Second Viva Vivaldi Festival at the Digital Room of the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra

Osvaldo Urbieta, brilliant Mexican violinist, is the Guest Soloist for the new digital concert of the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra on its YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/sinfonicacuenca and on Facebook https: //www.facebook. com / sinfonicacuenca this Tuesday, June 30 at 8 PM, chamber music concert recorded on Friday, November 8, 2019 at La Catedral Vieja. The repertoire includes: The Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi and The Four Seasons by Astor Piazzolla.

The 8 Stations. On this occasion and within the framework of the second Viva Vivaldi Festival held in November 2019, we presented two masterpieces about the four seasons: those of the Baroque Venetian composer Antonio Vivaldi and those of the twentieth-century tango revolutionary, Astor Piazzolla. This banquet is presented in period costumes, offering the public a true audiovisual party.

In the Four Stations of Vivaldi we find exemplified all the revolutionary characteristics of the Vivaldian baroque concert; absolute music, unrelated to the church; the three-beat contrasts: fast-slow-fast; the contrasting dynamic element due to the echo effect; a virtuoso soloist, accompanied only by the basso continuo, faces the entire orchestra; and finally, the imitation of nature, a good pretext to write a work with a spectacular imaginary title.

On the other hand, in Las Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas, Astor Piazzolla does not describe nature to us, but the bohemian spirit of the city of Buenos Aires, intoxicated with the frivolous elegance of tango in which the voices of the bandoneon and the violin aspire to the nostalgia and sadness of the soul.

Osvaldo Urbieta – Violinist. Oaxaca-Mexico. He begins his musical studies in the family. He enters the “Ollin Voliztli” Cultural Ensemble School of Life and Movement Improvement to the Violin chair with the teacher Sergei Gorbenko and graduates with honors.

He has participated in the Chamber Music festivals in San Miguel de Allende and in the International Festival at the University of Houston Texas. He completed a Chamber Music Diploma at the National Center for the Arts with the Latin American Quartet.

Soloist of the Vida y Movimiento symphony orchestra, of the First International Festival of Classical Music of Oaxaca with the San Francisco Symphony, Orquesta de la Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez de Oaxaca, Guivi ni´ruld Chamber Orchestra, New Mexico Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra “Viva Vivaldi”, Mexican Symphony Orchestra, Michoacán Symphony Orchestra, Puebla Symphony Orchestra, Yucatan Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Autonomous University of Mexico.

For his great national and international career, he has obtained numerous awards and recognitions, including: 2nd Place in the Best Performer contest organized by Choirs and Youth Orchestras of Mexico. 1st. Place in the 5th National Violin Competition “Hermilo Novelo” at UNAM, Hermilo Novelo Prize in the 4th international violin competition “Henrik Szeryng” awarded to the best Mexican interpreter. 2nd place in the contest of the 3rd. National Chamber Music Prize of Salamanca – Guanajuato.

With this installment, there will be 18 digital concerts that the public can enjoy and share from anywhere on the planet at the time and times they want in the Digital Room of the Cuenca Symphony Orchestra.

Sanitize your air with UV-C disinfection lights with or without ozone

UV-C disinfection lights w or w/o ozone
Two models are available at CosasPrep or for delivery inside Ecuador. Both models provide Ultraviolet light in the 253.7 nanometer range that in 30 minutes has been shown to sterilize:

-Escherichia coli (99.42%)
-Staphylococcus aureus (99.92%)
-Candida albicans (99.09%)
-Aspergillus niger (97.73%)
-Mucor mucedo GIM3.84 (88.00%)
-Penicillium citrinum gIM3.100 (99.15%)
-Mites: 100%
(Certification and pricing details are available on our website – cosasprep.com)

This is serious equipment. Do not look directly into the light, or spend time with exposed skin toward the lamp. To protect your heath, and the health of pets, these lamps feature a motion sensor that automatically turns the lamps off when you enter the room. About 20 seconds after you’ve left the room, the sterilization process resumes.

For the model that includes ozone production, it should only be used in an area that can be aired-out after use. The ozone generated is often used to destroy viruses, mold and bacteria in the air. Ozone will penetrate nooks and crannies found in carpets, walls and light fixtures.

According to the manufacturer, their major buyers are hospitals, and most of them choose the option without ozone. (For home use, we are seeing that most people choose the model with ozone.)

Coverage: About 40 square meters.

(Contact us for delivery/payment options – including credit cards and PayPal.)

Los Roques Cream Punch by Rygkhen

Venezuelan company promises in Ecuador, using 100% Ecuadorian raw material.

This is one of the traditions that, despite the distance, we have tried to keep alive. It’s an ivory white creamy drink that can be served with or without alcohol, enough ice, and ground or raw cinnamon to give it a personal touch in flavor and aroma.

Cream Punch

Over time, Eliodoro González P. began his work of experimenting drinks based on Creole elements: he began to work with milk, adding sugar and adding the purest grape alcohol mixture. This is how Ponche Crema was born in 1900.

Today, we; Ponche Crema Los Roques, we have decided to bring part of the Venezuelan culture to this beautiful country, which offers opportunities to both natives and foreigners.

In August, 2016, we arrived in Ecuador, specifically Cuenca, due to the vast Venezuelan departure in search of new opportunities. Thus, as in December of that same year, as part of those traditions that we long for, we tried to create the cream punch, remembering the characteristic flavors of the drink to share it among friends.

Cuenca New Day – what to publish?

We wanted to give you an idea of what types of articles we will be publishing, what we don’t intend to publish, and an overview of our general philosophy. In our next posting, we will discuss some of the many things decided during the weekend’s “all hands on deck” virtual meeting.

Our general philosophy will be to publish articles with an emphasis on Ecuador in general and Cuenca in particular. Our goal is to enlighten and entertain without creating divisions in our readership. There will be some human-interest stories, articles about ways to make your life better here in Cuenca, how to help other people living here (both gringos and expats), and more.

We have no intention of ever publishing controversial articles. Here’s our thought process on this – there are many other sources if you want to read a particular viewpoint on religion (or atheism), hating Trump or loving Trump, etc. It is extremely rare to change anybody’s mind on any of these types of issues. So, our focus will be on things that almost everyone can use to make their lives better and to help Ecuador as we can help. This does not mean that we don’t have opinions on many controversial issues, but any discussions of these are best left for individuals speaking to other individuals treating each other with mutual respect. (Calling someone a name doesn’t increase your chances of having someone see your way of thinking)

Obviously, with the current COVID-19 situation, somethings like restaurant reviews, and adventures in the countryside won’t be taking place for now. When possible we’d like to do these kinds of features. Also, we will do a little on Ecuadorian politics. These articles will focus on stated ideas and plans rather than weighing in on their merits.

Stories we’re working on:

The pros and cons of owning a car versus using taxis, buses, and the Tranvia.

Schooling in Ecuador during COVID-19. Interviews with public and private school teachers and students. And, what about students without internet access?

How you can translate almost any newspaper article and how to find the articles.

ECU911 the service, the app, and why you might have problems downloading the app.

It’s a new day in Cuenca – Cuenca New Day.

Craft beer from the the Hop Factory 4th of July Special

4th of July Special. For every 6 pack of beer you buy you will receive a free beer to celebrate the 4th of July.

Our available beers are: IPA (6%), Stout (6%) Sour Stout (6%), American Ambar Ale (6%), Pale Ale (5.5%), and Jamaica Shandy (4.5%). All our beer is hand made here in Cuenca using food grade Stainless Steel equipment with all the correct permissions/registro sanitarios. We make a truly “old school” beer that is unfiltered and naturally carbonated (so we don’t need to worry about C02 shortages because we don’t use it).

Deliveries will be 8 AM to 11 AM on Thursdays (due to current restrictions). Please have all orders in by Wednesday to ensure on-time delivery. We have a minimum of 6 beers per order. Beers are $3 each (300ml).

We also have Coffee and Coffee liqueur available. We are the only distributor of Vilcabamba’s Café Dona Julita in Cuenca. We started offering it for sale because it is all we drink and as long as we can keep the supply coming in we will share with the public. The three styles are:

“Premium” dark roast $4/400g available in whole bean or ground (finely ground).
“Gourmet” medium roast $5/400g available in whole bean or ground (course grind).
“Honey:” dark roast $6/400g available in whole bean {sold out} or ground (the grind is not super fine- coarser than the Premium dark roast similar to the Gourmet). This is a special coffee made for our Black Honey coffee liqueur with Bourbon beans, we let the white pulp of the coffee bean air dry to create a coffee honey coating prior to roasting. Rare and amazing but limited supply.

Our Black Honey is our fantastic coffee liqueur. Developed from a year-long collaboration with the Dona Julita team and our team at The Hop Factory. Very similar to Kahlua but fresh brewed with no preservatives/filters to create a 100% locally made natural taste. (makes amazing white/black Russians) $15 per bottle (750 ml 16% abv). **Shake before serving as it is all natural and unfiltered.
All orders must be $18 or $2 will be added for delivery.

We look forward to the world getting back to normal and inviting you all back out to our little hidden brewery. In the meantime, we are here to help you enjoy life a little more at home.

De la Bandera Nacional y Calle de Himno. July 2 ~ 8 AM to noon

Daily encouragement from Trinity Vineyard Church

Conflict Resolution

“Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.” 1 Peter 3:8

Families that resolve conflict together stay together.

If the devil came to you for counsel on how to destroy families, what would your advice be? Perhaps you would recommend the weapon of mass destruction, unforgiveness. Harmony is poisoned and trust is eroded by unforgiveness. Unforgiveness feeds suspicion and fertilizes bitterness.

As a result of living in a fallen world among fallen people, conflict is inevitable. In other words, motion causes friction. It is not a matter of “if” conflict will happen, but a matter of “when” conflict will occur. Conflict is a natural part of life in a broken world.

Every relationship at some point will hit the wall of conflict. Every wall of conflict has a door which leads to conflict resolution, meaningful conversation, and intimacy. Unfortunately, we often react to the wall of conflict by withdrawing or attacking. Instead of patiently pursuing conflict resolution, we take a short cut and forfeit the potential on the other side of the wall of conflict.

What if we were willing to risk the pursuit? What if we were willing to allow God to navigate us through the process of locating the door positioned at every wall of conflict? What if we decided to resolve conflict together?

Forgiveness unlocks the door!

Ordonez Lasso.

Recommendation for M&E pet lovers, pet/house sitters

Mateo and Elizabeth are veterinary students at the University. We hired them to look after our two cats and our apartment in El Centro in early March for a few weeks while we were in the States. Of course we got stuck out there until June 23.

I cannot recommend them highly enough. It was a remarkable situation and they really rose to the occasion. They were excellent with the cats and with adapting to a three month stay and care. we got regular pictures of the cats, communication was great and as things came up and we had to change flights and got delayed it was always met with good nature and a commitment to stay as long as needed.

It was such a relief to know that in what could have been a tricky situation we never once had to worry about the welfare of our cats and the apartment.

They even adjusted the diet of the cats and we are now using their service for food and litter. Plus,we hear they are getting a supply of catnip which we have found impossible to get here in the past.

Recommendation for Roman Uyaguari, driver

Mr. Uyaguari drove me from Cuenca to Guayaquil on the evening of June 10th to catch an early morning flight to the US. He arrived in a clean, spacious van equipped with water and hand sanitizer ahead of the pickup time. Before we left, he showed me the salvoconducto documents he had recently printed. These came in handy when we were stopped at a checkpoint outside of Cuenca; another driver who presumably did not have a salvoconducto was being detained. Mr. Uyaguari stressed that he always travels with all necessary documents.

Mr. Uyaguari also distinguished himself when we arrived at the Guayaquil airport to find that my flight had been delayed. In the first place, he waited for me while I spoke to airport staff; then he helped me make a decision on where to stay, and drove me there. The extra effort on his part elicited no complaint; on the contrary he remained friendly and helpful. Leading up our departure Mr. Uyaguari was always available by phone and text. He is familiar with all routes throughout Ecuador. On top of it all, his prices are favorable; I’m fluent in Spanish and had checked around. He’s a true professional and I have every reason to recommend his services, especially in times of uncertainty and tension.

Recommendation for Carla Encarnacion Gonzaga, real estate agent

Carla did a wonderful job in helping me to find a new home. She listened to my wish list and spent quite a bit of time showing me properties that fit my needs. While her fees are paid by the landlord, Carla did an excellent job in negotiating terms and price that met everyone’s budget. She is very professional, punctual and speaks excellent English. Carla has earned a well-deserved reputation for being one of the top realtors in Cuenca.

Recommendation for Cameron Kayce

Massage therapy, and Hypnotherapy.

I can’t say enough about my weekly deep tissue massage and hypnotherapy session with Cameron. Not only is Cameron helping me with severe knee issues, she is working with me to support my daily wellness with Hypnotherapy. There’s a reason why this gem of a community member is voted “Best Massage Therapist” for 7 years running in GringoPost.

$30/ hour or $40/ 90 min.

Cameron’s welcoming and peaceful therapy room is conveniently located in her home on Mariscal Lamar, just east of Las Americas. You can take the tram.

Recommendation for Need an Appliance Repaired?, appliance repair

Did something with a motor break during this pandemic? No worries. Jorge Tosi is the man who can help.

My Indurama microwave was making a popping noise and I was a little concerned that it would cause a fire. I took the microwave to Jorge, who is right off Ordonez Lasso, and he had fixed it by the next day.

Jorge maintains, services and repairs washers, dryers, heaters, califons, microwaves, ovens, exhaust fans, refrigerators, freezers, vacuums, even mixers. In other words, anything with a motor.

All his work is guaranteed.

Ken Morton, a friend who makes furniture to order and has a shop next door to Jorge’s shop, is from the US and would be fine if you called him first to explain the problem to Jorge. Ken’s cell phone number is 099 028 9149.

How to get there? Follow Av. Ordoñez Lasso approximately 1.8 km from Av. de las Americas. Look for Calle Totoras on the left, about 100 meters beyond the white church (Virgen del Milagro), which is also on the left. If you’ve gone past the “Billy el Pollo” restaurant, with a bunch of rotisserie chickens out front, you’ve gone too far.

Along the #3 bus line, just past Iglesia Virgen del Milagro (Virgin of the Miracle Church).

Address: Calles Totoras y Av. Ordoñez Lasso, Quebrada de Sacay.

Recommendation for Coffee Cor Cafe

I would like to recommend Coffee Cor as a great place to relax with a cup of coffee, a sandwich or a pastry. The owner, Andrea Coronel, had a 20 year career in journalism before attending the coffee academy and then opening her specialty coffee shop.

She opened her cafe in March, 2019, and we enjoyed going there before the pandemic and she is open once again.

She makes 24 different styles of coffee, both cold and hot. Our favorite is the Latte Tonka. This is the only place in Cuenca that has this special flavor that is made from the tonka bean found in the Amazon.

She has a nice club BLT sandwich, croque monsieur as well as other sandwiches. We enjoyed the carrot cake and the opera cake.

She is located at Cornelio Merchán 1-150 y José Peralta (the street next to the KFC side of Millenium Plaza) – about half way down the block.

Hours are 10 AM – 6 PM. She hopes to be open until 8 PM soon.

Recommendation for Enrique Granado Construction

Residential and light commercial

Do you know of a good painter? We do.

We wanted to paint our two bedrooms and the living room in our apartment. After getting the approval of our landlord (no problem), we contacted Daniela Cordero, our insurance agent (yes the same Daniela you see advertising VUMI and BMI insurance plans) whose husband has his own construction business (Enrique Granado Construction). Enrique doesn’t speak English; so, Daniela is his contact with gringos (just another job she excels at).

Enrique and two of his men came to the apartment to look at the job, gave us a quote (cost, materials, time and end date). They started and completed the job on time.

Enrique took me to Sherwin Williams (our choice). We used his contractor discount and I paid. We are extremely pleased with the results! The paint job is outstanding, little to no paint splatter and I got to practice my Spanish.

Note: We had received an earlier quote from a different painter that we questioned, too low and not enough materials. That painter ultimately backed out of the job. Do your due diligence.

New construction, remodel, repair, additions, plumbing, electrical and painting. Give them a call.

Come and get to know La Guarida

How wonderful it is to come back. And have our Chef Robin, too. On our TripAdvisor Page, a customer wrote the other day (and we are so very thankful):

“The food is excellent and the service is great. My friends and I had T-bone steaks cooked to order and tilapia. In previous visits, I have tried almost everything on their menu and have never been disappointed. There are three or four well-separated dining areas, each with its own restroom, to ensure that customers can practice social distancing while dining. If you have not been to La Guarida, I highly recommend you try it. If you have been staying away because of the pandemic, I encourage you to return and support this gem of a restaurant. If you don’t want to dine out, they are still offering delivery service. Call or message for a reservation. They are also open for breakfast and dinner!”

In short, we are delighted. Remember that we open for breakfast Tuesday to Saturday from 9:30 AM to 2 PM and dinner only with reservations.

We hope you are able to join us.

El Salinerito virtual and physical shop; we deliver

We did it!

Opening an El Salinerito franchise store in Cuenca has been a dream for many years. Since 2019 the dream came true. We believe and support the “Salinerito” process that took 50 years to fight poverty through community production. Its delicious and high-quality products are the result of a fair trade concept, of a social and solidary economy, of much effort and work by a community that is an example at national and international level.

The physical and virtual “El Salinerito store” will be a space not only to buy the diversity of its products but also to meet and learn from its process. Along with the El Salinerito brand, there will be El Gañal products and others that come from the same ethical concept of entrepreneurship and socially fair and environmentally responsible businesses.

The best and most varied kinds of cheese, conserves, chocolate, and many other marvelous products.
