premium: medium dark roast $4/400 g available in whole bean or ground (finely ground).

Gourmet: medium roast $5/400 g available in whole bean or ground (course grind).

Honey: medium dark roast $6/400 g available in whole bean or ground (the grind is not super fine-coarser than the Premium dark roast similar to the Gourmet).

Honey roast is a special coffee made for our Black Honey coffee liqueur with Bourbon beans, we let the white pulp of the coffee bean air dry to create a coffee honey coating prior to roasting. Rare and amazing but limited supply.

Our Black Honey is our fantastic coffee liqueur. Developed from a year-long collaboration with the Dona Julita team and our team at The Hop Factory. Very similar to Kahlua but fresh brewed with no preservatives /filters to create a 100% locally made natural taste. (makes amazing white/black Russians).

Learn Spanish and French and have fun doing it

Hi,

I’m Elisa and I’ve been a certified teacher of Spanish and French for more than ten years. I’ve studied Spanish language and literature and I worked as a high school teacher of French and Spanish in Cuenca, for five years; then I went to the South of France, where I studied audiovisual production for five years and I was also a Spanish teacher for l’Académie de Montpellier (the French Government) for two years. I came back to Cuenca recently and I’ve been working as a freelance
French and Spanish teacher for a few months.

All of these departures and arrivals make me feel concerned about films, literature, gastronomy but also about psychology, sociology and ecology. I would like to share with you all my passions!

I’ve developed a dynamic method to teach languages. My goal is to adapt the lessons to your needs and interests. If you want to learn Spanish, I can show you the city while we have conversations about the history and the present of the city. If your needs are related to grammar, I can find a way to make it simple. And if you are interested in learning French we can talk about French culture and It will be a pleasure to introduce you to French gastronomy.

I’m ready to comply with all the safety measures to have safe face-to-face classes, I can come to your home or you can come to mine but, if you prefer, we can start our classes online.

Recommendation for a topnotch dentist, Prodentist

Year after year, Dr. Juan Ordoñez never fails to get me in his chair. Just as covid outburst started I realized I needed to get in and see him for a regular cleaning. Unfortunately for me we got stuck on lock down. 3 months later it was finally my turn. After Covid stress, that cleaning was really needed. I feel good as new with my pearly whites thoroughly manually cleaned.

Recommendation for Anna Luisa Spanish Classes

One of our goals toward assimilation of a new culture opon immigration to Ecuador was learning Spanish. Neither of us has had “formal” Spanish language instruction, but both were exposed to it in various forms having lived and worked in Texas most of our lives. A former teacher in the States recommended that we study formally, and Cuenca is certainly a place known for this. Several expats we met recommended Anna Luisa, who used to conduct her classes in person at a local cafe.

We were skeptical with the Zoom classes offered, as we use Zoom to visit with friends and family in the States, and one of us has a hearing disability. But we took the plunge and registered for the entry level beginning classes about 4 weeks ago. We have class from 10:30-11:45 on Mondays and Thursdays each week, for 7 weeks per “module”. Currently there are 8 modules from beginner through advanced, each 7 weeks, with a 1-week break. Each module is $100.

After 8 classes, we both are amazed at our progress. Anna Luisa is one of the best teachers either of us has ever had, and we have both had a lot of very fine instruction through university and postgraduate studies in the US. She teaches by the “natural approach” of language instruction (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_approach) and it is perfect for adult learners.

There is no kinder person than Anna Luisa, as she gently instructs without leaving us feeling frustrated. The results are very evident as we are now able to have conversations with the kind Cuencanos at the mercado, restaurants, and tiendas (more than just pointing to the “fresas, por favor”)!

Each class reviews a story primer, pronunciation, and vocabulary, with Ecuador and Cuenca culture and current events. There is homework assigned for each class. Zoom education classes are actually working out quite nicely for us, as notes are taken and work done on a shared screen during class are sent via e-mail after class for review.

We cannot more highly recommend Anna Luisa for language instruction.

Recommendation for Juan Carlos Guartan, electrician

Excellent electrician in Cuenca: Juan Carlos Guartan

“220… 221… Whatever it takes.” ~Jack Butler

From what we have read, there are some Mr. Moms wiring homes, apartments and buildings in Cuenca. My wife and I would like you to know about an electrician that will do things right the first time around.

And more importantly, we want you to know about this young electrician in Cuenca who is punctual and who communicates.

Juan Carlos Guartan has done an excellent job of installing lights in and outside of our apartment. He has wired our pergola so that no wires are showing anywhere. This electrician takes pride in his work. He is great for electrical advice, too, as he helped us find pendant lights for our kitchen.

To add to all of that, Juan purchased our lights for us. This was especially helpful when it came to our outdoor lights as there are so few places in Cuenca that sell them.

One last thing, Juan is multi-talented. He helped put our parrilla de gas together last weekend. Neither of us wanted to put together another exterior gas grill so Juan did a wonderful and thorough job. His attention to detail showed as he bought clamps for the gas hose as well as clamps to hold the hose on the wall to prevent possible trouble.

Please give this man a holler! Please note his English is very limited, but with some high-tech help, we could communicate with Juan. He can be reached at:
